Capture Kit 0.4.2

Every way of starting a capture now captures the tab you acted on.

0.4.1 fixed captures fired by a page (how AI agents drive Capture Kit). This release finishes the job:

  • Toolbar icon, keyboard shortcuts, right-click "Record clip": use the tab Chrome says you acted in, instead of guessing "the tab in front of you".
  • The panel window (opened when the popup can't open): captures the window it was opened from. Before, every capture from it failed with "This tab has no capturable page."

Install: download capture-kit-v0.4.2.zip, unzip it, then Load unpacked at chrome://extensions. Full notes in #22.

Capture Kit 0.4.1

Two fixes.

App shells no longer capture blank. Pages like the Google Cloud console, which pin their main area inside the window, came back as a header over an empty page. They now capture in full. If a page ever would still come out hidden, Capture Kit falls back to a normal screenshot and the report says so.

Page-fired captures now capture the page that asked. When an AI agent fired a capture from a page in a window you weren't using, Capture Kit photographed the tab you had in front of you instead. If you use the in-page trigger, update.

Install: download capture-kit-v0.4.1.zip, unzip it, then Load unpacked at chrome://extensions. Full notes in #21.

Capture Kit 0.4.0

Capture Kit is ready for everyone, not just its author.

What's new since 0.3.0

  • Choose which sites can trigger a capture. Settings → Automation now offers Off, Allowed sites or Any page. In Allowed sites mode, localhost and 127.0.0.1 are pre-filled, so an agent driving your dev server works without opening every site. If you had the old switch on, you're moved to Any page, which is what that switch did.
  • Tighter slices. Empty side margins are trimmed off tall-page slices, so the text an assistant sees is bigger. The report says which columns each slice shows.
  • A quieter Downloads bar. On the Downloads path, Chrome's download bubble stays hidden while a tall page's slices are saved.
  • Getting-started page. It opens once on install and shows your actual shortcuts and the two settings that matter for AI agents.
  • New docs: a rewritten README, a privacy policy (PRIVACY.md), every permission explained (PERMISSIONS.md), and an MIT license.

Install

  1. Unzip capture-kit-v0.4.0.zip.
  2. Open chrome://extensions and turn on Developer mode.
  3. Click "Load unpacked" and pick the unzipped folder. If an older version is loaded, remove it first or reload it from the new folder.

The new downloads.ui permission adds no new warning. Chrome shows the same "Manage your downloads" line as before.

Known limits

  • A page or agent can only start a clip in a tab after someone has pressed the shortcut or clicked the icon in that tab. This is a Chrome rule.

Built from main 3680641 (PR #20, CI verify run 117513709359 on its final commit). 188 unit tests passed.

Capture Kit 0.3.0

The first tagged release of Capture Kit.

What's new since 0.2.0

  • Record a clip (Cmd+Shift+8). Records a few seconds of the tab and keeps the frames where something changed, on one sheet with timestamps. The console and network timeline runs alongside it. About 38 frames are sampled per 5 s clip. (NOBC-158)
  • Clips crop to what moved. When only part of the page changes, the sheet shows just that part at real size, so text and fine detail stay readable. (NOBC-159)
  • Tall pages come back whole. Pages past Chrome's 32,767 px single-image limit are no longer cut off. Any page taller than about two screens is also saved as full-size, screen-sized slices in a _slices folder, listed in the report. (NOBC-161)
  • Errors point at real files. Console errors in reports are mapped back through source maps to the original file and line. (NOBC-153)
  • Source maps can't stall a capture. The time limit now covers the whole download, and oversized maps are skipped. (NOBC-160)

Install

  1. Unzip capture-kit-v0.3.0.zip.
  2. Open chrome://extensions and turn on Developer mode.
  3. Click "Load unpacked" and pick the unzipped folder. If an older version is already loaded, remove it first or reload it from the new folder.

The new tabCapture and offscreen permissions are for clip recording.

Known limits

  • A page or agent can only start a clip in a tab after someone has pressed the shortcut or clicked the icon in that tab. This is a Chrome rule.
  • On the Downloads path each slice is its own download. Choosing an output folder avoids this.

Built from main b15d088. CI verify run 117422749992. 169 unit tests passed.
