WorkNix 1.0 Release

WorkNix is a portable Unix workstation system inspired by SunOS, implemented entirely in Java. This release provides a complete Unix-like environment with both command-line and graphical interfaces.

System Requirements

  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 11 or higher
  • 256MB minimum memory
  • Any operating system that supports Java

Installation

  1. Download worknix-1.0.jar
  2. Run in terminal mode:
    java -jar worknix-1.0.jar
  3. Run in GUI mode:
    java -jar worknix-1.0.jar --gui

First Boot

On first run, WorkNix will:

  1. Show the OpenBoot prompt (can be interrupted with ESC)
  2. Run system setup wizard
  3. Configure root password
  4. Create initial user account
  5. Set system hostname and timezone

Default Credentials

  • Root account: root/root
  • Change passwords after first login

Key Commands

Terminal Mode

  • help - Show available commands
  • sudo - Execute command as superuser
  • pkg - Package management
  • vi - Text editor
  • useradd/userdel - User management

Desktop Mode

  • Alt+T - Open terminal
  • Alt+F - Open file manager
  • Right-click desktop for context menu
  • Launch menu for all applications

Package Management

Pre-configured packages:

  • coreutils - Basic file and shell utilities
  • bash - Bourne Again Shell
  • vim - Vi IMproved editor
  • grep - Pattern matching utility
  • less - Text file viewer

File System Structure

Standard Unix directory layout:
