@github-actions github-actions released this 15 Oct 17:50

Borealis 1.0.1 is a small update: Aurora index files now install, the app tells you when a new version is out, and it keeps local log files to help track down problems.

Download for your platform at borealisbuilder.com, or pick a file below.

Platform File
macOS (Apple silicon) Borealis_1.0.1_aarch64.dmg
Windows (x64) Borealis_1.0.1_x64-setup.exe
Linux (x86_64), any distribution Borealis_1.0.1_amd64.AppImage
Debian / Ubuntu Borealis_1.0.1_amd64.deb
Fedora / openSUSE Borealis-1.0.1-1.x86_64.rpm
Android (64-bit ARM), sideload Borealis_1.0.1_arm64.apk

Installing 1.0.1 over 1.0.0 keeps your characters, content and settings. The first-launch steps from 1.0.0 still apply.

What's new in 1.0.1

  • Aurora index files install. Adding an Aurora .index file under Additional content > Index files now downloads its content, including nested index files. A GitHub page link (github.com/.../blob/...) works too; it is turned into the raw file address for you. Adding an index starts its first download right away.
  • Clear failure messages. If an index cannot be downloaded, Borealis says which one and why (for example, that an address is a web page, not an index file). It no longer reports "up to date" when something failed.
  • New-version notice. At startup Borealis asks GitHub for the latest version number and shows a small bar when a newer one is available, with a Download button that opens the download page in your browser. Nothing about you or your characters is sent. Turn it off with Borealis Settings > General > Check for new versions of Borealis; Check now in the same place checks by hand.
  • Local log files. Borealis now keeps daily log files of what it did (start-up, index updates, imports, errors) so problems can be tracked down. They stay on your device and are never sent anywhere. They hold no character, notes or source content, and your home folder is shortened to ~. The newest five days are kept. Find them with Application Settings > Data files > Open logs folder (on phones, Share logs).

App Store and Google Play builds are coming later.

First launch

These builds are not code-signed yet, so your system warns you once.

  • macOS: right-click Borealis in Applications and choose Open, then confirm.
  • Windows: in the SmartScreen dialog choose More info, then Run anyway.
  • AppImage: mark it executable (chmod +x) and open it.
  • Android: open the APK; Android asks once to allow installs from that source.

What's in 1.0.0

  • Build characters step by step: race or species, class, background, ability scores, proficiencies, feats and gear, levels 1 to 20, multiclassing.
  • Spellcasting for every caster, including a wizard's spellbook and daily preparation.
  • Printable PDF character sheets: colour or ink-saving, fillable or flattened, Letter or A4, with spell pages and cards.
  • Import Aurora Builder XML content and .dnd5e characters, your own homebrew, and your own local 5etools data. Every import shows a preview first.
  • An optional assistant that runs through a command-line tool you already have, off by default and desktop only.
  • No account, no telemetry. Characters are plain files on your device.
