What's new: the firmware version is now shown on the device's web page and in Home Assistant (Diagnostics -> Firmware Version).

Factory images (.factory.bin) are for the initial USB flash; OTA images (.ota.bin) are for over-the-air updates via the device's web page (or the ESPHome CLI/Dashboard). VAL3000 = ESP32-C3, VAL3100 = ESP32-C6. See the Firmware Guide wiki for flashing instructions.
