Roadmap

Status of what is built, what is next and what comes later. The roadmap is a proposal from specs/01-foundation-specification.md (section 14) and may change. Everything stays client-only: nothing on the server is ever required or modified.

Status Meaning
Built Available in current builds
In progress Specified, currently being built
Later Planned for a later epic, not yet specified in detail

Built: Epic 1, stage 1a (everyday client)

Released as v0.1.0 (alpha). The complete everyday client: connection and certificate trust, channels and chat, follow channels, voice with push-to-talk and noise suppression, avatars, tray, message notifications, themes and three languages. v0.1.1 adds the music quality switch. Both are on the Releases page. See Features for the full list.

Built: Epic 1, stage 1b (chat features)

Released as v0.2.0 (AGPL-3.0; earlier versions were MIT). Richer chat, with external content handled privately. Link previews and external images share one privacy switch (on by default; switchable in the first-start wizard and in settings; no previews for private or LAN addresses). See Features.

  • Code highlighting and a formatting toolbar with shortcuts; link previews; YouTube, Twitch and Spotify cards (players load only after a click); external images inline, with an image viewer with zoom.
  • GIF links with a favorites list, labeled "via GIPHY" or "via Tenor". There is no GIF search in this stage; search is Epic 6.
  • Dismiss (x) on cards with cache clean-up after a set number of days and optional automatic chat history deletion.
  • @mentions with autocomplete, ping sound and switches; manual voice activation threshold; "Now playing" status (Linux and Windows, not macOS).
  • Inline play limits differ per platform (some players only play after opening them).

Built: Epic 1, stages 1c and 1d (in-game, Mumcord to Mumcord and people)

Released together as v0.3.0. Hotfix v0.3.1 followed: Music quality packets now fit Mumble's size limit (#7), and chat links open again on Linux (#9).

Stage 1c (in-game)

  • In-game overlay on Linux (Vulkan layer in the style of MangoHud, OpenGL fallback; Steam and Proton supported). Per game, global Off/On switch, optional auto start, first-start wizard choice, anti-cheat blocklist off by default.
  • Window overlay: a transparent, click-through, always-on-top window showing who is talking, with corner placement, move mode, size and opacity.
  • "Now gaming" status with Steam picture and play time, and "Join game" for Steam games that support +connect.
  • Quick settings with a collapsible Beta group, settings search with a sticky sidebar, and accessibility switches.
  • Positional audio (Beta, off by default) via Mumble Link and the official game plugins (Beta); a "3D" icon shows who currently sends positions.

Stage 1d (Mumcord to Mumcord and people)

  • Person menu with icons and "Join channel"; full profile with a private note; friends by certificate hash, shown in the right-hand column with online state and location.
  • Member column with collapsible "In " and "In other channels" sections and a "Server overview" label.
  • Chat history sync between Mumcord clients (7 days / 500 messages, channel messages only, marked "from X's history", on by default and switchable).
  • Full-size images on demand (Beta), with separate switches for sending and receiving.
  • 24 official EU languages and a privacy step in the first-start wizard.
  • Mumcord badge, several images per message, double-click for a private chat.

Beta: positional audio, game plugins and full-size images. Coming later: the Windows in-game overlay (see Epic 2). There is no overlay of any kind on macOS.

All of this works with unmodified servers; nothing is installed on the server.

Later: Epics 2 to 6

Epic Title Scope
2 Multi-server read-along + shareable themes Connect to several servers at once and read along on all of them; custom themes with colour settings and presets, shareable as a config string that shows a theme preview card in the chat with one-click import; carried over from Epic 1 (not in v0.3.0): Windows in-game overlay (graphics hook), in-game overlay colours on HDR10 screens, overlay on top of borderless-fullscreen games, in-game overlay with Flatpak Steam, a "Now gaming" join target from the Mumble Link game context, cancelling a running full-size image transfer, "Join channel" for friends on another connected server, and checking the game plugins with real games so positional audio, plugins and full-size images can leave Beta. Also planned: connection quality of other people and yourself (ping, packet loss, bandwidth) in the person menu and profile, with an optional signal icon; styled dropdowns that match the theme everywhere; settings inputs aligned consistently on the right; a slim progress bar under a chat image while its full-size version loads; full-size images sent over direct peer-to-peer connections between Mumcord users (IPv6, router port mapping or the local network; no STUN or other external server), with fallback to the current transfer and a settings switch to turn direct connections off; only the in-game overlay stays, the window overlay is removed completely; a fix for games crashing when Mumcord closes while the in-game overlay is on. At the end of Epic 2, both as Beta: YouTube watch party (watch a video in sync in a channel) and screen sharing between Mumcord users (needs a direct connection)
3 Comfort and polish Global hotkeys beyond push-to-talk, full tray menu, import from the official Mumble client, whisper/shout, public server browser
4 Admin features ACL/permission editing, bans, channel management
5 Release and distribution Signed installers, auto-update, opt-in crash reports, store/package listings
6 GIF search Search for GIFs from the chat input

Later candidates, not scheduled: mobile apps (Android/iOS) and recording. A web version is not planned. On macOS there is no overlay at all.
