Installing VSCode

Ryan Godwin edited this page Jan 22, 2024 · 1 revision

VSCode is the recommended environment for using tools developed by the UAB Perioperative Data Science Team. The smoothest pathway is to finish setting up WSL before installing VSCode.

After WSL is setup, complete steps 2 and 3 of Microsoft's VSCode installation instructions. https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/remote/wsl

As step 3 indicates, after installing VSCode, you want to immediately install at minimum the wsl extension. For our development environment, install the Remote Container extension pack, which includes the WSL extension.

You can then launch vscode in any Ubuntu directory with

code .

If you cannot run additional Ubuntu shell commands without first exiting VSCode, you may have opened VSCode in Ubuntu before installing the WSL extension.
