Free Riders Recompiled 0.3.0 (preview) - VRM Avatar support
Experimental VRM Avatar support
You can now use your own VRM 0.x / VRM 1.0 model for the in-game AVATAR rider. In the launcher, choose Advanced > Avatar model > Browse, select a .vrm or binary .glb, then start the game and select AVATAR followed by Gear. AVATAR must already be available in your save; selecting a model does not unlock it.
- One remembered model setting follows either local player who selects AVATAR, with independent poses. Camera motion input is optional; controllers and keyboard controls also work.
- Main humanoid animation follows the game's evaluated clips, including root motion, jumping and stance reflection.
- Render the model with the scene's viewport and depth instead of adding it after the finished frame. This corrects Loading placement and lets subsequent HUD drawing remain in front.
- Use VRM hand positions for held items while retaining the game's item behavior.
- Support double-sided and unlit materials, texture colour handling, and model selection on Windows, Linux and Android. Ordinary GLBs without VRM humanoid mappings remain static.
- Include updated English/Traditional Chinese README instructions and a
VRM-Avatar.mdguide in desktop archives and the Android licences ZIP.
The Avatar body-type fix from PR #15 and the VRM integration in PR #19 are included. Camera motion input and the shader/D3D12 fixes from v0.2.1 are retained.
Downloads and updating
| Download | Support |
|---|---|
| Windows x64 ZIP | Windows 10/11; D3D12 or Vulkan; Camera motion runtime/models included |
| Linux x64 tar.gz | Vulkan; Camera motion is not enabled in this prebuilt package |
| Android arm64 APK | Android 9+; Vulkan; Camera motion is not enabled |
Extract the complete desktop archive into a fresh folder. Keep the bundled shaders.pack; on Windows also retain D3D12/, shader-tools/, pose/ and the DLLs. You can copy your existing settings.ini and save/ into the new desktop folder. If a model path no longer resolves, choose the file again. Model changes apply on the next game launch; Clear disables the model.
Android is 0.3.0, version code 9, signed with the same certificate as v0.2.1 for in-place updates. Its document picker imports a local model copy into app-specific storage. SHA256SUMS.txt covers all four downloads.
Validation and current limitations
- Release PR CI: Windows, Linux, macOS build checks and Android launcher checks passed.
- Local native tests: 110/110 Windows, 104/104 Linux passed. Python tooling: 238 tests, successful with 11 skipped.
- D3D12/Vulkan GPU regression checks cover viewport/scissor, shared and reversed depth, later overlays and multiple independent poses in one frame.
- Windows extracted archive tested outside the checkout through AVATAR Loading and racing for 15,000 presents per backend, using isolated saves/caches and scripted input with audio disabled. Screenshots inspected; held-item transforms observed. The prior development build also completed 15,500-present runs on both backends.
- Linux extracted archive reached 180 presents under WSL Vulkan. Android native libraries rebuilt; APK version, alignment and signing-certificate continuity verified.
- All downloads contain the same validated ABI 8 shader pack: 476 DXIL and 476 SPIR-V shaders. Camera dependencies match their pinned hashes. No personal model, settings or save is included.
VRM remains experimental: no full MToon shading, transparent blending, spring bones, facial expressions or finger animation. Poses and item grips can vary by model; high-detail models can reduce performance. The actual results screen, full two-player VRM gameplay and physical Linux/Android VRM gameplay need more testing. Device-specific issues reported in #16 and #17 remain open; this release does not claim to fix every slowdown or crash.
This is a preview. You need your own USA/Europe Sonic Free Riders disc image; the launcher installs its data. No disc assets are included.
Free Riders Recompiled 0.2.1 (preview) - Shader and D3D12 fixes
Shader compatibility and Windows startup fixes
This preview corrects the shader pack shipped with v0.2.0. Its old Vulkan shader layout could cause a white screen or device loss after the intro. All three downloads now contain the matching ABI 8 shaders.
- Add shader-pack version checks during packaging and loading. Old, incompatible, truncated, empty and zero-entry packs fail with an error instead of silently reaching the graphics path.
- Keep packaged launchers using their bundled shaders and tools, including when extracted inside a source checkout.
- Include the Microsoft D3D12 Agility runtime in the Windows ZIP, addressing the missing runtime behind some Windows 10 D3D12 startup failures (PR #14).
- Keep Camera motion input, the skeleton debug window, controller handoff and two-player support from v0.2.0.
Shader compatibility and launcher fixes: PR #18.
Updating
Extract the complete new archive into a fresh folder. Do not copy the old shaders.pack over the new one. On Windows, retain the D3D12/, shader-tools/ and pose/ folders and the bundled DLLs beside the programs.
| Download | Support |
|---|---|
| Windows x64 ZIP | Windows 10/11; D3D12 or Vulkan; Camera motion and skeleton debug window included |
| Linux x64 tar.gz | Vulkan; Camera motion is not enabled in this prebuilt package |
| Android arm64 APK | Android 9+; Vulkan; Camera motion is not enabled |
Android version is 0.2.1, version code 8, signed with the existing release certificate for in-place updates. The Android licences ZIP accompanies the APK. SHA256SUMS.txt covers all four downloads.
Validation and remaining issues
- Local Windows build: 106/106 native tests passed; Linux build: 100/100 passed.
- Python tooling: 236 tests run, successful with 11 skipped.
- Windows extracted archive tested through a single-player tutorial race for 7,200 frames per backend, with audio enabled, on D3D12 and Vulkan. Screenshots checked for the white-screen, aspect and exposure regression.
- Linux extracted archive reached 180 presented frames under Vulkan.
- Checked matching shader packs in every download, Windows D3D12 runtime signature/hash, Camera dependency hashes, and Android version, native libraries, alignment and signing-certificate continuity.
- Windows, Linux, macOS build checks and Android launcher CI passed. Native code was rebuilt locally; Linux/Android reused existing generated guest objects after verifying byte-identical generated source files. No new physical Android gameplay test was performed.
The shader mismatch was reproduced locally and corrected. The reported device-specific slowdown and Grand Prix crash in #16 and #17 still need affected-user confirmation; this release does not claim to resolve every crash. Both issues remain open.
This remains a preview. You need your own USA/Europe Sonic Free Riders disc image; the launcher installs its data. No disc data, save files or camera recordings are included. VRM features are not included.
Free Riders Recompiled 0.2.0 (preview) - Camera motion input
Camera motion input
Windows players can now use a webcam to control 1P with estimated 3D body motion. The Windows download includes the pose models and inference runtime, with their licences and third-party notices.
- Choose Camera > Motion in the launcher. Keep your whole body visible to the camera.
- Enable Skeleton debug window to see front and side views of the skeleton received by the game. This window shows joints, not the camera image.
- Controller input takes priority while you use it. Camera control resumes after 1.5 seconds of controller inactivity when tracking is valid; losing tracking leaves controller input available.
- Camera steering, crouch/jump, item throws and Kick Dash have been improved. Hand gestures are less likely to interfere with braking or acceleration, and balancing with your arms no longer cancels a valid Kick Dash as easily.
This uses a webcam's estimated relative 3D pose, not Kinect depth measurements. Tracking still depends on framing, lighting and the camera. See the Camera setup and gesture notes.
Other changes
- Add an Off option for 2P input.
- Fix the stretched viewport and incorrect exposure during single-player races with 2P disabled.
- Keep the existing two-player controller support and input-log/performance fixes.
- Update both READMEs with Camera setup and credits for ONNX Runtime, OpenCV Zoo and MediaPipe.
Downloads and platform support
| Download | Support |
|---|---|
| Windows x64 ZIP | Windows 10/11, D3D12 or Vulkan; Camera motion and skeleton debug window included |
| Linux x64 tar.gz | Vulkan; Camera motion is not enabled in this prebuilt package |
| Android arm64 APK | Android 9+, Vulkan; Camera motion is not enabled |
Android version is 0.2.0, version code 7, signed with the same local certificate as v0.1.5 for in-place updates. The Android licences ZIP accompanies the APK. SHA256SUMS.txt covers all four downloads.
Camera input is optional. Unpack the entire Windows ZIP so its pose/ folder and ONNX Runtime DLLs stay beside the programs. For single-player play, set 2P input to Off in Controls.
Validation
- Built locally from the source merged through PR #12, tagged at
713e710. Native code rebuilt for each platform; unchanged generated guest objects reused from the existing local disc builds. - GitHub CI passed for Windows, Linux, macOS build checks and Android launcher builds.
- Windows: 102/102 native tests passed. The extracted release reached 180 presented frames with both D3D12 and Vulkan; its bundled models loaded successfully and rejected a blank test image.
- Linux: 96/96 native tests passed; extracted Vulkan release reached 180 presented frames.
- Python tooling: 226 tests, successful with 11 skipped.
- Android arm64 APK built, with library contents, version, alignment and signing-certificate continuity verified. No new physical Android gameplay test was performed for this release.
- The maintainer manually tested the Windows Camera gestures and confirmed the final Kick Dash fix. Final archives received automated startup checks, not a full playthrough of every mode or stage.
This remains a preview. Existing device-specific crashes are not all resolved, and VRM features are not included. You need your own USA/Europe Sonic Free Riders disc image; the launcher installs its data. No disc data, save files or camera recordings are included in these downloads.
Free Riders Recompiled 0.1.5 (preview, currently 2P only)
Free Riders Recompiled 0.1.5 (preview)
Two-player gameplay update based on v0.1.4, incorporating PRs #9, #10, and #11. All three PRs have been merged into main. You need your own Sonic Free Riders (USA/Europe) disc image; no disc data is included.
Changes
- 2P support: each configured input follows the game's player identity through menu selection, Loading, and racing. Includes separate second-player input and split-screen viewport corrections.
- Gear menu: preserves cursor activation through page transitions and keeps the other player's menu responsive while one player's confirmation is pending. P2 no longer needs Back or the previous long wait after P1 confirms Gear in the tested flow.
- Input logging (#2): tracks changes per player so alternating controller polls no longer repeatedly log unchanged states.
- Small CPU cleanup: removes unused thread-cycle queries from indexed draws. Existing timing statistics remain available; a real-race FPS improvement has not been measured.
- Retains Control Settings, the Vulkan surface compatibility change from #4, and the crouch/jump fix from #5.
This release uses a separate branch based on v0.1.4 plus these changes and their required two-player input plumbing. Camera Input and VRM remain excluded.

Desktop archives include Control Settings for 1P/2P input sources, controllers, and bindings. Android retains its existing launcher interface; dual-controller gameplay on Android has not been physically tested. Android package version is 0.1.5 / code 6, signed with the same local certificate as v0.1.4. Licences are provided in the accompanying ZIP.
Unpack desktop builds into their own folder and select your installed game data or disc image. Preserve your existing saves when replacing an installation.
Verification
Built locally from the isolated release source. Windows native tests: 92/92; Linux: 85/85; Python: 217 tests, 11 skipped. Windows D3D12/Vulkan and Linux Vulkan passed 180-frame startup smoke tests. The regression suite covers player routing, Gear activation and wait handling, disconnects, Loading body replacement, race inputs, viewport bounds, and per-player log deduplication.
The two-player fixes were manually tested in Windows development builds, including Gear operation after P1 confirms. The isolated release port received automated regression and startup checks; a full race has not been manually replayed in every final package.
Archive contents were checked against the built binaries and shader pack. Android arm64 was built, and its ABI, version, native-library contents, and signing certificate were verified. Android has not been tested on a physical device in this release cycle.
Known limits
Forward/backward menu selection still requires an upward/downward right-stick gesture and can feel awkward. This release fixes player routing and the Gear stall; it does not redesign the gesture controls.
Existing startup-crash, gameplay, performance, and intermittent loading limitations still apply. This release does not claim to resolve all startup crashes or Issue #3.
SHA-256 checksums are provided in SHA256SUMS.txt.

Free Riders Recompiled 0.1.4 (preview)
Free Riders Recompiled 0.1.4 (preview)
A focused update based on v0.1.3, adding the crouch/jump fix from PR #8. You need your own Sonic Free Riders (USA/Europe) disc image; no disc data is included.
Changes
- More reliable crouching and jumping (#5): controller crouch input could also trigger the original Side gesture detector, causing the game to cancel crouch charging or release jumps. The Side override now follows the controller brake input and preserves existing brake/kick priority. This also fixes the reproduced cancellation when holding the left stick down during a jump release.
- Retains v0.1.3's desktop Control Settings (1P/2P input source, controller selection and key/button bindings) and Vulkan surface compatibility changes from #4.
- Android package version is 0.1.4 / code 5, signed with the same local certificate as v0.1.3.
PR #7 integrates the Control Settings/Vulkan changes into main; PR #8 contains the crouch/jump fix. This release is built from a separate branch based on v0.1.3, preserving the requested scope: no Camera Input, VRM, experimental two-player gameplay/split-screen, or the separate Issue #2 logging change. 1P/2P settings do not add two-player gameplay.

Desktop archives include the Control Settings launcher. Android retains the v0.1.3 launcher interface and receives the gameplay fix; its licences are in the accompanying ZIP. Unpack desktop builds into their own folder and select your installed game data or disc image. Preserve your existing saves when replacing an installation.
Verification
Built locally from the isolated release source. Windows native tests: 88/88; Linux: 81/81; Python: 217 tests, 11 skipped. Windows D3D12/Vulkan and Linux Vulkan passed 180-frame startup smoke tests. Archive contents were checked against the built binaries and shader pack.
The #5 regression runs the actual input hooks without game files and checks crouch/jump, stick-down, brake/kick priority and original detection outside controller racing. The fix was also checked in a Windows gameplay build, where manual testing reached S, S+ and X ranks. The original reporter's hardware has not been retested.
Android arm64 was built and its ABI, version, native-library contents and signature verified. It has not been tested on a physical Android device in this release cycle.
Known limits
Some startup crashes remain unresolved; the #4 surface-compatibility change is not a universal crash fix. Issue #3 remains unresolved. Existing gameplay, performance and intermittent loading limitations still apply; later main-branch performance work is not included.
SHA-256 checksums are provided in SHA256SUMS.txt.

Free Riders Recompiled 0.1.3 (preview)
A focused preview update based on v0.1.2.
You need your own Sonic Free Riders (USA/Europe) disc image. No disc data is included.
Changes
- Desktop Control Settings: choose input sources and controllers for 1P/2P, and change keyboard or gamepad button bindings. Settings persist between launches. These settings do not add new two-player gameplay or split-screen support.
- Vulkan compatibility (#4): swapchain creation now requests only image usages supported by the display surface. Surfaces without transfer-destination support use the existing render-target presentation path. Graphics backend and adapter details are logged earlier to help diagnose startup failures.
The Vulkan defect was reproduced with restricted surface capabilities and covered by regression tests. The original issue reporter still needs to retest; this is not a confirmed fix for every D3D12 or Vulkan startup failure.
This release deliberately excludes Camera Input, VRM, experimental two-player gameplay/split-screen changes, and the separate Issue #2 logging change. It is built from the isolated release branch, rather than the current experimental main branch.

Unpack the desktop archive into its own folder, launch FreeRidersRecompiled, and select your own installed game data or disc image. Keep existing saves before replacing an installation.
Verification
Built locally from the isolated release source. Windows native tests: 87/87; Linux native tests: 80/80; Python: 217 tests, 11 skipped. Vulkan presentation regression tests passed on Windows and Linux. Windows D3D12/Vulkan and Linux Vulkan reached the 180-frame startup smoke-test limit. Android arm64 was built and its package/version/signature verified; it has not been tested on a device in this release cycle. Physical multi-controller interaction and a full manual UI walkthrough have not been verified.
Known limits
This is a pre-release. The existing v0.1.2 gameplay, performance, and intermittent loading limitations still apply. Issue #3 remains unresolved and needs a native crash dump; it is not addressed by this release. Later performance changes on main are not included.
Checksums are provided in SHA256SUMS.txt.

Free Riders Recompiled 0.1.2 (preview)
A preview update of Free Riders Recompiled, an unofficial port of the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Free Riders.
Important
No game data is included. You need your own Sonic Free Riders (USA, Europe) disc image (.iso); the launcher installs the game's data from it. This is still a pre-release.
Changes since 0.1.1
- Finishing a race no longer ends the game. With a save in use the player is signed in, so a race awards an achievement, and that request was not handled: the game stopped as the results menu opened. Achievements are now accepted (and listed in
game.log; there is no Xbox Live to award them to). - Grand Prix loading was tested another twelve times with no failure.

Unpack into a folder of its own, start FreeRidersRecompiled, choose your disc image, then Start game. The Android APK installs over 0.1.0/0.1.1 and keeps the installed game and saves.
Known limits
- Only the USA/Europe disc is supported.
- Loading can still fail now and then (roughly one load in four of the Grand Prix's second part before 0.1.1, and rarely at a race start): a loading thread can take a job the game has not finished preparing. If it happens, start the game again; a proper fix is being worked on.
- Grand Prix has been played through Tails's Ring Grab Challenge; later chapters are untested.
- The heaviest race scenes can drop to about 53 fps, so game time runs slightly slow there.
- Android has been tried in the emulator and on one Adreno 750 handheld; please report problems with your device's model.

Free Riders Recompiled 0.1.1 (preview)
A preview update of Free Riders Recompiled, an unofficial port of the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Free Riders.
Important
No game data is included. You need your own Sonic Free Riders (USA, Europe) disc image (.iso); the launcher installs the game's data from it. This is still a pre-release.
Changes since 0.1.0
- Grand Prix: its second part no longer aborts while loading (about one load in four failed with a "pure virtual function call"); three missing kernel string functions it uses are implemented.
- Speed: races run at about 57–60 fps again (0.1.0's launcher accidentally switched on a profiler, which cost up to 40%), and the renderer binds less state per draw.
- Scaled windows: a window or full screen that is not 1280×720 no longer shows the whole screen in one colour (blue in races, black in story scenes, flashing colours on Android).
- Android:
- Textures now show on GPUs without BC (DXT) formats, such as Adreno.
- The game survives the screen surface being lost.
shaders.packcomes inside the APK, so there is nothing to pick by hand.
- Shaders: the game creates all 468 of its shaders while it boots, so the bundled pack is complete; Linux and Android no longer stop on a missing shader.
- Windows: all shaders are compiled with the bundled DirectX Shader Compiler.

Unpack into a folder of its own, start FreeRidersRecompiled, choose your disc image, then Start game. Settings, saves and game.log are kept beside the launcher (on Android, in the app's files directory).
What works
- Title, menus, Free Race from start to results, Grand Prix story scenes and races (tested through the start of Tails's chapter), saving records.
- Playing without Kinect: buttons stand in for voice commands, the pad for body movements (see the README's controls).
- Launcher in English and Traditional Chinese; window size, full screen, graphics backend and more.
- Android: touch controls and tilt steering; textures are decoded for GPUs without BC formats.
Known limits
- Only the USA/Europe disc is supported.
- Linux and Android draw only the shaders in the bundled
shaders.pack; a shader missing from it stops the game there (Windows translates missing shaders itself). - Android has been tested in the emulator and briefly on an Adreno 750 device; please report problems with your device's model.
- The APK is signed with a development key.
