Emerald 3DS v0.4.0
This download does not contain the game. Download Emerald3DS-v0.4.0-Windows.zip below and follow the installation and update guide. You need your own dump of Pokémon Emerald (USA, Europe), Pokémon Esmeralda (Spain), Pokémon Émeraude (France) or Pokémon Versione Smeraldo (Italy). Updating from 0.3.x keeps your save; this release changes the game data, so generate the pack again with the new builder (Windows ZIP below) or with the web builder at emerald-3ds.com, which needs no download. A Quick Update of the executable alone is not enough this time.
v0.4.0
Pokémon Emerald 3Ds Dual Screen is now Emerald 3DS, with a new logo and HOME Menu banner. The biggest release so far, and the first with so many people behind it: thank you all.
Highlights
-
The game in French and Italian.
Build the game from your own Pokémon Émeraude (France) or Pokémon Versione Smeraldo (Italy) ROM: the builders pick the language from the ROM. Texts, graphics, braille, credits and Trainer Hill come from your ROM, the touch screen and the port's menus are translated, and the Pokédex shows metres and kilograms. Every release now carries English, Spanish, French and Italian.
French by @andyst-dev and @Sneazynek (PRs #34, #43, #62); Italian by @andyst-dev (PRs #63, #75). -
Local wireless play (experimental).
Still experimental: expect bugs, and keep a backup of your save before you try it. Two to four 3DS systems nearby can meet in the Union Room, trade and battle in the Direct Corner, use the Berry Blender, play the wireless minigames, enter link contests and take on the Battle Tower's link multi battle, through an emulated Wireless Adapter. Only identical builds link (same version and language).

Day and night.
Optional morning, day, sunset and night lighting in 2D and in voxel, with lit windows and city lamps at night, the sun and shadows moving with the hour, a clock that can run from 1X to 120X, berries that grow with it and optional time-of-day grass encounters on eleven routes. Everything is off by default (OPTIONS > ENHANCEMENTS); Emerald's daily events and the save format are untouched.
By @jesus0m (Jesus Oliva), PR #57. -
Follower Pokémon.
OPTIONS > ENHANCEMENTS > FOLLOWER: your lead Pokémon walks behind you with its HeartGold/SoulSilver overworld sprite, comes out of and goes back into its Poké Ball, follows you through doors and answers with its cry and a message when you talk to it. The builder downloads those sprites and texts for you; the visible wild Pokémon use them too. -
Voxel overworld in stereoscopic 3D.
On a New 3DS, with the 3D slider up, the voxel world is drawn once per eye: buildings, trees, relief and shadows stand at their own depth. OPTIONS > SETTINGS 2/2 has 3D WORLD (AUTO, ON, OFF) and 3D DEPTH.
By @darkmattericecoffee, PR #67. -
More of Hoenn in voxel.
The voxel world reaches much further than in 0.3: Slateport is finished, Mauville, Rustboro and Petalburg are revised, and many more towns have their first buildings; Route 110's Cycling Road stands as a real bridge next to the two-storey Trick House; the mountain routes (111 to 115) rise in terraces; Rusturf Tunnel is carved out of the rock; Route 109's beach and Rustboro's fountain are rebuilt; and Littleroot's rooms, the Pokémon Centers and the Mart are refurnished. It is still a work in progress: many parts of the map, and above all most interiors, are still flat, and the Battle Frontier is only a very early start. -
An HD battle interface.
The info boxes and the text box are drawn at the top screen's full resolution, and in a 3D battle the text box slides in as the cinema bars leave. The 3D battle now works properly on real consoles and keeps its depth through stat changes, blended backgrounds and see-through moves.
Hardware fixes by @darkmattericecoffee, PR #89. -
Physical/special split.
An option (off by default) that gives each move its own category, with category icons on the summary and the touch move buttons; trainers' AI follows it too.
By @eathanpage, PRs #30 and #66.
New options and features
- Four new ENHANCEMENTS: IVs and EVs on the summary, "Use another REPEL?" when one wears off, infinite TMs and running indoors; Fly and Flash can be used from the Bag with HMS WITHOUT MOVE.
By @Deunnis, PRs #49 and #52. - 3D BLUR strength, from 10% to 100% instead of on and off.
By @Deunnis, PR #55. - REAL-TIME PACING (off by default): the music no longer clicks when the console takes too long over a frame, and the field keeps real time.
By @darkmattericecoffee, PR #71. - Choose your Quick Ball: arrows on the Quick Ball plate cycle through every ball in the Bag.
By @MarcosChavarria, PR #41. - 1.5x speed, between 1x and 2x.
- A new SAVE screen on the bottom screen: your save shown as a plate with your trainer, location, Pokédex, time, badges and party.
- A red Pokédex on the touch menu's POKéDEX button.
By @luksgrin, PR #91. - The clock on the map: the bottom screen's map shows the hour, and the time band and clock speed with day/night on.
- Visible wild Pokémon reworked: they stay after a battle or a menu and across map borders, appear with a rustle in the grass or a splash in the water, and only MANY replaces random encounters.
Improvements
- The wide screen: weather, Poké Ball battle transitions, the healing machine, egg hatching, the trade scene and the cable car fill the 400-pixel screen.
By @eathanpage, PR #58. - The legendaries' cutscenes (Groudon and Kyogre's fight, Rayquaza's arrival) fill the screen, Rayquaza comes down in its ray of light again, and no battle platform shows at the edge of the evolution scene.
By @eathanpage, PR #92. - Move backgrounds fill the wide screen.
By @Deunnis, PR #54. - The Pokédex page of a Pokémon just caught is shown whole.
By @Deunnis, PR #50. - Voxel details: reflections appear as you step onto a puddle; the moving truck, the potted plant and the walls at lowered map edges are drawn right.
By @Deunnis, PRs #48, #61, #79 and #84. - Map edges: past a map's corner the camera shows the nearest map's border, and entering a small town no longer changes the zoom.
- Night lamps light a round pool on the ground instead of orange squares.
- Old 3DS: the voxel world gives its memory back when it is off, so 2D battles and the field keep their 3D, and the bottom screen redraws much less.
- Wally's catching lesson uses the touch-screen battle menus.
Fixes
- With the speed at x2 and above, a Pokémon sent out of its ball made no cry.
By @Faareoh, PR #56. - Saves backed up from a cartridge or exported from mGBA were refused, leaving only NEW GAME.
By @Deunnis, PR #47. - The battle intro could hang with your trainer sliding up the screen for ever.
By @darkmattericecoffee, PR #71. - The clock froze after starting a new game on an empty save.
- After a battle, an evolution or an egg hatching could show a piece of the battle's info box instead of the Pokémon.
- A soft reset no longer leaves the map or the cheats on the bottom screen over the intro.
- In Spanish, French and Italian, Easy Chat listed the moves (and, in French, the Pokémon) in English alphabetical order; the French link Trainer Card and Pokéblock menu used the English layout.
- The translated games keep each ROM's own word order for "wild" and "foe" names.
By @andyst-dev, PR #75.
Building from source
tools/bootstrap.py --make --french-romand--italian-rombuild the French and Italian games.make VOXEL=0compiles again, the tests run on Python 3.11, and the voxel generator accepts layouts without a secondary tileset (by @andyst-dev, PRs #37, #38, #73); macOS and BSD build fixes (by @yesyes-source, PR #88); the build stops on a song header the relocation table misses (by @Deunnis, PRs #53, #64).
Thanks
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this release: @andyst-dev, @Sneazynek, @eathanpage, @jesus0m, @darkmattericecoffee, @Deunnis, @Faareoh, @MarcosChavarria, @luksgrin and @yesyes-source. Follower sprites come from pret/pokeheartgold and their messages from Poké Corpus; the builder downloads them on your computer, they are not part of this release.
