NVDA For VS Code Version 21.0.0

What's new in this release:

  • Updated compatibility with NVDA 2021.1,
  • Fixed a bug around same line reading and navigation,
  • Removed states from the code completion list item to reduce verbosity.

Known issues:

  • The first character of the line is being announced after completion. It is a random behavior and is very likely connected to the way text is being retreived from the code text area,
  • The next line is being announced after deleting text that was previously selected. The possible reason can be the required selection change and caret movement.

NVDA For VS Code Version 20.1.0

This release improves intellisense and general editing in the following ways:

  • The 'Suggest' prefix is not being announced every time the intellisense popup is activated,
  • When switching editors by using Control+Tab for example, the focused line in the new editor is being read automatically,

Issues and ideas

After the completion item is inserted NVDA frequently repeats the first few characters of the line. It will be very likely improved if the add-on will be able to use caret events fired by the editor - what should be possible.

The next step will be introduction of settings that will allow for the following:

  • Switching on and off announcement of the 'Suggest' prefix unless the logic will be accepted into Visual Studio Code itself,
  • Specifying what will be announced after the code completion item gets inserted to the editor: nothing or the accepted item,
  • Speech dictionary rules for custom reading of different parts of code, such as not silencing opening/closing brackets when they are the only characters in the line.

Completion characters that allow to continue typing while the code completion popup is active do not fire contextual suggestions for the properties/methods and so on. Currently, the currently suggested item needs to be commited to the editor by using enter or tab key and then a dot will trigger the expected behavior.

Since the add-on is using very useful overrides from the NVDA's built-in module, there is no automatic switching to browse mode when for example previewing Markdown documents in HTML. Pressing insert+space will toggle the between forms and browse modes.

The branch has some conflicts with the master branch, which will be addressed in the next release.

This release improves the following areas:

  • Edit role for the editor text area is not announced on every focus change,
  • Announcements of editor states that were too verbose is silenced,
  • Intellisense completion popup is not announced as a treeview and its items as treeview items,
  • The name of the editor is not announced on every focus change.
  • To get the name of the currently opened file press: NVDA + Insert.

Some of those changes are fixes of a temporary nature, before the Visual Studio Code next release will incorporate many useful changes that improve development experience.
The best way to update the add-on due to some minor versionign change is to uninstall the existing add-on and install this release.

The code has gone through some refactoring. The add-on shall be considered stable and will follow semantic versioning scheme from now on.

NVDA For VS Code Version 20.0

This release contains fixes around text ranges and offsets used for better codecompletion. The feature prevents VS Code reading entire line from the beginning after every completion. Once the logic behind handling focus of the text editor and caret events gets sorted out, there are ways to make it better.

Important notes:

  • The add-on is primarly targetting NVDA 2019.3 or newer, but has no specific code that should prevent it from running under 2019.1 upto 2019.2.1
  • Do keep in mind that you need to place focus on the code editor, which is a textarea found on websites or web e-mail clients.
  • If NVDA will be too verbose while reading out code completion, such as announcing items as treeviews - switch to desktop and place focus back inside the editor or use NVDA-key+Space combination.
  • If you scroll back to a previous line and then place the cursor at the end of it the last inserted item or occasionally the entire line will get read when in fact you will move to a new line.
  • I switched to year.number numbering scheme.
  • While working on those fixes I started working on fixes to the VS Code itself.
