Upgrading keys to 256 bits will protect the HMAC up to 128 bits of Quantum Resistance. The HMAC is the message bus for the Bitcoin Protocol it can easily be upgraded without any issues for the Blockchain. The HMAC helps prevent Man-in-the-Middle attacks. And on the fly attacks against live transactions and the blockchain itself!
