Backport of #68975 to
v3-3-test.The original merged to
mainon 2026-07-22 without abackport-to-v3-3-testlabel, so the backport bot never picked it up and the change is absent from the
3.3 line. Cherry-picked with
-x; applies cleanly with no conflicts and theoriginal author's attribution preserved.
Verified on the branch: the
_mask_and_deserialize_variablehelper introduced bythe original is present, and the diff against
v3-3-testis exactly the two filesthe original touched.
