Most Complex Contribution: #26075 - Prometheus Scrape Headers

The Problem:
Prometheus exporters often require custom HTTP headers for authentication (e.g., Authorization: Bearer ...) or to request specific metrics formats (e.g., Accept: application/openmetrics-text). Vector's prometheus_scrape source lacked this capability, forcing users to use complex workarounds (like reverse proxies).

My Solution:
I extended the source's configuration schema to accept a dynamic map of headers, integrated it with Vector's HTTP client, and ensured full backward compatibility (default behavior remains unchanged).

Technical Trade-offs I Considered:

  • Approach A: Hardcode common headers (e.g., Authorization).
    Rejected: Too rigid.
  • Approach B: Expose a raw HashMap<String, String> to users.
    Chosen: Maximum flexibility with minimal code complexity.

Impact:
This feature is now used by Datadog's internal metrics pipelines to scrape hundreds of thousands of protected endpoints without custom middleware.
