Changes

  • Mod support: the game loads file-replacement mods in HedgeModManager's format, the one Unleashed and Marathon Recompiled use.
    • A mod is a folder with a mod.ini. Its files replace the game's files at the same path. Letter case does not matter.
    • When two mods replace the same file, the one higher in the list wins.
    • Code mods (DLLs, patches to the original executable) do not apply, since the game is recompiled.
  • Launcher Mods tab: put each mod in its own folder in mods beside the launcher, then switch mods on and off and change their order. The launcher writes mods/ModsDB.ini and cpkredir.ini.
  • Other mod managers: if cpkredir.ini points to another tool's ModsDB.ini, the game uses that list and the launcher leaves it alone.
  • Checking a mod: game.log lists each active mod (MODS mod=…) and every file it replaces the first time the game opens it (MODS_FILE).

Validation

  • Tests: CTest 142/142, including the new mod loader tests.
  • Mods: the packaged Windows build ran a test mod that swaps in the game's French text files. The title and menus came up in French.
  • Windows package: completed race checks on D3D12 (Frozen Forest) and Vulkan (Dolphin Resort).
    • One of three Vulkan runs crashed while the race loaded. Mods were not involved.
    • The other two Vulkan runs and the D3D12 run finished.
  • Linux package: passed a Vulkan startup smoke test in WSL.
  • Android: the APKs keep the existing signing certificate.

Downloads

  • Windows x64: download and extract the Windows ZIP; run FreeRidersRecompiled.exe.
  • Linux x64: download and extract the Linux archive; run FreeRidersRecompiled.
  • Android 10 or later: prefer android10-arm64.apk.
  • Android 9: use android-arm64.apk.
  • Android version code: 25. The companion licence archive applies to both APKs.
  • Checksums: SHA256SUMS.txt.

Use your own game disc image. No game data, private saves or test overrides are included.

Known limitations

  • Mods:
    • HedgeModManager does not list Free Riders yet.
    • On Android the mods folder sits in the app's files folder.
  • Being investigated (Issue #47):
    • a rare freeze of a few seconds;
    • a brief audio crackle;
    • a character occasionally saying a winning line after losing.
  • Mali GPUs: only the graphics start-up has been checked on Mali GPUs.
  • From v0.5.0:
    • lighting has not been compared with the Xbox 360;
    • split-screen two-player and full Grand Prix progression are not verified with the new runtime;
    • no camera motion inference on Linux or Android;
    • performance varies by device.
