Firmware Updates EN
TasmoBackup-py can bring Tasmota devices up to the newest release – with a click or automatically. WLED devices are only backed up, not updated.
The app asks GitHub for the newest Tasmota release (at most every 6 hours; if GitHub is unreachable, the last known version is used). In the device list each version is followed by:
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| latest | official firmware, newest version |
| outdated | official firmware, a newer one exists |
| custom build | not an official release – never updated automatically (see below) |
Click Update in the device row and confirm. The button also works when the device is already current – the same version is flashed again.
Both switches must be on:
- Settings → Firmware auto-update → Enable auto-update globally: ON (master switch, default: off)
- in the device list, column Auto-update, for every device you want: ON
Updates happen as part of the scheduled backup: if a device is due for its backup and outdated, the update follows right after it. A device is therefore updated at most once per backup interval.
- Backup first. If it fails, the update is aborted – nothing is ever flashed without a backup.
- The app sends the device only the command
Upgrade 1. Which file it fetches is decided by the device's own OtaUrl. The app never sets an OtaUrl – so e.g. the German variant (tasmota-DE.bin.gz), which the version number doesn't reveal, is kept. - If the new firmware doesn't fit into the free flash, Tasmota does a two-stage update: first
tasmota-minimal, restart, then the real firmware, another restart. This takes a few minutes. - The app watches the device for a bit over 30 minutes:
- it reports a new version → event "update finished".
- it gets stuck on the minimal firmware → the app re-triggers the second stage once.
- it doesn't work at all → error in the event log (and a notification, if set up).
The restarts during an update do not raise a "device offline" alert.
Tip
Before the first update, check the OTA URL in the Tasmota interface under Firmware Upgrade. For the standard English firmware it is e.g. http://ota.tasmota.com/tasmota/release/tasmota.bin.gz.
Only firmware that reports its build as (release-…), e.g. 15.6.0(release-tasmota), counts as official. Everything else – e.g. a scripting build 15.6.0(gas) or a self-compiled (tasmota) – is a custom build:
- It is never updated automatically, even with both switches on (the Auto-update column shows "– (custom)").
- It is not marked "outdated".
- Update still works, but asks with an explicit WARNING: the device fetches the file from its OtaUrl, which may replace your custom build with the official firmware.
