- An unplugged disk is no longer mistaken for a permission problem.
- A folder that was moved or renamed is reported as not found.

Fouine 1.0.1
Defaults changed. Nothing else moves: same index format, same command line, same MCP server.
Changed
- Images, audio and video files, and what is said in them, are now indexed by default. The three boxes of Settings ▸ Indexing ("Index images", "Index audio and video files", "Also write down what is said in them") start ticked. Untick the second one if a watched folder is a music library rather than a set of documents. A box you set yourself keeps its value; a box you never touched takes the new default.
- "Also prepare search by meaning in the background" is now off by default. Preparing search by meaning stays a deliberate choice: tick the box, or click "Prepare search by meaning…" in the sidebar.
Update: Fouine ▸ Check for updates… from 1.0.0, or open Fouine-1.0.1.dmg and drag Fouine onto Applications. Product page: https://basedpolymer.eu/fouine — guide for assistants: https://basedpolymer.eu/fouine/mcp

Fouine 1.0.0
First public version. Fouine indexes the documents in the folders you choose and searches them, on your Mac, without sending anything anywhere.
What it does
- Full-text search across your documents, page by page, with the folder, the file type, the language, the year and the origin of the text as facets. Every result says why it was found.
- Search that tolerates typos, which matters on scanned pages.
- Search by meaning, with an optional 220 MB model downloaded on request, combined with full-text search.
- Text recognition for scanned pages, on the Mac, with the languages you pick.
- Around 150 file formats: PDF, EPUB, Office and iWork documents, Markdown, e-mail, comics, notebooks, images, audio and video (transcribed), Apple Notes, Bear and Anki as sources.
- A background agent that keeps the index up to date, and a command line (
fouine) that shares it. - An MCP server (
fouine mcp --stdio), read-only, so an assistant such as Claude, Codex, Cursor or Antigravity can search the index and read a page with citations.fouine mcp installconfigures the clients in one command; a.mcpbextension installs into Claude Desktop with a double-click. - Fouine's documents in Spotlight, three Shortcuts actions, and a preview that quotes: a
fouine://link reopens a document at the right page. - English and French, automatic updates (off by default), a 30-day trial with everything switched on.
Privacy: no document, no search and no usage data leaves your Mac. The four outgoing connections, and how to check them yourself: https://basedpolymer.eu/fouine/privacy
