The first public release of Borealis, a free and open-source D&D 5e character builder for macOS, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android, with 2014 (SRD 5.1) and 2024 (SRD 5.2.1) rules.

First launch

These builds are not code-signed yet, so your system warns you once.

  • macOS: right-click Borealis in Applications and choose Open, then confirm.
  • Windows: in the SmartScreen dialog choose More info, then Run anyway.
  • AppImage: mark it executable (chmod +x) and open it.
  • Android: open the APK; Android asks once to allow installs from that source.

What's in 1.0.0

  • Build characters step by step: race or species, class, background, ability scores, proficiencies, feats and gear, levels 1 to 20, multiclassing.
  • Spellcasting for every caster, including a wizard's spellbook and daily preparation.
  • Printable PDF character sheets: colour or ink-saving, fillable or flattened, Letter or A4, with spell pages and cards.
  • Import Aurora Builder XML content and .dnd5e characters, your own homebrew, and your own local 5etools data. Every import shows a preview first.
  • An optional assistant that runs through a command-line tool you already have, off by default and desktop only.
  • No account, no telemetry. Characters are plain files on your device.

Verify downloads with SHA256SUMS.txt. The Android APK is signed with this certificate (SHA-256):
