Backups and Restore
| Device | Content | File |
|---|---|---|
| Tasmota | the complete configuration (like Backup Configuration in the Tasmota interface) | .dmp |
| WLED |
cfg.json (settings) and presets.json (presets), packed together |
.zip |
Files are stored in the data folder under backups/<device name>/, e.g.:
backups/Attic/Attic-2026-09-19_03-12-45-v15.6.0(release-tasmota).dmp
Date and time in the name follow Settings → Timezone; after them comes the firmware version at the time of the backup.
- Automatically: every 15 minutes the app checks which devices have a last backup older than the backup interval (default 24 hours) and backs up exactly those.
- With a click: Backup in a device row or Backup all above the list.
- Before every firmware update – always, without exception (→ Firmware Updates).
A failed backup is written to the event log and – if configured – sent as a notification.
Under Settings → Backups:
-
Keep max backups / device – keep only the newest n (
0= unlimited). -
Delete older than days – remove older ones automatically (
0= never).
Cleanup runs right after each new backup of that device. Both limits can be combined.
In the device list, click the "… Backups" link under Last backup. The list shows date, firmware version and size; Download saves the file to your computer.
In the backup list click Restore next to the backup you want and confirm. The app uploads the file to the device, the device applies the configuration and restarts.
If the device did not accept the file (e.g. wrong file or no space), the app reports an error. Tasmota itself answers the same way in both cases, so the app checks the response page.
Caution
Only restore a backup to the same device. The configuration includes the GPIO template, WiFi credentials and the device name – on a different device this can lead to wrongly switched outputs or duplicate names.
You can also upload a downloaded .dmp directly in the Tasmota interface: Configuration → Restore Configuration.
There is no one-click restore for WLED. Unzip the .zip and upload cfg.json or presets.json in the WLED interface under Config → Security & Updates → Backup & Restore (Restore configuration or Restore presets).
