Changes

  • Race map at a wide screen's edge (#145): with the HUD pushed to the edges at ultrawide sizes, the minimap's racer markers went to the right edge while the map itself stayed where it is at 16:9. The map now goes with them.
  • Kinect calibration (#97, #132): the launcher's Kinect preview has a Calibrate button that walks you through standing still, crouching, jumping and leaning each way. It sets the crouch depth from your own crouch. A shallow crouch never reached the 15 cm default, and since a jump is rising out of a crouch, jumps didn't register either. You can also set Crouch depth by hand (for example 10 cm).
  • Linux file dialogs (#130): Browse now opens your desktop's own file dialog (KDE's, GNOME's, …) through the XDG desktop portal. zenity and kdialog are only used when there is no portal.
  • A Windows game window that keeps answering: the game's window now has its own thread for its messages. While the game was busy (translating a shader, loading), its title bar didn't bring it to the front and Alt+Enter and Alt+F4 did nothing. A close that the game doesn't answer within five seconds now ends it.
  • Webcam picture in the launcher (Windows): next to the camera's Test, Show picture opens a window with what the webcam actually sends, its size and frame rate, or why nothing arrives.

macOS and iOS builds are coming in 0.10.0: the macOS build runs, but on a Mac the game currently hits a GPU fault after Start on the title screen.

Validation

  • Unit tests: CTest passed on Linux (145). GitHub Actions builds and tests passed on Windows, Linux, macOS and Android for every change.
  • Windows package: race checks on D3D12, Vulkan, and D3D12 in a 21:9 window. Every pipeline was prepared, no shader was left untranslated and the save was left unchanged.
  • Linux package: Vulkan start-up smoke test in WSL, all 455 pipelines prepared.
  • AYN Thor: this release's Android libraries prepared all 455 Vulkan pipelines and ran a Free Race at full speed (60 fps, race speed 1.00). With each drawn frame made 20 ms slower on purpose, the race still ran at full speed (1.00). The APKs keep the existing signing certificate.
  • Race map (#145): a scripted Free Race at 22:9 with the HUD at the edges, on Windows; the map and its markers are at the top right together.
  • Window thread (Windows): with the game stalled, the window kept answering, Alt+Enter switched to full screen and back, and Alt+F4 closed it.
  • Not tested: the calibration with a real Kinect; the Linux portal on KDE (tested with GNOME's portal in WSL); the flicker reported in #145, which didn't happen in our runs.

Downloads

  • Windows x64: download and extract the Windows ZIP; run FreeRidersRecompiled.exe.
  • Linux x64: download and extract the Linux archive; run FreeRidersRecompiled.
  • Android 10 or later: prefer android10-arm64.apk.
  • Android 9: use android-arm64.apk.
  • Android version code: 46. The companion licence archive applies to both APKs.
  • Checksums: SHA256SUMS.txt.

Use your own game disc image. No game data, private saves or test overrides are included.

Known limitations

The same as v0.8.2.

Also being looked at:

  • steering near power sections (#123);
  • the flicker reported in #145;
  • the Kinect v2 stop-sign pause and Relay with one Kinect v2 (#132).
