Emerald 3DS v0.4.0
This download does not contain the game. Download Emerald3DS-v0.4.0-Windows.zip below and follow the installation and update guide. You need your own dump of Pokémon Emerald (USA, Europe), Pokémon Esmeralda (Spain), Pokémon Émeraude (France) or Pokémon Versione Smeraldo (Italy). Updating from 0.3.x keeps your save; this release changes the game data, so generate the pack again with the new builder (Windows ZIP below) or with the web builder at emerald-3ds.com, which needs no download. A Quick Update of the executable alone is not enough this time.
v0.4.0
Pokémon Emerald 3Ds Dual Screen is now Emerald 3DS, with a new logo and HOME Menu banner. The biggest release so far, and the first with so many people behind it: thank you all.
Highlights
-
The game in French and Italian.
Build the game from your own Pokémon Émeraude (France) or Pokémon Versione Smeraldo (Italy) ROM: the builders pick the language from the ROM. Texts, graphics, braille, credits and Trainer Hill come from your ROM, the touch screen and the port's menus are translated, and the Pokédex shows metres and kilograms. Every release now carries English, Spanish, French and Italian.
French by @andyst-dev and @Sneazynek (PRs #34, #43, #62); Italian by @andyst-dev (PRs #63, #75). -
Local wireless play (experimental).
Still experimental: expect bugs, and keep a backup of your save before you try it. Two to four 3DS systems nearby can meet in the Union Room, trade and battle in the Direct Corner, use the Berry Blender, play the wireless minigames, enter link contests and take on the Battle Tower's link multi battle, through an emulated Wireless Adapter. Only identical builds link (same version and language).
By @eathanpage, PR #76. -
Day and night.
Optional morning, day, sunset and night lighting in 2D and in voxel, with lit windows and city lamps at night, the sun and shadows moving with the hour, a clock that can run from 1X to 120X, berries that grow with it and optional time-of-day grass encounters on eleven routes. Everything is off by default (OPTIONS > ENHANCEMENTS); Emerald's daily events and the save format are untouched.
By @jesus0m (Jesus Oliva), PR #57. -
Follower Pokémon.
OPTIONS > ENHANCEMENTS > FOLLOWER: your lead Pokémon walks behind you with its HeartGold/SoulSilver overworld sprite, comes out of and goes back into its Poké Ball, follows you through doors and answers with its cry and a message when you talk to it. The builder downloads those sprites and texts for you; the visible wild Pokémon use them too. -
Voxel overworld in stereoscopic 3D.
On a New 3DS, with the 3D slider up, the voxel world is drawn once per eye: buildings, trees, relief and shadows stand at their own depth. OPTIONS > SETTINGS 2/2 has 3D WORLD (AUTO, ON, OFF) and 3D DEPTH.
By @darkmattericecoffee, PR #67. -
More of Hoenn in voxel.
The voxel world reaches much further than in 0.3: Slateport is finished, Mauville, Rustboro and Petalburg are revised, and many more towns have their first buildings; Route 110's Cycling Road stands as a real bridge next to the two-storey Trick House; the mountain routes (111 to 115) rise in terraces; Rusturf Tunnel is carved out of the rock; Route 109's beach and Rustboro's fountain are rebuilt; and Littleroot's rooms, the Pokémon Centers and the Mart are refurnished. It is still a work in progress: many parts of the map, and above all most interiors, are still flat, and the Battle Frontier is only a very early start. -
An HD battle interface.
The info boxes and the text box are drawn at the top screen's full resolution, and in a 3D battle the text box slides in as the cinema bars leave. The 3D battle now works properly on real consoles and keeps its depth through stat changes, blended backgrounds and see-through moves.
Hardware fixes by @darkmattericecoffee, PR #89. -
Physical/special split.
An option (off by default) that gives each move its own category, with category icons on the summary and the touch move buttons; trainers' AI follows it too.
By @eathanpage, PRs #30 and #66.
New options and features
- Four new ENHANCEMENTS: IVs and EVs on the summary, "Use another REPEL?" when one wears off, infinite TMs and running indoors; Fly and Flash can be used from the Bag with HMS WITHOUT MOVE.
By @Deunnis, PRs #49 and #52. - 3D BLUR strength, from 10% to 100% instead of on and off.
By @Deunnis, PR #55. - REAL-TIME PACING (off by default): the music no longer clicks when the console takes too long over a frame, and the field keeps real time.
By @darkmattericecoffee, PR #71. - Choose your Quick Ball: arrows on the Quick Ball plate cycle through every ball in the Bag.
By @MarcosChavarria, PR #41. - 1.5x speed, between 1x and 2x.
- A new SAVE screen on the bottom screen: your save shown as a plate with your trainer, location, Pokédex, time, badges and party.
- A red Pokédex on the touch menu's POKéDEX button.
By @luksgrin, PR #91. - The clock on the map: the bottom screen's map shows the hour, and the time band and clock speed with day/night on.
- Visible wild Pokémon reworked: they stay after a battle or a menu and across map borders, appear with a rustle in the grass or a splash in the water, and only MANY replaces random encounters.
Improvements
- The wide screen: weather, Poké Ball battle transitions, the healing machine, egg hatching, the trade scene and the cable car fill the 400-pixel screen.
By @eathanpage, PR #58. - The legendaries' cutscenes (Groudon and Kyogre's fight, Rayquaza's arrival) fill the screen, Rayquaza comes down in its ray of light again, and no battle platform shows at the edge of the evolution scene.
By @eathanpage, PR #92. - Move backgrounds fill the wide screen.
By @Deunnis, PR #54. - The Pokédex page of a Pokémon just caught is shown whole.
By @Deunnis, PR #50. - Voxel details: reflections appear as you step onto a puddle; the moving truck, the potted plant and the walls at lowered map edges are drawn right.
By @Deunnis, PRs #48, #61, #79 and #84. - Map edges: past a map's corner the camera shows the nearest map's border, and entering a small town no longer changes the zoom.
- Night lamps light a round pool on the ground instead of orange squares.
- Old 3DS: the voxel world gives its memory back when it is off, so 2D battles and the field keep their 3D, and the bottom screen redraws much less.
- Wally's catching lesson uses the touch-screen battle menus.
Fixes
- With the speed at x2 and above, a Pokémon sent out of its ball made no cry.
By @Faareoh, PR #56. - Saves backed up from a cartridge or exported from mGBA were refused, leaving only NEW GAME.
By @Deunnis, PR #47. - The battle intro could hang with your trainer sliding up the screen for ever.
By @darkmattericecoffee, PR #71. - The clock froze after starting a new game on an empty save.
- After a battle, an evolution or an egg hatching could show a piece of the battle's info box instead of the Pokémon.
- A soft reset no longer leaves the map or the cheats on the bottom screen over the intro.
- In Spanish, French and Italian, Easy Chat listed the moves (and, in French, the Pokémon) in English alphabetical order; the French link Trainer Card and Pokéblock menu used the English layout.
- The translated games keep each ROM's own word order for "wild" and "foe" names.
By @andyst-dev, PR #75.
Building from source
tools/bootstrap.py --make --french-romand--italian-rombuild the French and Italian games.make VOXEL=0compiles again, the tests run on Python 3.11, and the voxel generator accepts layouts without a secondary tileset (by @andyst-dev, PRs #37, #38, #73); macOS and BSD build fixes (by @yesyes-source, PR #88); the build stops on a song header the relocation table misses (by @Deunnis, PRs #53, #64).
Thanks
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this release: @andyst-dev, @Sneazynek, @eathanpage, @jesus0m, @darkmattericecoffee, @Deunnis, @Faareoh, @MarcosChavarria, @luksgrin and @yesyes-source. Follower sprites come from pret/pokeheartgold and their messages from Poké Corpus; the builder downloads them on your computer, they are not part of this release.

Emerald 3Ds Dual Screen v0.3.1
This download does not contain the game. Download Emerald3DS-v0.3.1-Windows.zip below and follow the installation and update guide. You need your own dump of Pokémon Emerald (USA, Europe) or Pokémon Esmeralda (Spain). Updating from 0.3.0 keeps your save; this release changes the game data, so generate the pack again with the new builder (Windows ZIP below) or with the web builder at emerald-3ds.com, which needs no download. A Quick Update of the executable alone is not enough this time.
v0.3.1
A bug-fix release on top of 0.3.0.
Highlights
-
Shops on the touch screen.
The BUY screen now opens on the bottom screen, on the same green as the bag you sell from, while the top screen keeps the world, in 2D and in voxel. It works by touch: tap an item to pick it and again to buy it, drag the list to scroll it, drag to change how many, and tap YES or NO. It used to show a black background in the top-left corner of the screen. -
A new icon and banner on the HOME Menu, for the forwarder CIA and the 3DSX.
-
Two crashes fixed.
Taking a fossil in the Mirage Tower crashed the game as the tower began to shake, and Hyper Beam could crash a battle (an original game bug that is harmless on the GBA).
Fixes
- The stats box shown on a level up was hidden behind the battle text box and ran off the bottom of the screen; it is drawn over the text box again, whole.
- Sootopolis's drought weather faded the screen to black.
- Trainer Hill floors had no maps or walls.
By @Trukitro, PR #25. - Spinda had no spots.
- Graphics that were missing or wrong now look as on the GBA:
- the evolution scene's moving background;
- the big Poké Ball, Elite Four mugshot, Rayquaza and grid battle transitions;
- the PP colours in battle, Pokédex footprints and the area page's glow;
- the contest applause meter, turn numbers and results window;
- the Secret Base decoration preview;
- the Match Call frame on the field and the underwater map name frame;
- the Pokénav condition screen's cancel icon;
- the Battle Factory screens, the Trainer Hill records, the Battle Pyramid floor colours and the slots' Reel Time window.
Thanks
Thanks to @Trukitro for the Trainer Hill fix.

Emerald 3Ds Dual Screen v0.3.0
This download does not contain the game. Download Emerald3DS-v0.3.0-Windows.zip below and follow the installation and update guide. You need your own dump of Pokémon Emerald (USA, Europe) or, new in this release, Pokémon Esmeralda (Spain). Updating from 0.2.x keeps your save; this release changes the game data, so generate the pack again with the new builder (Windows ZIP below) or with the web builder at emerald-3ds.com, which needs no download. A Quick Update of the executable alone is not enough this time.
v0.3.0
Highlights
-
The game in Spanish.
Build the game from your own Pokémon Esmeralda (Spain) ROM: the web and Windows builders recognise it and pick the language from the ROM, and every release now carries both languages. Texts, graphics, braille, credits and Trainer Hill come from your ROM; the touch screen has Spanish labels and the Pokédex shows metres and kilograms.Emerald3DS-es.3dsxis the Spanish executable for future Quick Updates (the builders already install it asEmerald3DS.3dsx; if you download it by hand, rename it toEmerald3DS.3dsxso the HOME Menu forwarder still finds it).
Translation work by @jesus0m (Jesus Oliva), PR #6. -
ENHANCEMENTS and CHEATS tabs in OPTIONS (everything off by default).
By @papacult, PR #11.- ENHANCEMENTS: SPEED fast-forward from 1x to 4x (also ZR/ZL on New 3DS, with music and sound at normal speed); visible wild Pokémon that wander the grass, caves and water instead of random encounters; EXP for catching; the modern Exp Share; trade evolutions at Lv. 40; field HMs with the badge alone.
- CHEATS: wild encounter rate, shiny odds, every Poké Ball catches, instant victory, fast egg hatching, infinite money, Pokédex (Hoenn full, National on or full) and GIVE ITEMS.
-
Quick ball.
In wild battles, a button beside FIGHT (or R) throws the last ball you used without opening the bag.
By @papacult, PR #11. -
Soft reset.
A+B+START+SELECT now restarts the game as on the GBA instead of crashing.
By @papacult, PR #12. -
A redesigned bottom screen.
The whole touch screen has a new, more polished look:- a new button column of emerald plates with the game's own icons, plus a Y button for the registered item (the console's Y now acts as SELECT) and a RUN toggle that makes running the default (B walks);
- X puts a focus ring on the column, so it can be used with the D-pad and A/B;
- OPTIONS in a 2x6 grid, the map in a recessed frame with its area name, and one light green background behind the game's own screens;
- new battle menus: DS/3DS-style plates over a teal backdrop, FIGHT with Rayquaza's silhouette, the quick ball, the party's six balls, and moves in their type's colour with PP in the game's warning colours. The screen fades in as the battle starts, and the menus no longer drop frames;
- the title screen shows the developer's logo and the game's version.
-
Battles with the 3D slider.
The scenery sits behind the screen and each side's Pokémon stands at its own depth, with the text box at the screen plane, in classic battles and in 3D BATTLE. -
Flash works.
Caves that need Flash (and the Battle Pyramid) now show their darkness and the circle of light around the player: the GBA's own circle in 2D, a soft, flickering pool of light in voxel.
Voxel 3D improvements
Voxel 3D is still experimental. Expect visual issues and glitches, particularly around mountains, ledges and maps that have not yet been fully adapted.
- 3D BATTLE cinematic entrance: the camera cranes up from the field, swoops in with a dolly zoom and lands with a push and a short quake, with speed lines, a flash and cinema bars.
- Mountains on Routes 104, 105, 106 and 116 rebuilt level by level on the tile grid, and Route 106 now joins Dewford properly. Still being refined.
- Sliding doors (Pokémon Centers, Marts, gyms) open as you walk through them.
By @Trukitro, PR #17. - More rooms modelled: the house with a bed, Mr. Briney's house, the Pretty Petal flower shop; the walls of 21 rooms and Rustboro's school; doorways for the stairs of Rustboro's flats, the Devon Corporation, Lilycove's motel, the Fossil Maniac's house and the Trick House; Petalburg's gym walls and Dewford's gym maze.
By @Trukitro, PR #19. - Ledge jumps are drawn as an arc.
By @Trukitro, PR #16. - A visible wild shiny sparkles more often, so it can be told apart.
By @Trukitro, PR #20. - The Surf Pokémon lies on the water under the rider, bobbing, with shadows.
- Dewford's small tree is modelled.
Performance
More work for Old 3DS:
- The sound mixer now works in fixed point, and memory copies and decompression are faster.
- A performance pass over the voxel field, 3D battles and the bottom screen.
- Towns: the furniture checks for each character are done once instead of every frame, so buildings no longer arrive late.
Faster builder
Scenery generation takes about half as long as in 0.2.0, producing the same game data pack.
Fixes
- Stat changes in battle showed no animation, only their sound (classic battles and 3D BATTLE).
- Drums played about three times too fast and too high; cymbals, triangles and bells now sound as on the GBA.
- The evolution scene showed half a Pokémon on a black screen.
By @Trukitro, PR #16. - The poison step's flash on the field was not drawn; a violet veil now stands in for it, in 2D and voxel.
By @Trukitro, PR #16. - The bag's item icon was drawn outside its box, under the list.
Voxel 3D
- Characters were hidden by furniture against the back wall.
By @Deunnis, PR #9 (issue #4). - Characters using the Pokémon Center's PC were hidden behind the counter.
By @Trukitro, PR #16. - Rug borders and wall tops stood up as television sets, beds and mats in some rooms.
By @Trukitro, PR #19. - Leaving a 3D BATTLE could fall back to 2D.
Thanks
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this release: @jesus0m, @papacult, @Trukitro and @Deunnis.

Alpha 0.2.0
Emerald 3Ds Dual Screen v0.2.0
This download does not contain the game. Download Emerald3DS-v0.2.0-Windows.zip below and follow the installation and update guide. You need your own dump of Pokémon Emerald (USA, Europe). Updating from 0.1.x keeps your save; this release changes the game data, so generate the pack again with the new builder (Windows ZIP below) or with the web builder at emerald-3ds.com, which needs no download.
v0.2.0
Highlights
-
Original game menus on the bottom screen, fully touch-enabled.
The Party menu, Pokémon Summary screens, Bag, Pokédex and PC Boxes now use the game's original interfaces, centred on the bottom screen and adapted for direct touch control. Every original action remains accessible, and these screens run at 60 FPS on Old 3DS. -
New 3D BATTLE option (off by default, requires VOXEL 3D).
Battles can now take place directly in front of the voxel overworld. The game searches for suitable level terrain near the player and smoothly moves the camera from the field into the battle. -
SHOW FPS option.
The FPS counter is no longer permanently displayed. It can now be enabled from the bottom-screen OPTIONS menu and is disabled by default.
Voxel 3D improvements
Voxel 3D is still experimental. Expect visual issues and glitches, particularly around mountains, ledges and maps that have not yet been fully adapted.
-
New HD-2D-inspired rendering, including:
- optional tilt-shift depth blur with 3D BLUR;
- bloom;
- sunlit dust particles;
- richer natural lighting;
- sun rays;
- soft moving sunlight and shadow patterns;
- improved tree and terrain lighting.
-
More work has been done on the terrain and elevation of Route 104 and Route 105, including beaches, cliffs and connections between different height levels. These areas are still being refined and currently contain visual and terrain errors.
-
Reusable sea rocks and boulders are now modelled consistently wherever the same assets appear.
-
Improved environmental rendering:
- voxel fog banks;
- colder and darker cave lighting;
- translucent fog in classic 2D mode;
- water aligned with ground level;
- tall grass rendered and animated on its actual tile;
- Surf Pokémon and additional field sprites are now rendered;
- sprites correctly appear in front of stairs and ramps.
Performance
A large part of 0.2.0 is dedicated to making the game smoother on real hardware, especially Old 3DS.
- Assets can now be loaded ahead of time by a background worker.
- The sound mixer runs separately from the main game workload.
- Unchanged graphics layers avoid unnecessary processing.
- Voxel frame scheduling and chunk generation have been heavily reworked.
- Off-screen voxel geometry is culled using the camera frustum.
- Temporary lightweight chunks can fill missing terrain while full chunks are prepared.
- Animated tiles update only the regions that actually changed.
- New 3DS systems can run the game at 804 MHz with L2 cache enabled.
- Bottom-screen interfaces use partial redraws where possible instead of rebuilding the entire screen.
Faster builder
The builder has received a major optimisation pass.
A full build now takes approximately 6.5 minutes instead of 15–17 minutes, around 2.5× faster, while producing the same game data pack.
Installation and updates
Web Builder
0.2.0 introduces the infrastructure required by the new browser-based builder.
Releases now include:
Emerald3DS-WebPayload.zipweb-manifest.json
The voxel generators can run directly inside the web builder without requiring local Python or development tools.
Quick Update
The standalone files are now also published separately:
Emerald3DS.3dsxEmerald3DS.smdh
This allows future compatible updates to replace the executable without rebuilding the entire installation.
HOME Menu forwarder
An optional HOME Menu forwarder is now available:
Emerald3DS-Forwarder.cia
Install it once using FBI and Pokémon Emerald 3DS Dual Screen can be launched directly from the HOME Menu through Luma3DS.
The forwarder itself does not contain the game data. Updates can continue to use the Emerald3DS.3dsx stored on the SD card.
Debug logging
SD logging is now disabled during normal play.
To enable it, create:
sdmc:/3ds/emerald3ds/debug.txt
When enabled:
port.logcontains the current session;port-prev.logcontains the previous session.
This avoids unnecessary SD writes during normal gameplay.
Fixes
Classic 2D
- Fixed Surf, Fly and other field-move sequences leaving most of the overworld black.
- Fixed Match Call corrupting the overworld graphics during a call.
- Fixed the map name popup remaining partially visible at the bottom of the screen while disappearing.
- Fixed several window and sprite positioning issues, including items appearing outside their frames and the Pokémon Center healing machine's Poké Balls being incorrectly positioned.
- Fixed the starter selection screen appearing at the top-left of the top screen with an incorrect background. It is now centred correctly, with the meadow extended to the screen edges and Treecko's selection label rendered correctly.
Voxel 3D
- Fixed freezes after battles.
- Fixed voxel chunks occasionally stopping loading around areas such as Mauville.
- Fixed the voxel overworld unexpectedly falling back to 2D on Old 3DS.
- Fixed OPTIONS changes causing noticeable pauses while settings were written to the SD card.
- Fixed black gaps appearing near the edges of connected maps.
- Improved tall-grass and character positioning behaviour.

Alpha 0.1.2
Emerald 3Ds Dual Screen v0.1.2
This download does not contain the game. Download Emerald3DS-v0.1.2-Windows.zip below and follow the installation and update guide. You need your own dump of Pokémon Emerald (USA, Europe). Updating from 0.1 or 0.1.1 keeps your save; run the new builder again so the data pack matches this version.
New and improved
- PokéNav on the bottom screen, driven by touch: header, body and help bar laid out for the screen, taps go straight to the option or entry, and the Hoenn map scrolls smoothly.
- 3D slider: stereo depth on the intro and the title screen; on 2D screens, blended sprites and text windows keep their own depth.
- Battle transitions now play in both the classic 2D field and the voxel overworld, at full speed on Old 3DS.
- Voxel overworld:
- the world fades with the screen on warps and battle starts;
- characters drawn at their proper proportions, standing on their feet and meeting their shadow, with the walking bob kept;
- walls and mountain sides facing away from the sun are in shade, lit by the same sun as the cast shadows;
- newly modelled: Rustboro's gym (its statues stand in all eight gyms), Oldale's two houses, Mr Briney's cottage and the Pretty Petal flower shop;
- every mountain of the general tileset is drawn; Route 116's mountain has straight faces and one-level steps; stairs, lamps and Rustboro's railings stand again;
- Route 104's beach and sea are a level below the route, and Routes 105 and 106 follow them down.
- Intro, title and menus: the margins around the original picture are made from each screen's own art (Rayquaza stands on the bottom edge under a lit sky), and menu screens are centred.
- Smoother on Old 3DS: the title screen and palette fades no longer drop frames.
- New installation guide and bug report / feature request forms in Issues.
Fixes
- PokéNav tiles and palettes were wrong.
- With the 3D slider up, black screens came out blue, the save selection lost its backdrop and the intro's leaves scene slowed down.
- Voxel: sprites went black on their own during warps and battle starts.
- Voxel: cast shadows striped and came apart from the feet.
- Voxel: black gaps along the shores of recessed water (now a rim).
- Voxel: ledges sunk into a toothed trench and side ledges striped by the lighting.
- Voxel: Rustboro's lamps against walls did not stand.
Known limitations
- Most of the map and nearly all interiors are still shown flat in the voxel overworld.
- Only Pokémon Emerald (USA, Europe) is supported; the builder is packaged for Windows only.
Alpha 0.1.1
This download does NOT contain the game. You need your own dump of your own
Pokémon Emerald (USA, Europe) cartridge. The builder reads that ROM on this
computer and generates the game's data pack from it. The ROM is not uploaded,
copied or modified, and no Internet connection is needed.
What's new
- The voxel overworld is now optional and off by default. Turn it on with the new VOXEL 3D row in the bottom screen's OPTION screen.
- Voxel camera options: while VOXEL 3D is on, 3D ANGLE (34 to 46 degrees, default 40) and 3D ZOOM (90 to 120%, default 100%) adjust the camera.
- These settings are saved at once in
/3ds/emerald3ds/settings.txt, without saving the game.
Updating from 0.1
- Download
Emerald3DS-v0.1.1-Windows.zipand extract it. - Run
Emerald3DS-Builder.exeagain with your ROM and SD card, and press Install.
