Pinyon Shift 0.5.0

Native builds for Linux, the Steam Deck and Apple silicon Macs, your own DLC
and the optional title update v4 build, HDR output, your own music and radio
stations, and updates from inside the launcher.

Each launcher still builds the game on your machine from your own disc; none
of the downloads contains the game. The site's Features
page shows what each platform supports.

New platforms

  • Linux and the Steam Deck, natively rather than through Proton.
    Download PinyonShift-Launcher-linux-x86_64.tar.gz, choose your disc
image and Verify and build, then Add to Steam to play from Game
Mode. The race and free roam hold 60 fps at 1x under the Deck's default
    15 W limit. On Linux, F6 > GRAPHICS > SCENE SHADING > COARSE saves
about 8 % of the Deck's GPU frame for a slightly softer image. See
    Linux and Steam Deck.
  • macOS on Apple silicon (M1 or newer, macOS 13 or newer). Vulkan runs
on Metal through MoltenVK, which the build includes. Download
PinyonShift-Launcher-macos-arm64.zip; the app is not notarized, so
approve its first start in System Settings > Privacy & Security. Free
roam runs at a median of about 105 fps at 1x on an M4 Pro. See
    macOS.
  • Android (alpha, for developers) installs over Wi-Fi: the Windows
launcher's Android > Share on Wi-Fi shows a QR code and a pairing
code, and the app copies the game files, title update, DLC and optionally
your save from the PC. USB debugging is no longer needed. The app id is now
    studio.deimos.pinyonshift; python tools/pinyon.py android migrate
moves an earlier install's saves and files. See Android.

New

  • DLC from your own packages. The launcher's DLC panel verifies
each Xbox 360 package against a catalog of 21 Forza Horizon packages
and imports it. The monthly car packs are qualified; Horizon Rally plays
from F6 on the base build. Windows only for now.
  • Title update v4 build (optional). Built from your disc and your own
copy of the update, it runs the original Horizon Rally and the 1000 Club
car challenges offline. A save written by it can't go back to the base
build; the launcher backs the save up first. Windows and Android.
  • HDR output on HDR displays (F6 > DISPLAY > HDR), with HDR PAPER
WHITE, HDR HIGHLIGHTS, a calibration screen and an SDR and HDR side by
side comparison. It switches without a restart.
  • Your music. F6 > AUDIO > YOUR MUSIC plays your MP3 and WAV files
from the music folder once the festival has loaded, silencing the radio
as an Xbox 360 dashboard soundtrack did. F9 skips.
  • Custom radio stations. The launcher's Radio panel turns your music
into up to three stations, each with its own name, logo and songs, in place
of Bass Arena, Pulse or Rocks. It needs FFmpeg.
  • Immersive camera (optional, F6 > DISPLAY > IMMERSIVE CAMERA):
G-forces, lean into corners, speed shake and head motion, with presets and
    separate amounts, applied at once.
  • Update from the launcher. Update to downloads the newer
release, checks its SHA-256, replaces the launcher and restarts, keeping
saves, settings and game files. This is the first release with it, so
this update is still a manual download.
  • Controls. Keyboard driving on WASD by default, keys rebound in F6 >
    CONTROLS
, controllers mapped in game (MAP CONTROLLER), and a
controller chord, Back + Start, that opens the settings.
  • Presets for smaller PCs. New installs start at Low-spec 60;
Balanced 40 paces evenly at a third of 120's CPU work. The launcher
recommends a preset for your PC.
  • The Forza Horizon XE mod installs from your own ModDB downloads in
every launcher, plays its own save and leaves yours alone. Mods can now
keep your save when they only change looks or sound.
  • Saves from Xenia import under their profile with
    tools/import-xenia-save.ps1.
  • Extracted game folders are accepted when every file matches the
    supported disc.

Fixed

  • Overexposed mornings above 1x: the screen was too bright until about
noon in game at 2x and up (#444).
  • A user folder with accents or other non-ASCII characters, such as
C:\Users\Júnior, closed the game at once (#436).
  • Custom Upgrade crashed after loading a saved car.
  • A lost graphics device now shows an explanation instead of the game
vanishing, and a GPU without Vulkan 1.3 is explained before a build.
  • Setup checks free space, the download sites, the install path, the
Visual Studio installation and the Windows SDK before building, and
resumes after a restart Visual Studio asks for.
  • Two crashes in the game's own object handling: a dispatch through freed
objects and an append into a corrupt list.
  • The launchers' Logs link opens the game's own log once it has run
    (#424).

Faster

  • Quad lists become triangle lists on every platform: about 3 % of the
GPU's frame at 2x on an RTX 4080 and 5 % on an M4 Pro.
  • TEXTURE GAMMA > FAST on desktop saves about 8 % of the GPU's frame on
a Mac, for slightly darker terrain and foliage.
  • Cheaper draw bindings and system constants on the GPU recorder thread.

Known limitations

  • DLC import and the title update build are Windows only (Android gets them
from the PC); Linux and macOS don't have them yet.
  • The Steam Deck's settings menu didn't open for one player from the pause
menu (#429). This build logs why; Back + Start opens it too.
  • AMD and Intel GPUs on PCs are not qualified yet; the Steam Deck is.
    Racing wheels aren't supported (#337).
  • The immersive camera isn't available on Android or the v4 build.
