OpenCrossing-Anbernic v0.5.0

New

  • A missing, unreadable, or wrong-region disc image now shows a clear full-screen error at launch telling you what's wrong and where the file goes — no more silent black screen. (USA GAFE01 is required and now enforced.)
  • Saves are now validated before loading, the same way the original GameCube did. A corrupted or hand-edited save is rejected safely — the game falls back to its automatic backups instead of crashing and taking your town with it. A bad save in Card B cancels the train ride instead of corrupting your home town.

Bug Fixes

  • Mr. Resetti now actually appears when you quit without saving. A port bug meant he could never trigger — proper shutdowns are still respected, but resets get you the lecture you deserve.
  • Fixed save-backup rotation so game-start writes no longer churn the .bak history your save recovery depends on.

Notes

  • The NES furniture items don't work on this port and now say so clearly (the emulator inside the original game is GameCube-specific code that can't run on these devices). See the README FAQ.
  • Campsite visitors (tent/igloo) can never move in — that's how the original game works, not a bug. Move-ins happen on their own schedule.
  • Save editors: use one that recomputes the Animal Crossing checksum (most do). Raw hex edits are now rejected at load instead of crashing.
  • Device reports this cycle: RG40XX H confirmed working. Thank you, and keep the reports coming (attach ports/ac-gc/log.txt).
  • Upgrading? Overwrite files and it should be fine. Recommend backing up saves before.
  • Expect bugs. Still early!

Getting Started

  1. Download and unzip opencrossing-anbernic-v0.5.0-armhf.zip
  2. Copy the ports folder to the root of your SD card, and Animal Crossing.sh into ROMS/Ports/
  3. Place your disc image in ports/ac-gc/rom/
  4. Launch Animal Crossing from the Ports menu

v0.4.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 15 Jul 23:33

OpenCrossing-Anbernic v0.4.0

New

  • Resolution is now auto-detected from your device's panel — no more editing the launcher script on 640×480 devices. You can still force a resolution in settings.ini.
  • D-pad walking enables itself on devices without an analog stick (RG35XX SP and friends). The "Use Dpad as Joystick" setting is now Off/On/Auto and defaults to Auto — an explicit Off/On is always respected.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed the in-game clock freezing during play (time was right at boot, then barely advanced — it snapped back to boot time every ~7.6 minutes). Days, shop hours, and events now track real time. Thanks to the RG28XX reporter!
  • Fixed the item duplication when saving while holding a tool. On load, a held tool now moves into a free pocket slot (or stays in your hands if pockets are full — items are never destroyed).

Notes

  • Upgrading? Overwrite files and it should be fine. Recommend backing up saves before.
  • Device reports this cycle: RG35XX H on modded stock OS, RG40XX V and RG35XX on Knulli — all confirmed working. Thank you, and keep the reports coming (attach ports/ac-gc/log.txt).
  • Expect bugs. Still early!

Getting Started

  1. Download and unzip opencrossing-anbernic-v0.4.0-armhf.zip
  2. Copy the ports folder to the root of your SD card, and Animal Crossing.sh into ROMS/Ports/
  3. Place your disc image in ports/ac-gc/rom/
  4. Launch Animal Crossing from the Ports menu

v0.3.0 — big fps jump: batch culling + strip conversion

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 13 Jul 23:36

Highlights

Measured on an RG-34XX SP: ~56 fps average (median ~60, 78% of samples ≥55) at ~100% game speed — up from ~52 avg with dips to 30 in v0.2.0. Worst dips are now low-40s during the heaviest acre streaming.

  • Whole-batch CPU frustum culling — 60-80% of the geometry batches the game submits are fully offscreen and are now skipped before they ever reach the GPU driver. This is the big one.
  • Triangle strip/fan conversion at vertex accumulation — uniform primitive stream, cullable and mergeable geometry.
  • New performance diagnostics in verbose logs (per-primitive draw counts, cull/merge counters, batch-break attribution).

Project rename

The project is now OpenCrossing-Anbernic (was animal-crossing-anbernic). Old GitHub links redirect automatically. Install paths on your SD card are unchanged — existing installs keep working and saves are untouched.

Compatibility

  • Developed and tested on RG-34XX SP (muOS + PortMaster).
  • Community-confirmed on RG28XX running Knulli. Other Allwinner H700 Anbernics (RG35XX family, RG40XX, CubeXX) should work — reports welcome.

Install

See the README install guide. You supply your own disc image (GAFE01, USA); the zip contains no game data.

If something renders wrong, these launcher env vars isolate the new features: PC_NO_BATCH_CULL=1, PC_NO_STRIP_CONVERT=1. Attach ports/ac-gc/log.txt to bug reports.
