OnAir 0.2.3

The biggest release so far: about 30 new modes, a spectrum explorer and a sweeping spectrum analyser, cell tower maps, Discord status, and many fixes reported by the community. Thank you to everyone who sent recordings, bug reports and pull requests.

New modes

  • Amateur radio: FT8, FT4, FT2 and WSPR (with band buttons for the common bands), PSK31, JS8Call, CW (Morse), M17, D-STAR, LoRa APRS
  • Two-way radio: NXDN, dPMR / PMR446 (channel 1-16 presets and a scan of all 16)
  • Aviation: airband AM, VDL Mode 2, HFDL, VOR and ILS, ADS-B Comm-B winds and weather, Mode S uplink (1030 MHz interrogations, TCAS coordination)
  • Satellites and navigation: Orbcomm (with satellite positions), Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou (B1I and BeiDou-3), QZSS and SBAS in the GNSS screen
  • Cellular and rail: cell towers (LTE broadcast information) and GSM-R (#41, thanks @F5OEO)
  • TV: DVB-C (cable), FM video for analog FPV links and analog TV up to 6 GHz (#15, #36, thanks @F5OEO)
  • Utility: ISM sensors (433/868 MHz)
  • Each protocol now has its own entry in the mode list. The groups fold, and a search box finds any mode.

New tools

  • Spectrum explorer: look around without a decoder. It has band presets, including a Ku-band LNB IF preset (739-2150 MHz) and an LNB offset for finding DVB-S2.
  • Spectrum analyser: a sweeping wideband analyser in the style of hackrf-spectrum-analyzer, using the HackRF's native sweep.
  • Cell tower map: towers you receive are placed on the map through OpenCelliD. Add your free API key (the "?" button explains how). A tower the database is missing is placed from another sector of the same site.
  • Discord status (opt-in): View > Show in Discord shows the mode and frequency on your profile. The frequency can be hidden.
  • Listen: RTTY, SSTV, FT8/FT4/FT2/WSPR, PSK31 and JS8Call can play their audio.
  • Pop-out video window, and full screen on the monitor the window is on (#29).
  • Channel width on every spectrum, automatic or manual (#27, thanks @A2ureIm4la).
  • Iridium bursts can be saved for iridium-toolkit.
  • POCSAG messages can be read as auto, by function, alpha or numeric.

Radios

  • PlutoSDR: network boards found, Tezuka firmware detected, CS8/CS16 offered, and the native 64/7 Msps used for 8 MHz DVB-T/T2 (#32, #33, thanks @F5OEO). USB Plutos are found when libiio cannot scan the network, and run fast enough for DVB-T/T2.
  • SDRplay RSPduo opens on tuner 2 (#31).
  • LimeSDR-USB is found through a vendor LimeSuite on Windows (#40).
  • The sample rate can be chosen per mode, and the bias-tee is remembered per mode and per radio.
  • DVB-S/S2 tunes from 30 MHz (#30).
  • A faster resampler with AVX2 (#34, thanks @F5OEO).

Fixes

  • FM: no longer jumps to a stronger station nearby with a live radio.
  • DTMB: keeps lock through lost samples, and no longer crashes on them (#37, #38).
  • DVB-C:
    • The symbol rate is found when the neighbouring cable channels or the HackRF DC spike are in the input.
    • A symbol rate you set yourself is kept.
  • DVB-T/T2: recover quickly after lost samples.
  • Cell scan:
    • Finds every cell in the band, not just one.
    • Decodes weaker cells under stronger ones (interference cancellation).
  • Crashes fixed:
    • typing a manual sample rate (Windows assertion)
    • hovering the lost-samples indicator
    • closing the app
    • stopping an Airspy HF+
    • unplugging a monitor on Wayland
    • the Navtex setting (#42)
  • Display:
    • The status lights have tooltips that fit every mode.
    • Accented names decode correctly.
  • Build instructions no longer start unlimited compile jobs, which could freeze a Linux machine (#43).

Voice codecs

OnAir does not ship patented voice codecs. D-STAR, NXDN, dPMR, DMR and others play voice with a codec you install yourself. See the "?" next to each mode's sound and docs/CODECS.md.
