1.4.0
MKW Vita 1.4.0
Bug fixes from the issue tracker, better items and effects, an award ceremony in VS, and smaller game files.
Important
You must rebuild your game files. The texture conversion and the packs changed, so most of the build runs again even if you kept your build folder from 1.3.0. Run Build Game Files.bat from this release's source code, then copy build\vita\data\mkw\ to your Vita again.
Delete the old .pak files and the models folder in ux0:data/mkw/ before copying. Some FTP clients write over an existing file without shortening it, which leaves black menus and missing textures.
What's new
Fixed issues
- Standstill mini-turbo (#4). Holding R and Cross while stopped now shows the smoke while it charges, then the sparks once it's ready.
- Items (#7):
- Blooper ink fades faster while you boost, and a Mushroom fades it out instead of popping it off.
- Dropped bananas land and stay when you get hit, instead of sliding away forever.
- Triple shells stay steady around you during a wheelie.
- Shrunk racers get flattened when you run into them after a Lightning.
- GBA Shy Guy Beach bombs (#9). The explosions are the right size again and no longer cover the sky.
- Blue Shell and wheelies (#13). A wheelie no longer lets you escape a Blue Shell.
Items and effects
- Blooper. You now see the Blooper itself before it inks you.
- Blue Shell. It circles in front of the leader before diving, instead of out of view above them.
- Red Shell. It no longer passes its target and comes back to hit them from the front.
- Explosions. The Shy Guy Beach cannonballs, Bowser's Castle fireballs and Moonview Highway's Bob-omb cars explode like a real Bob-omb, not as a plain ball.
- Fire. Flame pillars, Fire Snakes and the Bowser's Castle fireball glow and fade like fire, instead of solid cylinders and balls.
Racing
- Rosalina's Luma. Her Luma now floats along with her, as on the Wii, in karts and on bikes, for you and the CPUs. It follows the kart the way the original does: over hops, through cannons and zippers, and it shrinks or grows with Lightning and Mega Mushrooms.
- Tilt in the air. Stick up and down tilts your kart in the air, as on the Wii. Ghosts record it too.
- Lightning pose. The hit pose only plays during the spin, not for the whole time you're small.
- Standing wheelie. Holding a wheelie while stopped no longer makes the driver's head bob back and forth.
- Pause. Continue resumes right away. The race isn't reloaded anymore.
The Luma, the tilt and the Lightning pose are adapted from MKW-3DS 0.6.0 (thanks Epic0522 and MiniBandit).
Menus
- Award ceremony in VS. After the last race of a VS set you now get the podium too, without the trophy and rank, which are for Grand Prix only. This isn't in the original game.
- Skipping the ceremony during the winning run no longer leaves a black screen.
- Full-screen menus. The menus, title screen and movies now fill the whole screen. They had black bars at the top and bottom, left over from the 3DS screen.
- Title screen and main menu. The original widescreen art at the right proportions, instead of a stretched 4:3 crop.
Smaller and faster
- Smaller game files. About 1.9 GB instead of 2.85 GB: identical files in the packs are stored once.
- Faster builds. Each texture is converted once, even when many models use it, and temporary folders are deleted when a step is done (about 1.2 GB less on your PC).
- Retro Rewind VPK. Building it yourself now makes
mkw-retro-rewind.vpk.
Everything above is in the Retro Rewind edition too.
Known limitations
- Fire: no heat-shimmer yet, and the flame pillars' extra glow layer is missing.
- Blooper and Blue Shell: their positions on screen are set by eye and may still be adjusted.
- Rosalina's Luma: only in races for now, not in the menus or the award ceremony.
- Staff ghosts: you can't race or watch them yet (in progress). Their times already count toward unlocks.
Install
- Install
mkw.vpk(attached below) with VitaShell. - Rebuild your game files:
- Get the source with Git:
Already cloned? Run
git clone https://github.com/boomannotjeff/mkwiita.git cd mkwiitagit pullin that folder instead. - Run
Build Game Files.bat, which doesn't need VitaSDK, and drag in your Mario Kart Wii (USA) disc image.
- Get the source with Git:
- On the Vita, delete the old
.pakfiles and themodelsfolder inux0:data/mkw/. - Copy the contents of
build\vita\data\mkw\toux0:data/mkw/. Your licenses, times and ghosts stay. - Make sure
ur0:data/libshacccg.suprxexists (run ShaRKF00D once).
The VPK and the game files must come from the same release. The 1.4.0 VPK doesn't work with 1.3.0 game files, or the other way round.
The VPK contains no Nintendo game files. Please don't share your built game files.
Building it yourself
Build MKW Vita.batbuilds the game files and the VPK (needs VitaSDK).Build Game Files.batbuilds only the game files.- See BUILDING.md for details.
