V12
A safety net for songs an update replaces, far fewer antivirus false positives on the download itself, and a few fixes.
What's new
- Songs an update replaces are backed up first. If a download would replace a song file you already have (same file name, different size) - usually an official re-upload, but also what happens to your own modified copy of an official song - the old file is first moved to a
.legacydownloader-backupsfolder inside your game folder, so nothing is lost. Old backups clean up after themselves: ones older than 30 days are deleted, and so are the oldest ones once the folder passes 5 GB (the newest set is always kept). In Settings there is a new Song backups section to switch backups off, change the 30 days / 5 GB limits, and Open backup folder. To get a song back, copy it from the backup folder into the matching folder undermaps. - The update check shows which songs would be replaced. The update check window says "N of these replace a different copy..." and lists those songs with checkboxes. Checked (the default) replaces the file, with the backup above. Unchecked keeps your version: the song is marked Keep my version and updates never replace it. The console shows the same warning.
Fixes
- Fewer antivirus false positives on the zip. Some antivirus programs (those built on Bitdefender's engine: Bitdefender, G Data, eScan, Emsisoft, VIPRE, Arcabit) flagged the V11.4 zip as a generic "downloader" the moment it was scanned. The cause was the self-updater's helper: it both swapped folders and started the app again from the same script, which looks like a dropper to that heuristic. The "start the app again" step now lives in its own small file (
bin\Relaunch.ps1). Updating itself behaves exactly as before. - The GUI launcher keeps PowerShell visible instead of hidden (a precaution). A hidden PowerShell started with the execution policy bypassed is a pattern antivirus programs dislike, so
LegacyDownloader-GUI.batnow leaves PowerShell's own window minimised. You will see a small PowerShell button on the taskbar while the tool is open (closing the tool closes it). The tool's own window opens normally. - Downloaded requirement installers are verified before they run. When the Requirements button downloads a Microsoft installer (Visual C++ redistributables, the Kinect SDKs), the file must carry a valid Microsoft signature, otherwise it is deleted and you get the official download link to install it yourself. Installers that ship inside the game's own
Supportfolder are used as before. - No more phantom editions in the song picker. A stray
.ipkdropped inmaps\or in a sub-folder used to show up as an "edition" namedmapsor after the sub-folder. Only songs directly inside amaps\<edition>folder count now, and the song count on the main window agrees with the picker. - Narrowing an edition that is only on the share now asks about deleting. For an edition the community sheet doesn't list (such as 3111, Just Dance Wii), unticking some of its songs - not all of them - never offered the Delete the files / Keep the files / Cancel prompt. It does now.
- Settings and the update check fit small screens. On a small or scaled display those windows could be taller than the screen, with the buttons out of reach. They now scroll, with Save / Download now / Cancel always visible.
- The "Custom share URL" hint in Settings is no longer cut off in Portuguese and Russian.
One thing to know
A modified copy of an official song (for example a custom map you made by replacing adeyyo_pc.ipk) still counts as that official song: an update replaces it with the server's file, and "Delete the files" can remove it. What changed is that the update check now tells you, and the replaced file is kept in the backup folder. Mark the song Keep my version (or untick it in the update check) to protect it from both. Songs that are not on the server at all (your own custom codenames) are never touched by updates, and not by "Delete the files" either.
Everything else is unchanged from V11.4
Whole-edition delete that spares your own songs and the deletion log, Keep my version, the single Delete / Keep / Cancel prompt, the song picker listing editions that are only on the share (3111), the self-update progress window and the update check that no longer hits GitHub's rate limit are all still there.
Upgrading
- From V10 / V11 / V11.1 / V11.2 / V11.3 / V11.4: click the Update Available button. If your network is one that hit the 403 on V10/V11, it may not appear until the hourly limit resets - in that case download
LegacyDownloaderV12.zipbelow and extract it over your old folder (keep yourconfig.txt). - From V9.x or earlier: delete everything in your old install folder except
config.txt, then extract this zip into that same folder.
Getting started
- Download
LegacyDownloaderV12.zipbelow and extract it anywhere. - Double-click
LegacyDownloader-GUI.bat. - Follow the on-screen setup - or open the tutorial for a full walkthrough.
Requirements
Windows with PowerShell 5.1 (built into every modern Windows install). Nothing else to install - rclone.exe ships inside the zip (its license notice is in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt).
Antivirus note
Some antivirus programs have flagged a release zip as a trojan shortly after it was published. It is a false positive: the zip contains only the PowerShell scripts in this repository, language files, an icon, two .bat launchers, and the official rclone.exe (which a few engines flag as a "hacktool" because it can copy files from the internet - it is the official, unmodified build). You can verify the download against the SHA-256 shown next to the asset on this page, or read the source in this repository first.
