WriteIn v4.3.0 — In-App Changelog & UI Refresh

WriteIn v4.3.0 introduces a user-facing "What's New" modal that appears on startup after an update and is also accessible from Settings, making release notes a first-class part of the writing workspace. Alongside this, the header bar receives a visual refresh with a new brand icon, and the project's documentation suite is significantly expanded.

🚀 Key Highlights & What's New

🆕 In-App "What's New" Changelog Modal

  • Startup Update Awareness: A new modal automatically opens on launch when a new version is detected, showing the latest highlights. It respects a "Don't show again" preference stored in localStorage, so you're never nagged after you've dismissed it.
  • Settings-Accessible Anytime: A "View What's New" button in the Settings view lets you reopen the changelog on demand, giving you a permanent record of features, fixes, and improvements.
  • Two-Tab Interface: The modal offers a Latest Highlights view for the current release and an All Releases history tab, pulling from a structured RELEASES data file that documents every version from v1.0.0 through v4.2.1.

🎨 Header Bar Visual Refresh

  • Brand Image in Header: The application header now includes a dedicated writeicon.png image alongside the "WriteIn" brand name, improving visual identity and polish.

📚 Expanded Documentation

  • Comprehensive Architecture & Database Docs: The ARCHITECTURE.md and DATABASE.md files receive substantial updates, including C4 component diagrams, detailed table schemas (Migrations 001–006), indexing strategy, and ER diagrams.
  • TUTORIAL.md Expansion: The user guide is reorganized with a full table of contents covering 27 sections, from manuscript hierarchy to device transfer and keyboard shortcuts.

🛠️ Enhancements & Bug Fixes

  • Changelog Data Model: Added a typed RELEASES array (changelogData.ts) with ReleaseNote, ReleaseHighlight, and structured details groups (Added/Fixed/Changed/Security) to power the in-app changelog.
  • useChangelogWatcher Hook: Implemented a startup hook that checks localStorage against the current app version and triggers the modal after a brief delay (900 ms default) to let the splashscreen close cleanly.
  • ChangelogModal Component: Created a fully styled modal with tab switching, keyboard escape support, and a "Don't show again" checkbox that persists the user's choice per version.
  • Comprehensive Tests: Added Vitest suites for the ChangelogModal, useChangelogWatcher, and the RELEASES data validation, covering localStorage persistence and startup suppression logic.
  • Version Bump to 4.3.0: Synchronized across package.json, Cargo.toml, tauri.conf.json, and the website download section.
  • Header Bar Layout: Replaced the previous left-side brand element with a dedicated image + "WriteIn" text pair, and removed an unused BookOpen icon import.
  • Settings View Props: Added an optional onOpenChangelog callback to SettingsView, wired through App.tsx and MainContent.
  • Changelog Suppression Logic: Ensured that the modal does not re-appear if the user has already seen the current version or has chosen "Don't show again," with proper cleanup of the suppression key when the checkbox is unchecked.

Requirements

  • Microsoft Edge WebView2

This application is built with Tauri and requires the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime which most modern Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations already include WebView2.

If WebView2 is not installed, the installer may require an Internet connection to download and install it.

Installing on an offline computer? Make sure Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is installed before installing the application.

The WebView2 requirement is for the application's Windows runtime. It does not mean that the application itself requires an Internet connection to perform its normal offline functionality.
