Moto Buds Desktop Utility v2.1.0

We are thrilled to announce Version 2.1.0, bringing highly anticipated cross-platform support and major quality-of-life improvements to the Moto Buds Desktop Utility.

What's New

Fully Functioning Windows Support

For the first time, MotoBudsDesktopUtility is officially available natively on Windows! We have compiled two standalone versions:

  • Setup Executable (.exe): A full installation wizard that seamlessly adds the app to your Start Menu and creates desktop shortcuts.
  • Portable Executable (.exe): A completely standalone version that runs instantly without any installation required.

All core features, including the 10-Band Custom Equalizer, Gesture Configuration, and Find My Device, are 100% fully functioning on Windows. Note: Hi-Res Audio (LDAC) codec switching relies heavily on the Linux PipeWire stack and is currently the only feature safely disabled on the Windows client.

Persistent System Tray Integration

You no longer need to keep the main application window open. The app now features a seamless System Tray integration (available on both Linux and Windows):

  • Battery Tooltips: Simply hover over the tray icon to instantly view the battery levels of your left earbud, right earbud, and charging case.
  • Quick Controls Context Menu: Right-click the tray icon to instantly switch between Noise Cancellation, Transparency, and Off modes without opening the app.
  • Background Operation: Closing the main window will now gracefully minimize the application to the tray so it remains connected to your earbuds in the background.

OS Compatibility

  • Linux: Fully compatible with Debian-based systems (.deb) and all other modern Linux distributions (.AppImage). Requires python3 and bluez.
  • Windows: Fully compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11. Runs natively using standard AF_BTH Winsock sockets.

⚠️ Important Usage Instructions

Bluetooth Pre-Connection

CRITICAL: Please ensure your Moto Buds are natively paired and connected to your operating system via your standard Bluetooth manager (Windows Settings or Linux Bluetooth panel) before opening the app and pressing the "Connect" button. If you connect them after reaching the connection screen, you may experience connectivity handshaking issues.

Common Troubleshooting

If the app fails to connect to the earbuds or the UI gets stuck on the loading spinner, please follow these steps to reset the RFCOMM socket state:

  1. Completely Quit the application (ensure it is closed from the System Tray as well).
  2. Open your OS Bluetooth settings and toggle your PC's Bluetooth adapter Off, then turn it back On.
  3. Wait for the Moto Buds to automatically reconnect to your PC.
  4. Relaunch the application and click Connect.

Moto Buds Desktop Utility V2.0.0

Build Environment

  • Platform: Linux (amd64)
  • Version: 2.0.0
  • Node: v20+
  • Electron: v30+
  • Electron Builder Config: AppImage, deb

Changes in this Release

  • App Icon: Replaced generic React icon with a premium custom Moto Buds earbud design across all menus, app launch interfaces, and OS taskbars.
  • Dual-Pane Design: Overhauled the primary user interface to split diagnostic information (battery/connection) from functional toggles (ANC, Sound Menu, Gestures, Find My Device).
  • In-Ear Detection: Optimized UI reactivity. The interface now updates instantaneously utilizing optimistic state mutations, bypassing Bluetooth async bottlenecks.
  • Find My Device: Introduced ringing capabilities with in-ear safety checks to prevent hearing damage.
  • Fit Test: Fully functional independent seal tests for Left/Right buds, interpreting dual byte payloads.
  • Custom Gestures Configurator: Built out complete independent Double Tap, Triple Tap, and Hold configurations mapping directly to Linux MPRIS proxy actions (Play/Pause, Forward, Voice Assistant, Noise Control).
  • Attribution Footer: Added author repository links and profile credits inside the "More" tab.
  • Dependencies Update: AppImage and deb archives now natively declare python3 and bluez inside package rules to ensure native mpris-proxy bridging exists upon installation.

⚠️ Important Connection Instructions

  1. Connect to OS First: Please ensure your earbuds are natively connected to your OS via your Bluetooth manager BEFORE pressing the "Connect" button inside the app.
  2. Troubleshooting: If you connect your earbuds after launching the app and experience slight connectivity issues, simply disconnect and reconnect the earbuds from your OS Bluetooth manager.
  3. Troubleshooting: After Launching the app if the gestures dont work just cycle the application close it and open it again. This is also a common troubleshooting step with most issues.

🐧 OS Compatibility

Currently, this application relies on the Linux BlueZ Bluetooth stack. It is 100% compatible with Linux.
Note: We are actively investigating a Windows port, but it requires a significantly different backend architecture and will take some time.

📦 Download Instructions

  • Ubuntu / Debian / Linux Mint: Download MotoBudsDesktopUtility-v2.0.0-linux-amd64.deb and install it via your package manager or sudo dpkg -i.
  • Other Linux Distros: Download the MotoBudsDesktopUtility-v2.0.0-linux-x86_64.AppImage, make it executable (chmod +x), and run it directly.
