Felling Trees

Felling Trees

You need an axe. Felling takes two steps, and where you stand decides where the tree falls.

1. The notch

Hit the trunk on the side you want it to fall. A wedge is cut into the log, facing you.

2. The back cut

Hit the trunk again from the opposite side. The tree leans, cracks and comes down toward the notch.

Keep out of the way: a falling tree hurts. See When a Tree Lands.

Big 2x2 trees

Dark oak and giant spruce or jungle trees have 2x2 trunks:

  1. Notch both front logs.
  2. Strike the front again to deepen the cut.
  3. Finish from behind.

Good to know

  • Your builds are safe. Logs you placed yourself are never felled, and they break normally. Trees grown from a sapling, with or without bone meal, are natural trees and can be felled.
  • What stays on the tree: torches and signs fall with it. Anything else attached to it (buttons, ladders, banners, heads and so on) breaks and drops its item when the tree is cut.
  • The ground under a tree can't be broken while the tree and its roots are there. Fell the tree, then dig the roots out with a shovel. See Stumps and Chopping Blocks.
  • Machines: a Create mechanical saw cuts standing trees the usual way, with no notch. See Other Mods.
