Accessibility

PDF Reader Pro aims to be usable with a screen reader, large text and other Android accessibility settings. This page lists what is supported, what isn't yet, and how to report a problem.

Most of the support below arrives in the first release after 2.6.0; version 2.6.0 and earlier read many icons as "Decorative image".

Coverage

Area Status Details
TalkBack labels ✅ Supported Every button and icon has a label. Decorative icons are skipped.
Switches and checkboxes ✅ Supported Each settings, reader and tool option is one item that says its name and state, for example "Keep Screen On, switch, on". The whole row is tappable.
Selected options ✅ Supported Zoom, reading theme, view mode, sort order, tabs and tool choices say which one is selected. Color swatches are read by name.
Headings ✅ Supported Section titles are headings. In TalkBack, choose Headings in the reading controls and swipe up or down to jump between sections.
Live updates ✅ Supported Search results ("3 of 12"), tool progress and "done" messages are announced as they change.
Reading PDFs ✅ Supported The text and links in a PDF can be read by TalkBack, page by page.
Scanned PDFs ❌ Not possible A PDF made of images has no text to read. Use a PDF with a text layer, or run it through OCR first.
Font size ✅ Supported The app's text follows your phone's font size setting. Zoom in the reader to make the page larger.
Dark and high-contrast reading ✅ Supported Light, Dark, Sepia and Black reading themes, plus Dark and Black (AMOLED) app themes.
Page scrubber ⚠️ Partial Dragging is a gesture; tap its thumb ("Page 5 of 9") to open Jump to Page instead.
Reordering pages ⚠️ Partial Reorder Pages is drag only.
Switch Access and keyboards ❔ Not tested Should work for buttons and lists, but hasn't been checked yet.

Tips for TalkBack users

  • Turn pages: swipe with two fingers in the reader, or use Jump to Page from the page scrubber or the reader's menu.
  • Find text: use the search button in the reader; the result count is read after each search and when moving between results.
  • Options panels: the reader's Zoom, Display and View Options panels list their options as selectable items, with the current one announced as selected.

Reporting a problem

Tell us in the accessibility discussion or open an issue. Please include:

  • the screen and the button or option,
  • what TalkBack (or your setting) said or did, and what you expected,
  • your Android version and phone.

For contributors

  • Give icon-only buttons a contentDescription. Use null for icons next to text that already says the same thing.
  • For a row with a switch or checkbox, put toggleable(role = Role.Switch) (or Role.Checkbox) on the row and pass onCheckedChange = null to the control.
  • Mark single-choice options with semantics { selected = ... } and section titles with semantics { heading() }.
  • Don't wrap a whole screen in clickable; it merges everything into one TalkBack item. Use pointerInput { detectTapGestures { } } for "tap outside" handlers.
