Automation System

ToneForge features a complete automation system, allowing you to record and playback parameter changes over time for dynamic and expressive performances.

How It Works

The automation system records all parameter changes (via UI or MIDI) during recording and replays them automatically, creating smooth and precise effect movements.

Automation Flow

1. Preparation

• Go to the Effects tab
• Set initial effect parameters
• Choose or create a preset

2. Recording

• Enter a name for your automation
• Tap Record to start
• Move effect controls in real time (sliders, switches, MIDI)
• All changes are timestamped
• Tap Stop to finish

3. Playback

• Tap Play to activate automation
• Parameter values are applied automatically
• UI controls move in real time
• Tap Stop Playback to interrupt

4. Persistence

• Automations are saved with presets
• Each preset can have multiple automations
• Automations persist between sessions

Technical Details

• Data structure: Timestamp, parameter, value
• Multiple parameters: All effect controls supported
• Smooth interpolation: Fluid transitions between values
• High precision: ~60 FPS updates during playback

Integration

• UI: Visual controls for recording/playback
• MIDI: Automation via external MIDI controls
• Presets: Automations saved with effect chains
• Real-time: Instant application during playback

Supported Controls

• SeekBars: All numeric parameters (depth, rate, mix, etc.)
• Switches: Effect on/off
• Spinners: Type selectors (distortion, reverb, etc.)
• MIDI: Any mapped control
