Halo: Combat Evolved for Mac (Apple silicon), the macOS port of OpenCE.

What's new in 1.0.2

  • Clicks no longer lag. With a window manager such as Magnet running, each left click, and the mouse's movement with it, reached the game about 140 ms late, so your aim stopped at every shot and then caught up. The game now answers macOS's Accessibility questions as they arrive instead of once a frame, and clicks arrive in about 10 ms.
  • Fewer draws and GL calls, from OpenCE: decals, effects and the level's structure are drawn in fewer, larger batches, and the HUD's and menus' small draws are packed together.

1.0.2 plays online and on LAN with 1.0.1.

Install

  1. Download Halo.dmg below, open it and drag Halo into Applications.
  2. Open Halo. The first time, if macOS says that it cannot check the app (it is not notarized): click Done, open System Settings > Privacy & Security, click Open Anyway next to "Halo was blocked", and confirm.
  3. At the first start, select your disc image (.iso or .xiso) of Halo: Combat Evolved for the original Xbox. The game copies its maps (about 2 GB) and starts.

Requirements

  • A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later); macOS 11 or later (tested on macOS 27).
  • Your own copy of the game: the game data is not included.

Halo keeps its maps, saves and settings in ~/Library/Application Support/OpenCE. Halo is a trademark of Microsoft; this is a fan project, not affiliated with Microsoft, Bungie or Xbox.
