Getting Started
Open http://<server-ip>:8259 and log in with the user and password you set during installation. Switch the interface language under Settings → Language (German/English).
There are three ways. All of them talk to the device over HTTP, so TasmoBackup-py must be able to reach it on the network.
Enter the Device IP at the top of the start page and click Add device. The app detects on its own whether it is a Tasmota or WLED device.
If the device has a web password, fill in user (opt.) and password (opt.) as well. They are stored encrypted. Without them the default credentials from the installation (TB_TASMOTA_USER / TB_TASMOTA_PASSWORD) are used.
Next to it are two fields, e.g. 192.168.178.1 and 24. Scan subnet probes every address in that range and adds every device it finds.
- Ranges up to /22 (1022 addresses) are allowed. Larger ones are refused because every silent address costs the full timeout.
- A /24 can take a few minutes – the page keeps loading until the scan is done.
- Set the pre-filled range under Settings → Default scan subnet.
If your Tasmota devices use an MQTT broker, enter it under Settings → MQTT discovery. The start page then shows the MQTT scan button: it sends STATUS 0 to the group topic (default tasmotas) and adds every device that answers. The backup itself still runs over HTTP.
Tip
A device that is already known is not added twice: the app recognises it by its MAC address and only updates the IP. A scan is therefore also the easiest way to pick up changed IP addresses.
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Device | name, below it Online/Offline and when the device last answered. A 🕒 hint means the device clock is off → Time Zones |
| IP | click to open the device's web interface |
| Version | firmware; followed by latest, outdated or custom build (→ Firmware Updates) |
| Last backup | time; the link below leads to the backup list |
| Auto-update | per-device ON/off switch (Tasmota only) |
| Actions | Backup, Update (firmware), Edit, Delete |
The list refreshes itself every 30 seconds. At the top you see the latest Tasmota release – it is fetched from GitHub at most every 6 hours.
Above the list:
- Backup all – backs up all devices now (several at a time).
- Refresh status – asks every device for name, version and reachability without taking a backup.
Edit lets you change the name and the credentials (user/password of the device's web interface – the stored password is never shown; leave empty = kept, tick = clear and use the default). After changing credentials the app queries the device right away and tells you whether it answers.
While Auto-update name from device is ticked, the name is overwritten from the device on every backup – untick it to keep your own name. The time zone sync is there too (→ Time Zones).
Delete removes the device together with all of its backups. The event log is kept. Download a backup first if you still need it.
Shortly after start (about 20 seconds) and then every 15 minutes the app checks which devices need a backup. New devices are therefore backed up right away, afterwards once per backup interval (default 24 hours) – see Backups and Restore.
