1.7.7 — 2026-09-19

New

  • Build your own gradients. The + in the Gradients list now opens a gradient editor instead of a file picker. Pick linear or radial, set the angle, and add as many colour stops as you like — drag them along the ramp, or type exact positions and hex values. Saved gradients sit alongside the built-in ones.
  • Grain for your gradients. A Noise slider lays a fine film grain over the gradient, which also smooths the faint banding wide gradients can show.
  • Emoji stickers. A new Sticker tool stamps emoji onto a screenshot. Pick one from the Tools list, click anywhere to place it, then drag to move or drag a corner to resize. Stickers behave like any other annotation and export with the image.
  • Drag pages between windows. Drag a thumbnail out of one editor window and drop it into another to copy the page; hold ⌥ while dropping to move it instead. ⌘-click and ⇧-click to take several at once. Crop, rotation, adjustments and annotations come along.
  • Custom Backgrounds. Your own background images now have a category of their own, next to Gradients and Solid Colors, with its own + for adding more. Everything you had already added is still there.
  • Save a PDF page as an image. Save As on a PDF now offers PNG, JPEG, HEIC and the rest. PDF writes the whole document; an image format writes the current page at the resolution of the bitmap inside it, so a 300 DPI scan exports at 300 DPI rather than 72.

Fixed

  • Annotated PDFs lost their table of contents. Links and document details came through fine, so it was easy to miss. The cause was a PDFKit change in macOS 27, not SimplShot; contents entries now survive.
  • The Templates menu claimed a template was applied even with no background on the image. It now reads None, and choosing None removes the background and watermark while keeping padding and corners.
  • Text ran outside its bubble while editing if you had set the bubble's width by hand. The editor now wraps exactly as the finished bubble does.
  • The Noise slider in Edit mode washed pictures out instead of graining them. Grain is now blended in properly, leaving tones and colours alone and falling strongest through the midtones.

1.7.6

Organise PDF pages

The thumbnail strip can now add, delete and reorder pages.

  • Delete — the × on a thumbnail removes the page from the document, not just from the strip.
  • Reorder — drag thumbnails to reorder the document itself.
  • Add — drop a PDF or image onto the strip, or use the Add Pages tile. A PDF adds all its pages; an image becomes one page.

Every page change is undoable with ⌘Z, and nothing touches the file on disk until you save.

Saving a PDF keeps its structure

Saving used to discard the table of contents, hyperlinks and document metadata. A document you only reorganised is now saved byte-for-byte intact; with annotations, the outline, links and metadata are carried across instead of dropped.

Hide the menu bar icon

Settings › General can take SimplShot's icon out of the menu bar for keyboard-driven workflows — open the app from Spotlight to bring the menu back. Check for Updates now also sits in Settings › About. Suggested by Matt Ormianek.

Fixes

  • Better template previews — Settings › Template previews closer to what it exports: Auto keeps padding even, ratio presets show the right canvas shape, and watermarks appear nearer their exported size.
  • Adding an HDR photo to a PDF produced a blank page. iPhone HDR photos decode as 10-bit, which PDFKit accepts but cannot embed. Images are now converted to 8-bit colour first.

1.7.5

• Improved Crop controls
• Bug fixes

1.7.4

@atlemo atlemo released this 20 Aug 15:21

• New: Capture History — open it from the menu bar to see your last 10 captures and edited files as a film strip. Hover a thumbnail and click Restore to reopen an image with every annotation still editable.
• Alignment now keeps padding even — aligning to an edge puts the screenshot flush against it while the other sides keep their exact padding, instead of doubling the gap on the opposite side.
• Pixelation now exports exactly as previewed — saved and copied images use the same soft mosaic blocks you see in the editor.
• SimplShot uses much less memory — closed editing sessions are kept compressed in the background, so the app stays fast even after a long day of captures.

1.7.3

Extra release to fix "Global ⌘C hotkey hijacks Copy in every app" issue.

1.7.2

@atlemo atlemo released this 13 Aug 16:35

Fixing "Customizable Save & Copy Shortcut"- #6
Adding German/Deutsch language as well.

1.7.1

@atlemo atlemo released this 11 Aug 14:06

• New languages supported: French, Japanese, Russian and Chinese (Simplified)
• New print options — the print dialog now has Rotation and Scale controls. Rotation can turn the page 90° clockwise or counterclockwise, and “Auto (fit page)” rotates only when that fills the paper better, so a landscape screenshot prints large on a portrait page without any fiddling. Scale offers 25 % to 200 %, with 100 % meaning fit to page.
• Bug fixes and improvements

1.7.0

@atlemo atlemo released this 07 Jul 18:38

Bendable arrows (curved arrow + middle-dot handle)
New Double arrow style
Gritty hand-drawn Sketch arrows
New Angle tool (protractor)
More image formats supported, including PSD

1.6.9

@atlemo atlemo released this 29 Jun 15:48

• Straighten tool — while cropping, drag the new Straighten slider to level a tilted screenshot in 1° steps. The crop tightens automatically so you never get blank corners, and an alignment grid appears while you adjust to help you line things up.
• Redesigned Edit mode — photo adjustments are now organised into tidy, collapsible Light, Color and Detail sections, so the panel is much easier to scan.
• New Tint control under Color, alongside Temperature, for finer colour correction.
• Crop, Rotate and Resize now sit together in Edit mode for a clearer, more consistent editing workflow.

Apply Template to All Open Images
A new toggle below the padding and effects section lets you mirror the active image's background, padding, corner radius, shadow, alignment, and aspect ratio across all open images at once. Annotations automatically shift as each image updates. Watermark and photo adjustments remain independent per image.

PDF Zoom to Fit Window
PDF pages now scale up to fill the editor window when you click "Fit to Size." This works for multi-page PDFs and preserves vector sharpness at any zoom level. Raster images continue to use the true-size cap to avoid pixelation.

Rounded Corners & Shadow for No-Background Images
Screenshots without a background now display with rounded corners and drop shadow in the editor, matching the appearance of full-page PDF views. This gives consistent visual feedback for all image types.

Thumbnail Auto-Refresh
Active image thumbnails update instantly as you adjust template properties (padding, wallpaper, corners, shadow, etc.), so the sidebar always reflects your current edits.
