Syncthing

If you are looking for an option to sync settings/configuration across multiple devices then syncthing is a great option. This page describes how to install and run it on each platform 240-MP supports.

On a RaspberryPi

Step 1: Install Syncthing via APT

The cleanest method on the Pi is the official Syncthing APT repository, it gives you automatic updates via apt and ships the ready-made systemd service along with it.

First add the signing key:

sudo mkdir -p /etc/apt/keyrings
sudo curl -L -o /etc/apt/keyrings/syncthing-archive-keyring.gpg https://syncthing.net/release-key.gpg

Then add the repository (stable v2 channel):

echo "deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/syncthing-archive-keyring.gpg] https://apt.syncthing.net/ syncthing stable-v2" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/syncthing.list

Update the package list and install Syncthing:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y syncthing

Check the installation:

syncthing --version

Step 2: Run Syncthing as a systemd service

To enable Syncthing to run in the background and start automatically after a reboot, use the bundled systemd service.

Important

Remember to replace pi in the commands below with your actual username

sudo systemctl enable syncthing@pi.service
sudo systemctl start syncthing@pi.service

Check the status:

sudo systemctl status syncthing@pi.service

You should see Active: active (running). On first start Syncthing automatically creates its configuration, the keys and your device ID.

Step 3: Access the web interface (and secure it)

Syncthing is operated entirely through a web interface that, by default, is only reachable locally on the Pi at 127.0.0.1:8384. On a headless Pi (no screen), the most secure way to reach it is via an SSH tunnel.

Run this command on your PC/laptop (replace [YOUR PI's IP ADDRESS] with the IP address of your Pi):

ssh -L 8384:127.0.0.1:8384 pi@[YOUR PI's IP ADDRESS]

As long as the SSH connection is open, open http://localhost:8384 in your browser to see your Pi’s Syncthing interface.

Secure the GUI and expose it on the network: In the web interface, go to Actions → Settings → GUI (top right) and set:

  • a GUI username and password (mandatory before you open the interface on the network)
  • optionally the GUI listen address to 0.0.0.0:8384, so you can then access it directly from your home network via http://:8384 without an SSH tunnel

Set the password first, then switch to 0.0.0.0

Once that is done Syncthing is fully set up on your Raspberry Pi and it will automatically start on each boot. Please see https://raspberry.tips/en/raspberrypi-einsteiger/raspberry-pi-syncthing-setup for additional tips on how to set up a share and common troubleshooting tips.
