HushMessenger v0.14.0 is for Messenger 580.0.0.49.91 and works on all 21 arm64 builds. It has 32 patches, and 29 of them are switches you turn on in settings.
This is the first release since v0.8.0, so it rolls up a few days of work. The big additions are Native Bubbles and an optional slide when you open a chat.
New
- Slide chats in and out (#28) slides a chat in from the side when you open it from your chat list or search, and back out when you go back. The screen underneath holds still, and right-to-left languages slide from the left. It starts off. Pause or Android's Remove animations setting keeps Messenger's own transitions.
- Allow chat bubbles now offers Stock, Chat Heads and Native Bubbles (#19). Native Bubbles uses Android's own bubbles on Android 11 and newer, so a chat can open as a floating bubble. Your account still has to qualify, and Android has to allow Messenger's bubbles. A link to Android's bubble settings sits right below the mode buttons.
Fixes and changes
- Settings open from Messenger's side menu now, as well as from its Menu tab (#26).
- Use system emoji draws your phone's own emoji on Android 12 and newer (#25). It used to load Google's emoji every time, so Samsung phones and emoji modules lost their own set.
- On a Root Mount install, Android never reads the patched long-press shortcuts, so Patch controls and Restart Messenger were missing from Messenger's icon. HushMessenger adds them itself now when Messenger starts (#27).
- The directions to settings now say Long-press Messenger's home screen icon > Patch controls. "Long-press Messenger" was easy to read as the title inside the app (#27).
- Saving and restoring choices with a file only works with documents you pick, never Messenger's own private files, and it shows progress while it works. A restore that takes a while won't undo switches you changed in the meantime.
- Original-quality photos strips the small preview thumbnail some cameras tuck into the photo header. The main image, its color profile and density info stay as they were.
- Settings and the install guide explain that uninstalling the settings icon removes Messenger too. Use Hide app drawer icon to hide just the icon.
Updating
- Use Morphe Manager 1.33.0 or newer and refresh the HushMessenger source. It should show v0.14.0 with 32 patches. On a computer, Morphe Desktop needs 1.17.0 or newer.
- Patch an unmodified arm64 Messenger 580.0.0.49.91. Any of the 21 version codes listed under Supported Messenger builds in the README works, for example 346013440 or 346013387. The 32-bit builds aren't supported.
- Sign with the same key you used last time and install over your current copy. A different key means uninstalling Messenger and losing its local data.
- Open HushMessenger settings and tap Restart Messenger.
The .mpp file is a patch bundle for Morphe. It isn't an APK you can install.
Known limitations
- Opening a chat from a notification with Slide chats in and out turned on hasn't been tried on a phone yet, and neither has Android 13 or older.
- Native Bubbles hasn't been tried on a custom ROM or a low-memory phone.
- The Root Mount shortcut fix was checked on a rooted test emulator, not a rooted phone.
- Hide read receipts can leave your own copy of a chat marked unread (#20).
- Nobody has checked a fresh sign-in or recovering encrypted chat history on a phone yet, and live ad removal is still unconfirmed.
Validation
- 147 Kotlin tests, 458 Android unit tests and 47 Python checks pass. Android lint reports no errors.
- Morphe Desktop 1.18.0 applied all 32 patches, Material You included, to every one of the 21 supported builds with a 1024 MB Java heap.
- One build from each of the five groups that share internal names (346013440, 346013372, 346013423, 346013357 and 346013374) was also patched and signed, and apksigner verified every v3 signature.
- On an Android 16 test phone, chats slid in from the chat list and from search in both themes, and turning the switch off brought back Messenger's own transitions.
- Two clean builds of the bundle, one of them from a fresh checkout of the release commit, came out byte for byte the same.
- OSV-Scanner found no known advisories in anything the bundle ships. Its only hits are old Commons Lang and Apache HTTP libraries inside Android's lint tool, which isn't part of the bundle.
