WriteIn v4.3.0 — In-App Changelog & UI Refresh

WriteIn v4.3.0 introduces a user-facing "What's New" modal that appears on startup after an update and is also accessible from Settings, making release notes a first-class part of the writing workspace. Alongside this, the header bar receives a visual refresh with a new brand icon, and the project's documentation suite is significantly expanded.

🚀 Key Highlights & What's New

🆕 In-App "What's New" Changelog Modal

  • Startup Update Awareness: A new modal automatically opens on launch when a new version is detected, showing the latest highlights. It respects a "Don't show again" preference stored in localStorage, so you're never nagged after you've dismissed it.
  • Settings-Accessible Anytime: A "View What's New" button in the Settings view lets you reopen the changelog on demand, giving you a permanent record of features, fixes, and improvements.
  • Two-Tab Interface: The modal offers a Latest Highlights view for the current release and an All Releases history tab, pulling from a structured RELEASES data file that documents every version from v1.0.0 through v4.2.1.

🎨 Header Bar Visual Refresh

  • Brand Image in Header: The application header now includes a dedicated writeicon.png image alongside the "WriteIn" brand name, improving visual identity and polish.

📚 Expanded Documentation

  • Comprehensive Architecture & Database Docs: The ARCHITECTURE.md and DATABASE.md files receive substantial updates, including C4 component diagrams, detailed table schemas (Migrations 001–006), indexing strategy, and ER diagrams.
  • TUTORIAL.md Expansion: The user guide is reorganized with a full table of contents covering 27 sections, from manuscript hierarchy to device transfer and keyboard shortcuts.

🛠️ Enhancements & Bug Fixes

  • Changelog Data Model: Added a typed RELEASES array (changelogData.ts) with ReleaseNote, ReleaseHighlight, and structured details groups (Added/Fixed/Changed/Security) to power the in-app changelog.
  • useChangelogWatcher Hook: Implemented a startup hook that checks localStorage against the current app version and triggers the modal after a brief delay (900 ms default) to let the splashscreen close cleanly.
  • ChangelogModal Component: Created a fully styled modal with tab switching, keyboard escape support, and a "Don't show again" checkbox that persists the user's choice per version.
  • Comprehensive Tests: Added Vitest suites for the ChangelogModal, useChangelogWatcher, and the RELEASES data validation, covering localStorage persistence and startup suppression logic.
  • Version Bump to 4.3.0: Synchronized across package.json, Cargo.toml, tauri.conf.json, and the website download section.
  • Header Bar Layout: Replaced the previous left-side brand element with a dedicated image + "WriteIn" text pair, and removed an unused BookOpen icon import.
  • Settings View Props: Added an optional onOpenChangelog callback to SettingsView, wired through App.tsx and MainContent.
  • Changelog Suppression Logic: Ensured that the modal does not re-appear if the user has already seen the current version or has chosen "Don't show again," with proper cleanup of the suppression key when the checkbox is unchecked.

WriteIn v4.2.1 — Desktop Environment Detection & Installer Polish

WriteIn v4.2.1 is a focused stability and packaging update. This release resolves desktop runtime environment detection in Tauri WebView environments—ensuring the auto-updater and native desktop integrations initialize reliably—and enriches application packaging metadata for Windows installers.

🚀 Key Highlights & What's New

🖥️ Reliable Desktop Environment Detection for Native Services

  • Seamless Auto-Updater & Native Hooks: Fixed runtime detection so desktop-specific services (including background update detection, manual preference checks, and deep link handlers) reliably recognize the desktop runtime and never erroneously fall back to web/mock mode.
  • Vite Runtime Prefix Fix: Corrected Vite's environment prefix configuration (['VITE_', 'TAURI_ENV_']) so all native Tauri environment variables (TAURI_ENV_PLATFORM, TAURI_ENV_ARCH, etc.) are exposed directly to the frontend application bundle.

📦 Standardized Product Name & Windows Installer Metadata

  • Official Branding: Standardized the application product name to WriteIn across package.json and tauri.conf.json.
  • Installer Metadata: Enriched installer configuration with official publisher information (Carlo Dandan), copyright notice, application category (Productivity), and full descriptive summaries.
  • Streamlined NSIS Configuration: Configured explicit Windows installer properties, setting currentUser mode, English language support, and dedicated executable icons for both NSIS setup and MSI packages.

🛠️ Enhancements & Bug Fixes

  • vite.config.ts: Fixed envPrefix array from TAURI_ENV_* to TAURI_ENV_ (Vite does not support wildcards in envPrefix definitions).
  • src/services/tauriIpc.ts: Implemented multi-tier fallback checks in isDesktopTauri() verifying isTauri(), TAURI_ENV_PLATFORM, and non-mobile user agents.
  • src-tauri/tauri.conf.json: Added installer icon declarations, publisher tags, and package descriptions.
  • Website Downloads: Updated landing page download links and version badges to point directly to v4.2.1 release assets.

WriteIn v4.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Sep 04:33

WriteIn v4.2.0 — End-to-End Encrypted Device Transfer & Security Hardening

WriteIn v4.2.0 introduces a zero-knowledge, end-to-end encrypted device-to-device transfer system. You can now seamlessly and securely migrate your entire WriteIn studio library—projects, chapters, worldbuilding, timelines, character networks, and attachments—from one desktop machine to another without ever trusting your data to third-party cloud databases or compromising your offline privacy.

🌟 What's New

🔒 Zero-Knowledge Device-to-Device Library Transfer

Transfer your entire writing environment between laptops or desktops with zero configuration:

  • Temporary 10-Minute Pairing Sessions: Generate a short, human-readable pairing code (XXXX-XXXX) on your source computer and connect from your destination computer.
  • Client-Side End-to-End Encryption:
    • Ephemeral ECDH (P-256) key agreement with HKDF-SHA256 key derivation.
    • Authenticated payload encryption and decryption via AES-256-GCM (96-bit random IV).
    • SHA-256 package checksum validation to detect tampering in transit.
    • Zero-knowledge: Decryption keys never leave your devices, and the temporary relay worker only handles blind, short-lived ciphertext chunks.
  • Pre-Import Package Inspection: Review exact project counts, word counts, document totals, and attachment statistics before confirming the import.
  • Conflict-Safe & Atomic Import: Imported projects are remapped and isolated within SQLite transactions, appending (Transferred) to conflicting titles to prevent accidental overwrites of existing local manuscripts.
  • Transfer Audit History: View past incoming and outgoing transfers directly in the new Settings > Devices panel.

🛡️ Security & Reliability Improvements

  • CSPRNG Hardening (CWE-338): Replaced pseudo-random math calls with cryptographically secure random number generators (crypto.getRandomValues) for all session tokens, mock IDs, and fallback device identifiers.
  • Safe Session Cancellation: Canceling an ongoing transfer immediately invalidates session tokens and purges ephemeral buffers on both ends.
  • Attachment Relational Integrity: Enhanced attachment import to remap internal IDs and relational references atomically, ensuring image and media attachments stay bound to their respective entities.
  • Updater Key Rotation: Rotated minisign signing keys for the Tauri v2 auto-updater to maintain high delivery security.
  • Dev-Mode Relay Switcher: Added support for local development relay testing (127.0.0.1:8787) alongside the production Cloudflare Worker relay.

🧪 Testing & Tooling

  • Added automated test suites covering Web Crypto primitives, end-to-end simulated device transfers, and the DeviceTransferView user interface.
  • Enhanced version management scripts (set-version.ps1) with lossless UTF-8 reading/writing, SemVer format validation, and automated website component synchronization.

WriteIn v4.1.0 (hotfix)

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Sep 00:07

WriteIn v4.1.0 — The Editor Precision & Paste Formatting Hotfix

WriteIn v4.1.0 is an essential stability and quality-of-life update. This release introduces a smart clipboard paste sanitization engine with customizable style matching, fixes critical cursor jump behaviors during auto-save, eliminates chapter word count bleeding in the manuscript binder, adds expanded character relationship presets, and refines diagnostic reporting.

🚀 Key Highlights & What's New

📋 1. Smart Clipboard Paste Formatting & Style Matching

Pasting content into your novel now seamlessly adapts to your active manuscript styling:

  • Match Current Style (Default): Automatically strips foreign web and Word styles (such as fixed fonts, pt/px font sizes, hardcoded text colors, inline highlight backgrounds, and MsoNormal classes) while preserving semantic author formatting—including bold (<strong>), italics (<em>), strikethrough (<s>), underline (<u>), headings, blockquotes, and lists.
  • Google Docs & Microsoft Word Cleansing:
    • Detects and unwraps Google Docs' outer <b style="font-weight:normal"> wrapper, preventing pasted text from erroneously turning entirely bold.
    • Intelligently translates inline CSS rules (e.g. font-weight: 700 and font-style: italic) into native semantic novel tags.
  • Selectable Paste Preferences: Configure your default clipboard behavior in the Editor Preferences drawer:
    • Match Style: Inherits novel font, size, line-height, and light/dark theme while keeping bold/italics.
    • Keep Format: Preserves original source styling, headings, and lists as permitted by the editor.
    • Plain Text: Strips all formatting, inserting clean unformatted paragraphs.
  • Instant Plain-Text Shortcut: Press Ctrl+Shift+V (or Cmd+Shift+V) anytime to paste as unformatted plain text on the fly.

🎯 2. Rock-Solid Cursor Stability During Auto-Save

  • Eliminated Cursor Jump Bug: Fixed an issue where pausing typing for 1 second triggered an auto-save that forced TipTap's setContent to execute, rebuilding the ProseMirror document state and throwing the cursor to the very bottom or end of the page.
  • Intelligent Content Guarding: Document content is now only synchronized when actively switching chapters or on initial load, leaving your active cursor position, selection, and scroll position completely undisturbed while writing.
  • Paper Click Refinement: Clicking on the margin or padding of the paper surface now focuses the editor at your current position without forcing the cursor to jump to the end of the chapter.

🌲 3. Manuscript Tree Word Count Isolation

  • Prevented Cross-Chapter Word Count Bleeding: Resolved a race condition where navigating between chapters flushed pending saves into the newly selected chapter, causing previous chapter word counts to overwrite subsequent chapters in the manuscript tree.
  • Explicit Target Node Locking: The document save engine now binds saves strictly to the exact chapter ID loaded in the editor rather than UI selection state.
  • Smart Dirty Tracking: Added internal dirty tracking (isDirtyRef) and suppressed synthetic update transactions (emitUpdate: false) during chapter loading, ensuring that simply browsing or reading chapters never schedules accidental saves.

👥 4. Expanded Character Relationship Presets

  • New Relationship Tags: Added Ally / Friend and Ex-Lover / Ex-Partner options to the character relationship modal, giving authors more nuanced presets for character webs.

🛠️ Enhancements & Bug Fixes

  • Updater & Logger Refinements: Integrated error preservation and progress log deduplication improvements into src/utils/logger.ts and src/components/updater/UpdateCheck.tsx.
  • Version Management Automation: Synchronized version identifiers to 4.1.0 across all desktop targets (package.json, Cargo.toml, tauri.conf.json, appVersion.ts, splashscreen.html) and official website links.
  • Expanded Test Suite: Added 11 new tests covering paste sanitization (Google Docs, Word, web HTML, plain-text) and distinct chapter word count preservation in the manuscript binder (158 automated tests passing).

🐛 Bugs

  • Updater Signing Key Configuration: The updater currently reports a warning that the TAURI_SIGNING_PRIVATE_KEY does not match the public key configured under plugins > updater > pubkey.
  • Impact: Automatic update verification may not work correctly at runtime.
  • Status: Known issue. The updater signing configuration will be corrected in a future release.
  • Workaround: For now, download and install the latest release manually from the release assets.

WriteIn v4.0.0 — The Reliability, Diagnostics & Updater Experience Update

WriteIn v4.0.0 focuses on system transparency, desktop reliability, and seamless software maintenance. This release introduces a unified multi-target diagnostic logging system, a redesigned and animated update-check experience with live timestamp tracking, bulletproof updater process coordination, component cleanups, and privacy-conscious analytics for the brand landing page.

🚀 Key Highlights & What's New

📜 1. Unified Native Application & Diagnostic Logging

WriteIn now features a centralized logging pipeline bridging the web frontend and native desktop runtime:

  • Dual-Target Logging: Integrated tauri-plugin-log and @tauri-apps/plugin-log alongside a unified logger utility that broadcasts messages simultaneously to webview console tools and native desktop log streams on disk/stdout.
  • Full Updater Lifecycle Tracing: Complete observability over update operations—recording check requests, version discoveries, download progress milestones (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%), and final application relaunch handoffs.
  • Preserved Error Context: Error objects and failure details are structured and preserved across asynchronous IPC boundaries, making diagnostics clear without swallowing stack traces.

🔄 2. Animated Update Checking & Real-Time Feedback

The software update interface has been revamped for immediate, satisfying visual confirmation:

  • Spinning Check Animation: Clicking Check for Updates now animates the refresh icon with a smooth spin effect (animate-spin) backed by a minimum duration guard (800ms) so you always know a check is actively executing.
  • "Last Checked" Timestamp Tracking: The Preferences drawer now records and displays the exact time updates were last checked (e.g., Last checked: 07:15 AM), giving authors confidence that their installation is current.
  • Interactive Status Transitions: Clear, non-intrusive status messaging indicating whether checking is in progress, an update is available, download is progressing, or the system is ready to relaunch.

🛡️ 3. Resilient Updater Coordination & Progress Deduplication

  • Shared Promise Coordination: Simultaneous update check triggers (such as background startup checks paired with manual clicks) are automatically deduplicated into a single active promise, eliminating redundant network requests and race conditions.
  • Desktop Platform Guards: Gracefully bypasses native Tauri updater and process relaunch operations when run in headless, CI, or web simulation test environments without throwing unhandled exceptions.

🌐 4. Website Analytics & Component Polish

  • Google Analytics 4 (GA4): Integrated lightweight, privacy-focused GA4 telemetry onto the official brand landing page (website/index.html) to track download traction and page engagement.
  • Component Cleanup: Removed redundant icon imports and trimmed visual noise across modals (Compile, Import, Goals, Updater) to keep the writing environment crisp and focused.

🛠️ Enhancements & Bug Fixes

  • Automated Version Management: Synchronized version identifiers to 4.0.0 across all desktop targets (package.json, Cargo.toml, tauri.conf.json, appVersion.ts, splashscreen.html) and website components (DownloadSection.tsx, Hero.tsx, Navbar.tsx, Footer.tsx).
  • Expanded Automated Test Suite: Added dedicated tests for logger output, updater progress milestones, manual check triggers, and UI animation state transitions (logger.test.ts, updater.test.ts, updaterComponents.test.tsx).
  • Clean Production Compilation: Full TypeScript verification, Vitest test suite (150+ tests passing), and optimized Vite bundling completed with zero errors.

WriteIn v3.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Sep 00:26

WriteIn v3.0.0 — The Publication & Visual Storytelling Update

WriteIn v3.0.0 is a major milestone release. This update brings publication-grade Microsoft Word (.docx) manuscript compilation, an infinite visual canvas for character relationship webs, window position persistence, deep-link protocol integration, native Windows file dialogs, and a brand-new interactive web showcase.

🚀 Key Highlights & What's New

📄 1. Microsoft Word (.docx) Manuscript Compilation

Export your novel directly into standard industry manuscript format with one click:

  • Standard Industry Formatting: Automatically formats your manuscript with 1-inch margins, 12pt Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing, 0.5-inch paragraph indentation, and centered page breaks between chapters.
  • Front Matter & Navigation: Optional professional title page (author details, word count, contact information) and an automated Table of Contents.
  • Accurate Binder Hierarchy: Exports chapters and nested scenes strictly matching your manuscript binder order, with customizable chapter headings and scene dividers (* * *).
  • Error Propagation & Safety: Enforces complete data integrity during export—if any document fails to load, the compilation safely halts and alerts the author instead of generating an incomplete file.

🕸️ 2. Infinite Character Relationship Web

The Character Relationship Map has been re-architected with an unlimited, hardware-accelerated canvas:

  • Unbounded Infinite Canvas: Eliminates node clipping and rigid viewport walls using transformed SVG groups.
  • Smooth Navigation: Pan effortlessly with two fingers or middle-mouse drag; zoom centered at cursor with pinch-to-zoom or Ctrl + MouseWheel.
  • Hardware-Synchronized Dot Grid: Infinite background dot grid that scales seamlessly across all zoom levels.
  • Edge Auto-Panning: Moving characters to the edge of the screen automatically pans the viewport.
  • "Fit to Screen" & Zoom Presets: One-click camera framing helper (Fit View) and zoom percentage badge.
  • Persistent Layouts: Custom node positions and layouts are saved automatically to local storage per project.
  • Click vs. Drag Disambiguation: Moving character nodes no longer accidentally triggers the character dossier modal.

🪟 3. Window State & Workspace Restoration

  • Session Memory: WriteIn now remembers your window dimensions, position, and maximized state across app restarts via tauri-plugin-window-state.
  • Splashscreen Protection: Window state restoration safely excludes the splashscreen to ensure smooth, flicker-free startup and reveal.

🔗 4. Desktop Deep-Link Integration (writein://)

  • Custom URI Scheme: WriteIn now registers the writein:// protocol handler in the Windows registry via tauri-plugin-deep-link.
  • Browser & CLI Launching: Open specific novels, navigate directly to tabs, or launch new writing sessions directly from web pages, shortcuts, or scripts:
    • writein://new — Instantly launch novel creation.
    • writein://open?projectId={id} — Jump directly to a project.
    • writein://tab?to=manuscript|characters|timeline|bible — Switch active workspaces.

💾 5. Native Windows File Dialogs & Explorer Integration

  • Native File Picker: Replaced WebView browser blob downloads with native Windows Save As dialogs (tauri-plugin-dialog), giving you full control over where exported files are saved.
  • "Show in Folder": One-click button in the export completion banner instantly reveals the exported manuscript or backup archive in Windows File Explorer.

🌐 6. Brand Landing Page & Interactive Desk Simulator

  • A complete brand website deployed via Cloudflare Pages (website/).
  • Interactive Desk Simulator: Lets writers test-drive the three-pane manuscript tree, character relationship map, and editor right inside their browser.
  • Detailed feature showcases, privacy manifesto, and download portal for 64-bit Windows systems.

🛠️ Enhancements & Bug Fixes

  • Splashscreen Synchronization: App version is dynamically queried at runtime via Tauri APIs rather than hardcoded fallbacks.
  • Version Management Automation: Updated scripts/set-version.ps1 to simultaneously update desktop configurations (package.json, Cargo.toml, tauri.conf.json, appVersion.ts, splashscreen.html) and the website download links and metadata.
  • Branding & Assets: New crisp application icon sets and updated branding graphics across the app, splashscreen, and website.
  • Test Coverage: Added dedicated test suites for DOCX compilation, relationship graph layout mathematics, native dialog export flows, deep-link routing, and window-state persistence (over 140+ Vitest tests and 35+ Rust tests passing).
