Release list
1.3.0
MKW Vita 1.3.0
Progression and licenses, a Settings screen in the LiveArea, and Battle upgrades.
Important
You must rebuild your game files. The menus now have new text baked in from your disc (license names, "Locked", "Unlocked!"), so your current ux0:data/mkw files aren't enough. Run Build Game Files.bat from this release's source code, then copy build\vita\data\mkw\ to your Vita again. If you kept your build folder from 1.2.0, only the changed steps run, which takes a few minutes instead of the full build.
What's new
Licenses and progression
- Licenses. Pick an empty slot on the License page and the Vita's keyboard asks for a name. Each of the four licenses keeps its own unlocks, best times and ghosts.
Important
Don't want to unlock things? Open Settings from the LiveArea and turn on Unlock Everything. Every character, vehicle, cup and Mirror opens for every license, exactly like before. Turn it off any time to get each license's own progress back.
- Unlock everything as on the Wii. New licenses start with the original roster. Characters, karts, bikes, cups and Mirror open the same way they do on the Wii: cup wins, 1-star ranks, Time Trial courses played and expert staff ghosts. Full list: IGN's Mario Kart Wii unlockables.
- Cups. Star and Special Cup, Leaf and Lightning Cup open after trophies in the cups before them, in each class.
- Mirror and the karts/bikes switch. Mirror opens after winning every 150cc cup. Bikes in 50cc and karts in 100cc open after a trophy in every cup of that class.
- Expert staff ghosts. Your Time Trial times are checked against each course's real expert unlock time, read from your disc. Unlocking them counts toward Funky Kong, Baby Luigi, Tiny Titan and the rest.
- Locked and Unlocked. Locked choices are dimmed and say "Locked". New unlocks pop up with "Unlocked!" when you're back in the menus.
- Your old times stay. Best times and ghosts from 1.2.0 move into the first license you create.
Settings
Tap the new Settings button under Start on the game's LiveArea. Close the game first.
- Presets:
- Performance: a steady 60 FPS.
- Default: 45-60 FPS with everything on.
- Quality: 2x resolution with every effect at a locked 30 FPS.
- The preset shows Custom when you change things yourself.
- Resolution from 1 to 2. Type a value or step it with left/right. The game restarts by itself to apply it.
- Framerate, shadows, bloom, particles, object detail and minimap style.
- Unlock Everything, delete a license, and Reset to Defaults.
- Save and Start or Save and Exit. Circle leaves without saving.
Battle
- Random teams. Teams are shuffled at the start of every set, so you're no longer always red. CPUs, homing shells and name tags all follow the new teams.
- Thicker team outlines around the faces on the minimap.
Coin Runners
- Hits drop coins. Getting hit drops up to 3 coins (or all you have). They fly out of your kart and anyone can grab them, CPUs included. Untaken coins vanish after 10 seconds.
- Coins on the minimap. Every coin on the ground is a yellow dot. Taken coins disappear until they respawn.
- Coin sound. Picking up a coin plays the coin sound.
- Half the starting coins. Each arena starts with half as many coins as before.
Also new
- What's new pop-up. A one-time screen before the opening shows what each new version adds.
Known limitations
- Staff ghosts: you can't race or watch them yet (in progress). Their times already count toward unlocks.
- Ranks: Grand Prix star ranks are estimated from your points.
- Dropped coins: they don't check for walls or ledges, so one dropped next to a wall can end up inside it.
- Settings button: it only works when the game is closed.

1.2.0
MKW Vita 1.2.0
Mirror mode, the Grand Prix award ceremony, and Battle mode.
Important
You must rebuild your game files. The new ceremony graphics and the battle arena maps come from your disc, so your current ux0:data/mkw files aren't enough. Run Build Game Files.bat from this release's source code, then copy build\vita\data\mkw\ to your Vita again (your best times stay). If you kept your build folder from 1.1.0, only the changed steps run, which takes a few minutes instead of the full build.
What's new
Mirror mode
- Mirror Grand Prix works. The whole picture is flipped while the HUD stays readable, and the steering, the course map, the name tags and the sound all follow.
Grand Prix award ceremony
- The winning run. After the last race the top three drive the victory road in their own karts, filmed by the course's own cameras, until the camera pans up to the sky.
- The podium. Confetti falls, with "Congratulations!", the cup and your rank. If you didn't place, you get "Better luck next time!" instead.
- Final standings. All twelve racers' totals in two columns with your row highlighted, plus "You got 1st place!".
- Press A to skip ahead to the standings, then A again to leave.
Battle (playable, still in progress)
- Balloon Battle and Coin Runners on all ten arenas, 6 red vs 6 blue.
- Battle HUD: the red–blue team score, your points or coins, and +1/−1 popups.
- Arena map with a countdown timer from 3:00. Every racer's face has a team-coloured outline.
- Team-coloured balloons and name tags. Your teammates' items don't cost you balloons.
- Balloon rules:
- Popping an enemy's balloon scores a point.
- Losing your last balloon costs one.
- Falling off costs a balloon.
- A Mushroom or Star bump steals one.
- CPUs roam each arena and hunt the other team.
- Battles come in sets of two with running totals, and the results are coloured by team.
Races
- Grand Prix starting grid: after the first race, everyone starts where they finished the last one, so finish 12th and you start 12th. The first race starts you at the back, as on the Wii. VS sets do the same.
- Blooper ink now paints every inked racer black, you included.
Fixes
- Toad's Factory: the falling crates are visible (before, you could hit them but not see them).
- Delfino Pier loads in battle instead of asking you to choose another course.
Known limitations
- Battle:
- There's no team-introduction shot.
- Vehicles aren't team-coloured.
- The CPUs are simpler than on the Wii.
- Some rules (item odds, battles per set) are approximated.
- Ceremony: the rank grade is estimated from your points.

1.1.0
MKW Vita 1.1.0
Widescreen, much faster races, and a HUD that looks a lot more like the Wii's.
Important
Coming from 1.0.x? You must rebuild your game files. This version's new map and HUD graphics come from your disc, so the old ux0:data/mkw files aren't enough. Run Build Game Files.bat from this release's source code, then copy build\vita\data\mkw\ to your Vita again (your best times stay). If you kept your build folder, only the new steps run.
What's new
Widescreen and speed
- 16:9 widescreen. The picture fills the whole screen, with no side bars. Menus widen the way the Wii's widescreen mode does, and the race HUD sits in the corners.
- Races run at 45–60 FPS (1.0.0 ran at roughly 30). If you'd rather have a locked 30, see Settings below.
Race HUD
- Wii-style course map. It's made from each course's own Wii map, with every road and zone and the yellow start line.
- Race timer at the top right, above the lap counter, like on the Wii.
- Incoming-item warning. A red or blue shell coming for you shows in a circle at the bottom of the screen.
- Map icons spin when a racer gets hit.
- The speedometer is hidden by default. SELECT still toggles it.
Settings
Optional: create ux0:data/mkw/quality.txt with one name=value per line.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
framerate |
60 |
30 locks races to a steady 30 FPS |

Internal resolution from 1 to 2. 2 is sharper but slower: pair it with framerate=30 |
map |
1 |
0 shows the simpler racing-line map |
shadowVolumes |
1 |
0 turns off shadows |
bloomBlurRounds |
2 |
1 cheaper glow, 0 off |
particleBudget |
no limit | e.g. 96 for fewer particles |
For the sharp look at a locked 30 FPS, use framerate=30 and resolution=2.
