Egg Farm System (EFS) is an information system for managing egg farm. It is specially designed for our friend's requirements.

From technical perspective, EFS is a desktop client application which connects to database either via web service or direct access. The UI layer is built with WPF, and the service side is Web API hosted with windows service.

Motivation

The reasons we build EFS and make it open source are:

  • Github is a nice platform for collaboration and it is free for open source.
EFS is not a commercial and cutting edge application. We also don't use commercial components, so why we need to pay for private repository :)
  • To show some love for WPF and desktop application
We haven't developed desktop application for a really long time.
Web application is getting more popularity so it has become our daily jobs. We believe developing different things in our spare time will remind us why we love coding.
As for WPF, it was the first desktop API which really attracted our attention. Back in 2007, WPF and XAML were the shiny things. Although WinRT is promoted as first class API in Windows 8, WPF is more powerful and suitable to our needs. Our target users are not only Windows 8 computers.
Qt is good alternative though but we are more familiar with .NET.

Limitation

This application is not intended to run with hundreds of concurrent users out of the box.
In our case there wont be that many users, so we use YAGNI approach here.
If scalability is the concern, the architecture of service side need to be changed with message oriented architecture, usually with message queue.
