Masame 0.4 is about your own games:

  • every finished game is reviewed on its own, OGS games included, and its key moments become exercises;
  • your rank, read in your moves;
  • a daily ritual, Today.

It also brings free analysis on a held key, handicap against the AI, a byo-yomi clock for local games, SGF files that open by drag-and-drop or double-click, a postcard export, and much more of OGS.

Downloads

File System
Masame_0.4.0_aarch64.dmg macOS 13 or later, Apple Silicon.
Masame_0.4.0_x64.dmg macOS 13 or later, Intel. Preview.
Masame_0.4.0_x64-setup.exe Windows 10 or 11, x64. Preview: built and unit-tested by CI, still little tried on real hardware.
Masame_0.4.0_amd64.AppImage, Masame_0.4.0_amd64.deb, Masame-0.4.0-1.x86_64.rpm Linux x86_64 with glibc 2.35 or later (Ubuntu 22.04+, Debian 12, Fedora, Linux Mint 21+). Preview.

Checksums are in SHA256SUMS.txt. The other files (latest.json, .tar.gz, .sig) are for the in-app updater.

Coming from 0.3? Masame offers this update itself; click Install. Your settings, networks, OGS sign-in and joseki progress are kept.

First launch

  • macOS. Open the DMG, drag Masame to Applications, then open it. Both Mac builds are signed and notarized by Apple, so there is nothing else to do.
  • Windows. The installer is not signed yet. If SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway. The installer is per-user and needs no administrator rights.
  • Linux. The AppImage may need libfuse2. With NVIDIA's proprietary driver, a blank window is fixed by starting Masame with WEBKIT_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1. Stone sounds need GStreamer's "good" plugins.

What's new

  • Automatic review. Every game you finish (10 moves or more) is reviewed in the background, on your machine, while the engine is free: a game against the AI, an OGS game of yours (played in Masame, imported, or one that ends while Masame is open). Its key moments join your exercises without a click, and the line under the board says so. It steps aside whenever you play, analyse or train, and picks up where it stopped. Review the game then reuses its reading. Two-player games and other people's games keep the manual review, since Masame can't know which side was yours.
  • Exercises from your games. Open them with E or the target icon in the card; a dot shows when some are waiting.
    • Each key moment becomes a card: the position just before the mistake, your move marked ×, "find a better move". KataGo grades any other try.
    • After an answer: see the better move, see the punishment, next exercise. Spaced repetition (FSRS) brings each card back; at most 10 new ones a day.
    • Where you lose points: the points your moves lost in the opening, the middle game and the endgame, over your last 20 reviewed games.
  • Your rank, read in your moves. KataGo's human network tells which rank your moves resemble, per game and per phase: "you played like a 7k: opening 4k, endgame 12k". You see it in the review and in Exercises › Your rank, with a curve over time.
    • With automatic adjustment, Your level follows this rank (over your last 10 games) and the AI stays within two ranks of it. The result line shows the next game's AI level when it changes.
    • To be honest about the scale: the rank is on the scale of Masame's AI levels, which come from KataGo's human SL network. That scale reads kyu players stronger than OGS does: about two ranks stronger for single-digit kyu, about five for double-digit kyu. Calibrated on 113 public OGS players. It needs at least 30 of your moves in a game.
  • Today. A daily ritual of about ten minutes, with D or the calendar icon: your due exercises (up to 5), your due joseki (up to 5), then a 9×9 against the AI at your level, even. That game doesn't move the AI level. A streak counts the days in a row.
  • Free analysis. Hold A on any position: KataGo's candidate moves appear lettered on the board, and the card shows the points each one loses, as in the joseki trainer. A quick read first, then a deeper one; let go and it disappears. No win-rate graph. Off during an OGS game.
  • Handicap against the AI. From 2 to 9 stones, proposed in the Game sheet from the gap between Your level and the AI level, scaled to the board size. You take Black; komi is 0.5. Handicap games save and reopen as SGF.
  • A local clock. Byo-yomi for two players or against the AI: 5′ + 3×20″, 10′ + 3×30″ or 30′ + 5×30″. It runs only for the side to move, and stops while a trainer or Today is open. A human who runs out of time loses; the AI never does.
  • Open SGF files naturally. Drop a file on the window, or double-click a .sgf file: Masame now registers itself for .sgf files. A second launch on Windows hands the file to the window already open.
  • Postcard. Game › Postcard… saves the position as a PNG, as the camera shows it, on a linen mount signed with Masame's seal. Ready for Reddit or Discord.
  • More of OGS.
    • In a game: cancel it in the first moves, ask for an undo or accept your opponent's, pause and resume, free handicap placement, a rematch at the end. When OGS can't propose the dead stones, Masame asks OGS's own scorer.
    • The Game sheet's OGS part has three tabs. Play: blitz, rapid, live or correspondence automatch; challenge a player by username; your received and sent challenges. My games: your ongoing games (your move first), your finished games page by page, and your OGS rank over time. Watch: the best live games, or any game from an OGS link, even signed out.
    • In the background: when you're signed in, Masame connects to OGS at launch. A system notification tells you when it's your move in correspondence, when a challenge arrives, and when a game starts or ends. A dot on the Game button shows a pending challenge or a correspondence move.
  • The board.
    • With the card open, the board now sits at the window's centre on wide screens. This one was asked for on r/baduk.
    • In the seated view, you can now pan as well as turn and zoom: middle-drag, Shift+right-drag, or Shift+two-finger swipe. R still brings it back.
    • The line under the board is easier to read: larger, in ink, on a card of its own, on up to two lines.
    • A finished game reads as a score sheet: the winner's stone with the result (B+R, W+3.5…), who won and how, the AI's next level when it changes, and a Review the game button.
  • The bot can stop resigning. A new switch in the AI settings, Bot may resign, on by default.
  • Fixes. A record that changes the side to play mid-game (SGF PL) is now analysed for the right side.
  • Intel Macs. The Intel build is now made on an Apple Silicon machine, cross-compiled; it is signed, notarized and checked the same way. Nothing changes for you, and it is still a preview.

Known limits

  • The Windows build is still unsigned, so SmartScreen warns on first launch.
  • The Windows engine stays on KataGo 1.18.1: version 1.18.2 ships only CUDA builds for Windows.
  • The Windows, Linux and Intel Mac builds are still previews: built and tested by GitHub Actions, little tried on real hardware.
  • Opening a .sgf by double-click and dropping a file from the system were tested in development, not yet on installed builds.
  • The new OGS features (cancel, undo, pause, challenges, notifications) were tested against a simulated OGS server and OGS's real public data, not yet in a game against a real opponent. Tell us if something goes wrong.
  • Your rank reads kyu players stronger than OGS does (see above).
  • Mobile comes later.

Credits

  • The players of r/baduk, for the centred board, the pan in the seated view and the Bot may resign switch, and the players who asked to train on their own games every day.
  • OGS's scorer (ai.online-go.com), asked for the dead stones when OGS can't propose them.
  • The tauri-plugin-notification and tauri-plugin-single-instance crates, for system notifications and opening files in the running window.

Masame 0.3 is about learning:

  • a joseki trainer;
  • game records with variations, and autoplay;
  • a closer seated view that you can turn and zoom with the mouse.

It also runs on Intel Macs, goes full screen on Windows and Linux, and keeps the engine going through long games on slow machines.

Checksums are in SHA256SUMS.txt. The other files (latest.json, .tar.gz, .sig) are for the in-app updater.

Coming from 0.2? Masame offers this update itself; click Install. Your settings, networks and OGS sign-in are kept.

What's new

  • Joseki trainer. Open it with J or the book icon in the card. Your game waits underneath, and Esc brings you back to it.
    • Explore: the candidate moves are lettered on the board, A losing least. Each one shows the points it loses, how often players of your level play it (from 20k to 5d, and pros), and where it comes from: classic, pro (common among pros), AI, verified by KataGo or contested. The rank lens shows the move a 20k, a 5k, a 1d and a pro would pick, next to KataGo's.
    • Practise: spaced repetition (FSRS) on each position. Every line is turned and recoloured at random and starts mid-sequence. Your opponent deviates the way players of your level do, so you learn to punish moves that leave the book.
    • Programme: the corners worth learning first, ordered by how often you'll meet each joseki × the points it costs you there.
    • Play a game from here: start a game against the bot from any position in the trainer.
    • Where the data comes from: we generated it ourselves with KataGo. The strongest kata1 network judges every move at 800 visits, and the Human SL network tells which moves players of each level choose. Positions are evaluated in one fixed opening (a cross fuseki), so a move's value can differ a little in your own games.
  • Game records with variations.
    • Playing from an earlier move starts a variation instead of erasing the rest of the game. ↑ and ↓ switch variations, and Main line takes you back.
    • Undo asks before it deletes several moves.
    • SGF files keep all their variations, comments and other properties when you save them.
    • In the game review, you can try your own continuation from a key moment, and KataGo answers.
  • Autoplay. Space plays the game through, at 0.5, 1, 2 or 4 seconds per move. This one was asked for on r/baduk.
  • The board.
    • The seated view (Contemplation) is closer.
    • In the seated view, the mouse moves the camera: right-drag or a two-finger swipe turns it, the wheel or a pinch zooms. R, or a double-click off the board, brings it back.
    • A 4K kaya texture, and sharper rendering on 4K screens.
    • Urushi-lacquer grid lines with a slight relief, visible up close.
    • Light through a shoji window in the Washitsu room.
    • Stones slide a little and settle when they are placed.
    • A subtle vignette and patina in the seated view. The top-down Study view is unchanged.
  • Windows and Linux. F11 toggles full screen. The window's title bar follows the room's light, so there is no white frame at night any more.
  • Intel Macs. A new build, with KataGo on OpenCL and an automatic CPU fallback, signed and notarized like the Apple Silicon one. It is a preview: built and tested by GitHub Actions and under Rosetta, not yet on a real Intel Mac.
  • A steadier engine.
    • Long games and slow machines no longer stall KataGo. If a query does stall, the engine restarts, and on Windows, Linux and Intel Macs it falls back from the GPU to the CPU build.
    • Copy diagnostics in Settings → Engine copies what we need for a bug report.
    • The bot still resigns only when it is clearly lost, and never before move 80 on 19×19.
  • Counting. Seki is recognised: eyes inside a seki are no longer counted as territory.
  • OGS. Your sign-in is now kept in the system keychain (or in a file if there is no keychain).

Known limits

  • The Windows build is still unsigned, so SmartScreen warns on first launch.
  • The Windows engine stays on KataGo 1.18.1: version 1.18.2 ships only CUDA builds for Windows.
  • Mobile comes later.

Masame 0.3 est tournée vers l'apprentissage :

  • un entraîneur de joseki ;
  • des parties avec variantes, et la lecture automatique ;

Masame 0.2.1 is a small update for macOS: the app is now signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple. The "Apple could not verify that Masame is free of malware" warning is gone, and there is no Open Anyway step any more.

Nothing else changes. If you have 0.2.0, Masame offers this update itself; click Install.

Masame 0.2.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 13 Oct 00:56
91463e4

Masame 0.2 answers what you asked for after the first preview:

  • stones that look placed by hand;
  • a review that teaches you something;
  • a Linux build;
  • play on OGS.

It also brings a new interface, a floating card that leaves the board alone. And it is the last version you have to download by hand: from now on Masame updates itself.

Downloads

File System
Masame_0.2.0_aarch64.dmg macOS 13 or later, Apple Silicon only. Intel Macs are not supported yet.
Masame_0.2.0_x64-setup.exe Windows 10 or 11, x64. Preview: built and unit-tested by CI, still little tried on real hardware.

Checksums are in SHA256SUMS.txt. The other files (latest.json, .tar.gz, .sig) are for the in-app updater.

Coming from 0.1.0? Install 0.2.0 over it once. Your settings and networks are kept. After that, updates come from inside the app.

First launch: the builds are not signed yet

  • macOS. Open the DMG, drag Masame to Applications, then open it. If macOS blocks it, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
  • Windows.

What's new

  • Play on OGS. Choose OGS as the opponent and sign in through your browser; Masame never sees your password.

    • Play: find an opponent for a ranked game at 9×9, 13×13 or 19×19, in blitz, rapid or live pace, and play it on Masame's board with clocks.
    • Resume: pick up your ongoing OGS games.
    • Review: open your finished games and review them.
    • Rules: OGS doesn't allow engine help during a game. Light and Shadow, the counting suggestions and the review stay off until the game is over.
  • Game review: find the punishment. Masame picks up to three moments where a move cost the most points, and turns each one into a short lesson:

    • you look for the reply that punishes the mistake;
    • you see it;
    • then you see the better move.

    It works after a game against the AI, or at any time in a two-player or SGF game. It runs on your machine, in about a minute.

  • A floating card. A compact card in the corner replaces the side panel. It has player cards, a move timeline and an action bar, with Game and Settings sheets. In 3D, the scene now fills the window. The card is paper (Washi) by day and lacquer (Laque) in the evening and by lantern light.

  • Stones.

    • Lighter shadows that follow the light.
    • Visible clamshell striations on the white stones.
    • A more hand-placed look, in 3D and in 2D.
  • Clearer engine feedback.

    • On first launch, the KataGo tuning shows its progress instead of looking frozen.
    • A caption under the board gives the result, the passes and the errors.
    • A bot pass is now heard and written out.
  • Linux. An AppImage, a .deb and an .rpm. KataGo is built from source, with OpenCL and an automatic CPU fallback.

  • Updates in the app.

    • At most once a day, Masame checks for a new version. You can turn this off.
    • An update installs only when you click, and only after its signature is verified.
    • On Linux this works with the AppImage. The .deb and .rpm show a download link instead.

Masame 0.1.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 11 Oct 21:33

En français plus bas.

The first public preview of Masame: a Go board made with the care of a craftsman, wood and slate and shell in a light that follows the hour, and across it KataGo playing like a human of the rank you choose. It is young and still a little rough: play on it, and report what you find in the issues.

Downloads

File System
Masame_0.1.0_aarch64.dmg macOS 13 or later, Apple Silicon only. Intel Macs are not supported.
Masame_0.1.0_x64-setup.exe Windows 10 or 11, x64. Preview: built and unit-tested by CI, but not yet tried on real hardware. Reports are welcome in the issues.

Checksums for both files are in SHA256SUMS.txt.

First launch: the builds are not signed yet

Masame has no Apple Developer ID or Windows code-signing certificate yet, so your system will warn you the first time.

  • macOS. Open the DMG, drag Masame to Applications, then open it. If macOS blocks it, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to the message about Masame. (Since macOS 15, right-click → Open no longer offers this.)
  • Windows. If SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway. The installer is per-user and needs no administrator rights.

Networks

No neural network is bundled. On first use, the app downloads the KataGo networks you choose from katagotraining.org (about 40 to 260 MB each); each file is checked against its sha256 before it is used.

What's inside

  • The Living Atelier. A real-time 3D board with physically based wood and stones, light that follows the time of day, two views, and bowls for the spare and captured stones. 9×9, 13×13 and 19×19.
  • A human opponent. KataGo with its human SL network plays like a player from 20k to 9d, with optional automatic level adjustment.
  • Light and Shadow. The engine's territory estimate shown as light and shade on the wood.
  • Counting. The engine proposes the dead stones; you correct them with a click.
  • Rules and records. Captures, ko, pass, undo, move navigation, SGF open and save.
  • Two languages. French and English, following the system language.
  • A 2D light mode, used automatically when 3D is unavailable.

Licences

Masame is released under the MIT licence. Third-party licence texts ship inside the app; see THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
