The first tagged release of Capture Kit.

What's new since 0.2.0

  • Record a clip (Cmd+Shift+8). Records a few seconds of the tab and keeps the frames where something changed, on one sheet with timestamps. The console and network timeline runs alongside it. About 38 frames are sampled per 5 s clip. (NOBC-158)
  • Clips crop to what moved. When only part of the page changes, the sheet shows just that part at real size, so text and fine detail stay readable. (NOBC-159)
  • Tall pages come back whole. Pages past Chrome's 32,767 px single-image limit are no longer cut off. Any page taller than about two screens is also saved as full-size, screen-sized slices in a _slices folder, listed in the report. (NOBC-161)
  • Errors point at real files. Console errors in reports are mapped back through source maps to the original file and line. (NOBC-153)
  • Source maps can't stall a capture. The time limit now covers the whole download, and oversized maps are skipped. (NOBC-160)

Install

  1. Unzip capture-kit-v0.3.0.zip.
  2. Open chrome://extensions and turn on Developer mode.
  3. Click "Load unpacked" and pick the unzipped folder. If an older version is already loaded, remove it first or reload it from the new folder.

The new tabCapture and offscreen permissions are for clip recording.

Known limits

  • A page or agent can only start a clip in a tab after someone has pressed the shortcut or clicked the icon in that tab. This is a Chrome rule.
  • On the Downloads path each slice is its own download. Choosing an output folder avoids this.
