Setting up WSL2

Ryan Godwin edited this page May 7, 2024 · 8 revisions

Follow these instructions to setup Windows Subsystem for Linux to use the tools created by the UAB Perioperative Data Science Team:

  1. Inside Windows Features, make sure "Virtual Machine Platform" and "Hyper-V" are enabled.
  2. Restart
  3. In an elevated Power Shell prompt, run wsl --install
  4. After Ubuntu installs, you will be prompted to enter a User Name and Password for the new Linux installation - Remember these as they will be used for root access
  5. Restart again
  6. Confirm WSL and Ubuntu installation with the command wsl -l -v in Power Shell. You should see Ubuntu listed with version 2.
  7. If not, run wsl --set-default-version 2 followed by wsl --update

You may need to launch Ubuntu from the start menu between steps 3 and 4 to get WSL to see the installation (which happens by default with step 2). If Ubuntu does not automatically install, it can also be installed from the Windows Store (preferably the most recent LTS version).
