SMZ3 Cas’ Randomizer v9.9.10
This is a casual version of the original SMZ3 randomizer.
Changes in 9.9.1
Cas-ify Your Archipelago Experience (Now out of Beta as of April 6, 2025)
Wanting to play SMZ3 in a multiworld with your friends in Archipelago or simply want to have a multi game randomizer experience, but you don't want to play without the patches provided by SMZ3 Cas'? We've got you covered! When on the Singleplayer tab, you can click on the dropdown next to Generate custom game to select Import Archipelago rom.
SMZ3 Cas' will then parse the rom file to determine all of the item locations for tracking purposes, then it'll open a window that will allow you to apply various patches and customizations. You can apply any sprites from the Cas' randomizer as well as enable hint tiles, re-spin, the modern SM control patches, screen flashing updates, and any of the other patches available in SMZ3 Cas'.
You can even use tracker while you play. Worried about the possibility of IBJ? No need to worry with the cheat to charge a shine spark. Want to ask tracker about what's in a dungeon? No problem! Want to be serenaded by tracker in song? Well, that's just a given.
Some things to note:
- While you can you use the map tracker with logic settings that should match the SMZ3 version that Archipelago uses, the functionality won't be as fully featured as using it with a SMZ3 Cas' seed.
- Some hints and spoilers will be rather limited because Tracker will only have context to the imported SMZ3 game and not the other games in the multiworld.
- In order to avoid conflicting with Archipelago, you can't use cheats to give yourself items. You can use other cheats, such as refilling your health and ammo, however.
- Currently you can't use SMZ3 Cas' to apply MSUs to Archipelago roms. Once the SMZ3 version that Archipelago uses is updated to the new version that includes MSU support, this functionality will be added.
- If you're using Archipelago for a singleplayer multi game randomizer, SMZ3 Cas' should disconnect if you switch to either ALttPR or VARIA games generated by AP, that may not be the case for other SNES games. To prevent tracker from incorrectly detecting items or cleared locations/bosses, it is recommended to disable auto tracking before switching to other games.
- This should mostly work with normal mainline SMZ3 roms as well as SMZ3 Cas' roms, but the functionality is not fully supported.
Initial Setup Wizard
For new users of SMZ3, you'll now be greeted with a wizard that will help guide you through some of the first setup, such as selecting roms, setting up auto tracking, and what tracker profiles you want to use.
Sprite Window Updates
The sprite window has had several updates to it. The sprite buttons are now updated so that you can click anywhere in the area to select the sprite rather than just the image or a small button. The favorite and hide buttons have also been turned into icons to accommodate this change. In addition, there is now a button to import custom sprites if you want to import your own from the other locations. Note that Link and Samus sprites need to be in the RDC format and that ship sprites need to be in the IPS format.
Soft Lock Prevention & Upper Red Brin to Upper Maridia Patches
Most of the soft lock prevention patches from the Super Metroid VARIA randomizer have been added as a new option under Cas' patches. Currently these are a single option, but in the future they will likely be split into separate options. On top of those patches, there is a custom patch which adds power bomb blocks to the secret passage between upper Red Brinstar to the upper left part of Maridia to allow the passage to now be two-directional. Note that none of these changes impact the logic, so even if items are technically accessible earlier due to these patches, the seed won't be generated with that in mind, nor will tracker show them in logic.
Logic Update & Cas Setting
There has been an update to the logic that prevented Lower Norfair East escape items from being in logic in keysanity modes in situations where you could actually retrieve them and leave without taking damage.
Also, a new Cas' Logic has been added to prevent low resource runs in the Dark World. Enabling this option will logically expect you to have at least 6 total hearts (the 3 original hearts + 3 additional hearts) and some sort of re-usable weapon (sword, hammer, bow, or fire rod) to navigate the Dark World.
Cheats in UI
You can now enable cheats and give yourself items in the UI by clicking on the Commands menu, then right clicking on an item. This feature will be added in the future to add additional cheats.
-
Miscellaneous Updates
- When spoilers are enabled, Tracker will now announce the locations of items if all locations have been cleared.
- When spoiling items in dungeons, progression items are now prioritized first.
- For people who use the separate MSU Randomizer application, SMZ3 and the MSU Randomizer application should now communicate between each other so that tracker can comment on various MSU changes.
- Plando files can now specify the fairy bottle trade items.
- A schema file has been created for plando files. If you use Visual Studio Code with the YAML extension by Red Hat, you'll get full syntax highlighting that makes use of this plando file.
- There are now multiple options for the displayed map changing when using auto tracking. You can now have it change by region, by map, or a combination of the two.
- Tracker vtuber sprites have been separated from the Tracker config profiles. These should be updated automatically to clean up the old config profiles that were used for Tracker sprites.
- If you try to mark an item at a location that has already been cleared, Tracker will sass you since this was likely her mishearing something.
- Tracking items and bosses when having auto tracking enabled will now lead to Tracker sass since these are likely her mishearing things. If you genuinely need to have her track something, you'll be prompted with the full phrase to say.
- Added a warning popup if attempting to launch a rom when there is no default application is specified for sfc files.
- If the auto tracker gets stuck in a disconnect/reconnect loop, it'll eventually stop trying to reconnect after 10 failed attempts. Tracker will also only talk about a connection or disconnection once it's been verified.
- Various new Super Metroid sprites have been added.
- Updated the verbiage of the option for the time limit for tracker to respond to chat greetings to be more clear.
- Thanks to Liminality Carb, some tracker lines will actually have her emote differently now!
- A new song has been added for you to dance and jump to.
-
Bug Fixes
- Fixed an issue that would prevent configs and sprites from not being recognized by SMZ3 if they were just downloaded.
- Fixed an issue where muting tracker and then saying undo would cause her to not speak for a while.
- Fixed an issue where asking tracker if a crystal dungeon was required could cause incorrectly labeling the dungeon as having nothing in it in certain circumstances.
- Fixed an issue where the left side of swamp hint tile could cause a tracker error if both locations had dungeon-specific items.
- Fixed an issue where progression being locked by bottles, powder, and the mushroom could cause tracker hints to be incorrect.
- Fixed an issue where the bomb merchant wasn't properly marking off red crystal dungeons.
- Fixed an issue where refreshing the tracker profiles would cause a crash.
Changes in 9.9.2
-
Miscellaneous Bugs & Updates
- Fixed an issue where when you have hard wall jumps enabled bomb torizo would show up in logic without the morph ball.
- Fixed an issue where certain items would not show up as useful in hint tiles.
- Fixed an issue where the MM/TR boss would show up in logic despite not having marked the required medallion for the dungeon.
- Fixed an issue where the MM/TR accessibility wouldn't update when the required medallion was marked.
- Fixed an issue where the map tracker would not update to show dark world being in logic after getting your 6th heart.
- Fixed an issue where tracker would comment about locations being out of logic when you were only missing the logically required keys.
Changes in 9.9.3
-
Keyless Tourian
- A new logic setting has been added to toggle if Tourian requires the Crateria boss keycard or not.
- This also fixes an issue where in imported Archipelago seeds with the "Fast Ganon" setting enabled, tracker would properly track and display the Metroid keys.
Changes in 9.9.4
- Fixed an issue where reloading a tracker state where all locations were previously cleared wouldn't work. This would primarily come up in async multiworld games.
Changes in 9.9.5
Archipelago Support Out of Beta
After various different updates and bug fixes, Archipelago support is now at a point where I'm comfortable not labeling it as a beta feature. The following has been added/implemented:
- Fixed an issue with importing AP seeds with large numbers of players.
- Support has been added for random reward requirements for completing the game. There are now indicators for when Ganon and Mother Brain can be accessed that will show up if you meet the requirements of accessing them. There are voice commands for updating the crystal/boss requirements, and if you read the signs or approach the golden statue room it will auto track the required amounts. Currently these numbers aren't displayed, however. The reward counts have been also removed from the summary in the generation window.
- Fixed an issue where the stand up glitch tracking was activating for AP seeds even though they don't have the required assembly for it.
- Fixed an issue where Misery Mire and Turtle Rock required medallions could be spoiled by the map even though you haven't seen the requirement yet.
- Fixed an issue where other players keys were not being counted in the number of treasures in each dungeon.
- Fixed an issue where sometimes other game items weren't being properly referred to as "potentially progression/useful" or "junk".
Linux Text to Speech and Speech Recognition (Beta)
Using the custom developed PySpeechService application, Linux users can now utilize text to speech and speech recognition. Note that unfortunately the default voice is very different from Tracker's voice on Linux, but you can set the voice to be different by downloading different files. Before utilizing this functionality, be sure to go through the setup process outlined on the PySpeechService GitHub to install any prerequisites and get the application installed. When setup properly, SMZ3 will automatically detect it and run it in the background while you play SMZ3 and close it when you end the program.
To change the text speech, download the onnx and json files for the Piper voice models you wish to use, then simply create the folder ~/.local/share/SMZ3CasRandomizer/PiperModels and add the following files:
- Tracker_Female.json
- Tracker_Female.onnx
- Tracker_Male.json
- Tracker_Male.onnx
A big thanks to PinkKittyRose for helping test this functionality.
Tracker Sprite Pack and Dialog Updates
-
Thanks to the amazing work of DrDubz, there are now two entirely new tracker profiles. You can switch profiles in the settings window by clicking on the cogwheel icon on the main window and looking under "Tracker Options".
- A male tracker dubbed "Mr Smooth" by PinkKittyRose's community

- Captain Novolin from the "hit" SNES game which was made for an April Fool's day joke for the_betus

- There is also a "Linux" tracker, which is just the normal tracker with a "Tux" hair pin.
- A male tracker dubbed "Mr Smooth" by PinkKittyRose's community
-
You can now have your own custom tracker sprite by creating a
TrackerSprites/<SpriteName>folder in%localappdata%\SMZ3CasRandomizeron Windows or~/.local/share/SMZ3CasRandomizeron Linux. -
The ability to add additional lines with different poses to responses from tracker has been implemented. To go along with this, "flipped", "blank", and "alt" poses have been added to all built in image packs to make sort of conversational responses. Some lines with different voices have been updated to use these.
-
Tracker sprite packs can now have configs which can be used to add custom responses.
Miscellaneous Bugs & Updates
- Fixed an issue where defeating Agahnim was not being tracked properly.
- Fixed an issue where stopping and restarting tracker would sometimes cause auto tracking events to be fired off repeatedly, causing unexpected behavior.
- Fixed an issue where clearing multiple locations in a dungeon would repeatedly state that there are no items left.
- The generation window is now resizable and will try to shrink if it's opened in a smaller resolution or when the display scaling is really high.
- Peg world mode was updated to automatically disappear if you leave the screen (note: this is currently broken if you manually enable peg world before going to the screen with hammer pegs), and the detection for when you're leaving the shaktool area was updated to work with resets.
- Fixed an issue where sometimes all Metroid items/bosses would be tracked if you paused RetroArch before the game fully loaded and set up auto tracking.
- You can now set the volume of tracker and test the volume in the options menu.
Changes in 9.9.6
Folder Restructure
This should not change any functionality, but this is a heads up for people who have added custom tracker messages and sprites. To both fix an issue for users who installed SMZ3 to the Program Files folder not getting sprite updates and to standardize the folder locations, there has been a restructuring of the folders that house SMZ3's data. Unlike before where data was divided between the install location and the app data folder, there is now a %localappdata%/SMZ3CasRandomizer/DefaultData folder that houses the built-in data that gets automatically updated, and a separate %localappdata%/SMZ3CasRandomizer/CustomData for all user configs, sprites, and other data. Your previously created configs and sprites should be automatically transferred over, but any new ones you make should go into these folders.
Patch to Speed Up the Metroid Pause Menu
A new patch has been added that can slightly speed up opening and navigating the Metroid pause menu.
Archipelago SMZ3 MSU Support
Imported Archipelago SMZ3 roms will now be patched to include MSU support, and you can now select MSUs for AP roms.
Miscellaneous Bugs & Updates
- The locations window now has a scrollbar from top to bottom to avoid situations where too many pinned locations and hint tiles could cause the locations area to be hard to view.
- When asking tracker for a hint as to where an item is, the "you won't find it in X region" will now refer to the area with the largest number of locations where it's not found to be a more useful hint.
- Hints that refer to the region an item is in are now re-worded. The hints are a bit more broad, but should be less prone to misunderstandings due to the way the regions are laid out (for example King's Tomb will have a hint like "it's in the light world, but not in a dungeon" instead of "check around the villages").
- Hint tiles when playing keysanity seeds now have a separate set of text for areas that have keys/keycards but no other mandatory items so that you can decide if you want to go there or not depending on the circumstances.
- Temporary disconnects from Twitch chat will no longer be announced if they are less than 15 seconds.
- When using the "Default" tracker profile, the small random change of getting the "Mr. Smooth" voice and sprite has been added back.
- The initial setup window will now save upon each press of the next button instead of at the end so that if you close out of the window halfway through the setup, what you have previously entered will still be saved.
Changes in 9.9.7
Randomized Etecoon Songs
The Etecoon dance song can now be randomized with multiple different jingles
Miscellaneous Bugs & Updates
- Fixed an issue with custom tracker profile configs not loading properly.
- Fixed an issue where peg world was automatically turned off if enabled manually on a different screen.
Changes in 9.9.8
Miscellaneous Bugs & Updates
- Additional Etecoon songs have been added by Phiggle
- Fixed an issue where certain voice recognition lines would cause an error
- Fixed an issue where custom tracker UI sprites (like content icons) were not displaying properly
- Fixed an issue where tracker would state the number of treasures left during the GT guessing game
- Fixes an issue with AP seeds where someone uses !getitem with a bogus item name
- Fixes an issue with AP seeds where zelda keys for other players weren't getting counted as dungeon treasure
- Fixes an issue with AP seeds where dungeon treasure counts weren't always being announced
- Update the AP MSU patch to work with the current AP SMZ3 version and the next one where they remove the Star Fox credits
Changes in 9.9.9
Miscellaneous Bugs & Updates
- Tracker will no longer sometimes compliment you on the tech when you run through Mockball Hall with the Speed Booster.
- Some Etecoon songs loop the sample, giving higher notes more sustain.
Changes in 9.9.10
Self Downloading Updates and Better Linux Support
For Windows users, going forward after this version, when there is a new update, SMZ3 will offer to download and start the installer for you. You'll still have to advance through the installer, but it should make the process a lot easier.
For Linux users, SMZ3 Cas' is now provided via AppImage. This means no installation of .NET is required anymore. On top of this, the Linux version will also offer to download the latest AppImage and run it when there is a new update.
Better ALttPO Support
Updates have been made to the EmoTracker connector that should work better with the ALttPO ConnectorLib connector. To use this, make sure you're using the Lua EmoTracker / ALttPO connector in SMZ3 Cas'. As a note, the current recommended way of connecting would be via SNI/Qusb2snes connector in SMZ3 Cas' with the Usb2snes connector in ALttPO.
Furthermore, a new tracking mode option has been added to work with ALttPO. In the settings under Tracker Options there is a new option "Auto tracking mode". The default is "location-based" which allows tracker to know exactly what item you picked up where and comment on it for more sass. However, a new option "inventory-based" was added which looks at your current inventory in both games to update the tracked items. This means if another player picks up an item in the other game, tracker will detect the item has been added to your inventory.
All of this support is still experimental and not fully supported, but it worked from around 30 minutes of testing.
Miscellaneous Bugs & Updates
- SMZ3 Cas' now runs on .NET 10. For Windows users, you will be prompted to install when running the setup. For Mac users, you will need to install .NET 10.
- When a seed is generated, if the GT big key, 4 SM bosses, or Crateria boss keycard (for SM keysanity) are not accessible, an error will now be displayed on generation.
- For Zelda keysanity, there is now an option to force the GT big key to be in Ganon's Tower to allow for the GT big key guessing game.
- Fixed an issue with the location list not working properly for keysanity.
- Fixed an issue where the popup would not be displayed properly when your Twitch token has expired.
- Fixed an issue where clearing dungeons when not auto tracking would cause tracker to comment on there being out of logic locations simply due to not having all keys.
- Fixed an issue where the Metroid doors would show up in the Super Metroid pause menu map when just Zelda keysanity was enabled.
