WriteIn v3.0.0 — The Publication & Visual Storytelling Update

WriteIn v3.0.0 is a major milestone release. This update brings publication-grade Microsoft Word (.docx) manuscript compilation, an infinite visual canvas for character relationship webs, window position persistence, deep-link protocol integration, native Windows file dialogs, and a brand-new interactive web showcase.

📄 1. Microsoft Word (.docx) Manuscript Compilation

Export your novel directly into standard industry manuscript format with one click:

  • Standard Industry Formatting: Automatically formats your manuscript with 1-inch margins, 12pt Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing, 0.5-inch paragraph indentation, and centered page breaks between chapters.
  • Front Matter & Navigation: Optional professional title page (author details, word count, contact information) and an automated Table of Contents.
  • Accurate Binder Hierarchy: Exports chapters and nested scenes strictly matching your manuscript binder order, with customizable chapter headings and scene dividers (* * *).
  • Error Propagation & Safety: Enforces complete data integrity during export—if any document fails to load, the compilation safely halts and alerts the author instead of generating an incomplete file.

🕸️ 2. Infinite Character Relationship Web

The Character Relationship Map has been re-architected with an unlimited, hardware-accelerated canvas:

  • Unbounded Infinite Canvas: Eliminates node clipping and rigid viewport walls using transformed SVG groups.
  • Smooth Navigation: Pan effortlessly with two fingers or middle-mouse drag; zoom centered at cursor with pinch-to-zoom or Ctrl + MouseWheel.
  • Hardware-Synchronized Dot Grid: Infinite background dot grid that scales seamlessly across all zoom levels.
  • Edge Auto-Panning: Moving characters to the edge of the screen automatically pans the viewport.
  • "Fit to Screen" & Zoom Presets: One-click camera framing helper (Fit View) and zoom percentage badge.
  • Persistent Layouts: Custom node positions and layouts are saved automatically to local storage per project.
  • Click vs. Drag Disambiguation: Moving character nodes no longer accidentally triggers the character dossier modal.

🪟 3. Window State & Workspace Restoration

  • Session Memory: WriteIn now remembers your window dimensions, position, and maximized state across app restarts via tauri-plugin-window-state.
  • Splashscreen Protection: Window state restoration safely excludes the splashscreen to ensure smooth, flicker-free startup and reveal.

🔗 4. Desktop Deep-Link Integration (writein://)

  • Custom URI Scheme: WriteIn now registers the writein:// protocol handler in the Windows registry via tauri-plugin-deep-link.
  • Browser & CLI Launching: Open specific novels, navigate directly to tabs, or launch new writing sessions directly from web pages, shortcuts, or scripts:
    • writein://new — Instantly launch novel creation.
    • writein://open?projectId={id} — Jump directly to a project.
    • writein://tab?to=manuscript|characters|timeline|bible — Switch active workspaces.

💾 5. Native Windows File Dialogs & Explorer Integration

  • Native File Picker: Replaced WebView browser blob downloads with native Windows Save As dialogs (tauri-plugin-dialog), giving you full control over where exported files are saved.
  • "Show in Folder": One-click button in the export completion banner instantly reveals the exported manuscript or backup archive in Windows File Explorer.

🌐 6. Brand Landing Page & Interactive Desk Simulator

  • A complete brand website deployed via Cloudflare Pages (website/).
  • Interactive Desk Simulator: Lets writers test-drive the three-pane manuscript tree, character relationship map, and editor right inside their browser.
  • Detailed feature showcases, privacy manifesto, and download portal for 64-bit Windows systems.

🛠️ Enhancements & Bug Fixes

  • Splashscreen Synchronization: App version is dynamically queried at runtime via Tauri APIs rather than hardcoded fallbacks.
  • Version Management Automation: Updated scripts/set-version.ps1 to simultaneously update desktop configurations (package.json, Cargo.toml, tauri.conf.json, appVersion.ts, splashscreen.html) and the website download links and metadata.
  • Branding & Assets: New crisp application icon sets and updated branding graphics across the app, splashscreen, and website.
  • Test Coverage: Added dedicated test suites for DOCX compilation, relationship graph layout mathematics, native dialog export flows, deep-link routing, and window-state persistence (over 140+ Vitest tests and 35+ Rust tests passing).

Requirements

  • Microsoft Edge WebView2

This application is built with Tauri and requires the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime which most modern Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations already include WebView2.

If WebView2 is not installed, the installer may require an Internet connection to download and install it.

Installing on an offline computer? Make sure Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is installed before installing the application.

The WebView2 requirement is for the application's Windows runtime. It does not mean that the application itself requires an Internet connection to perform its normal offline functionality.
