FRIZZ v0.9
The first public release of FRIZZ, an alternative firmware that turns the CHOMPI into a stereo effects box and looper for whatever you plug into its AUX input.
It's v0.9, not 1.0: everything below has been tested on a CHOMPI, but expect controls to keep changing before 1.0.
What's in it
- Looper: free-length loops, or loops quantized to whole bars of an incoming MIDI clock (hold PLAY, press LOOP). Up to 2:45. The transport knob does varispeed in fifths and octaves, reverse, and scrub while paused.
- Twelve punch-in effects on the white keys, in signal order: freezer (beat repeat), pitch shifter, wavefolder, bitcrusher, DJ filter, flanger, resonator, slicer, wow & flutter, tape stop, then delay and reverb as sends whose tails ring out. Hold a key to play an effect; hold it and tap SHIFT to latch it. Knobs 1-4 shape the effect you touched last, with the same job on every effect.
- Randomizer on the last white key: plays 1 to 5 random effects with random settings on a one-bar gate pattern (17 patterns, plus pulse width, chance and shift). Your own knob settings come back after each gate.
- Master compressor on the 14th white key: amount, ratio, speed and a parallel mix. Saved on the card.
- FX scenes on the dark keys: a blank scene that clears everything, plus four slots that save every effect's knobs and latches to the SD card. Recall instantly for a drop, or SHIFT + scene key to morph to it, landing on the next bar line.
- Tempo: the effects lock to the loop once there is one, otherwise to MIDI clock (TRS or USB), otherwise to tap tempo (SHIFT + LOOP).
- Input/loop mix, input gain and output gain on the VOLUME knob. The mode switch can send the dry input to the headphones while the master out carries the loop and effects.
The manual covers every control. Start with the quick guide.
Install
- Back up your SD card.
- Delete every
.binfrom the top folder of the card and copyFRIZZ.bin(below) there. - Put the card in and switch on. A slow rainbow means it's installing; FRIZZ starts by itself afterwards.
It works on a CHOMPI running any stock firmware (TAPE, TEMPO or WAVE), doesn't touch the bootloader, and you go back to stock the same way. Leave the card in: FRIZZ keeps its scenes and settings in a FRIZZ/ folder it creates on first start. Full instructions, including going back to stock and the multi-firmware launcher: INSTALL.md.
Known limitations
- The effects act on the live input as well as the loop. Whether the master out should get a dry-input option is still open; for now, the mode switch gives you a dry input on the headphones only.
- No overdub, and the loop is gone at power-off.
- The built-in microphone isn't used, and there's no MIDI out. MIDI in is clock only.
- The 13th white key does nothing yet.

Credits
FRIZZ builds on the CHOMPI open-source release by CHOMPI Club and was forked from its WAVE firmware. It runs on Electrosmith's Daisy platform, and several effects are ported from Bastl Instruments' Kastle 2 FX Wizard. FRIZZ is an independent project, not an official CHOMPI Club release. Code under MIT; see THIRD_PARTY.md and TRADEMARKS.md.
