Creating a Study machine

The study.yml and study_vm.yml playbooks will create an LXC container or a QEMU VM respectively. The objective is to create a machine that is ready for any kind of testing you want. This can be very handy when following along with a tutorial for a new service being studied.

This can also be used to study the different settings that can be provided to the cloudcodger.proxmox_client.cloud_init and cloudcodger.proxmox_client.lxc roles.

Playbook study

The study.yml playbook contains a single play.

Create study CT play

The play runs on local_study (an alias for localhost in lab/local_aliases.yml) and has settings in lab/host_vars/local_study.yml.

Role that is run:

  • cloudcodger.proxmox_client.lxc to:
    • Create the study CT. This is the same machine name as the study_vm.yml playbook. Use either one or the other and not both at the same time.

Playbook study_vm

The study_vm.yml playbook contains a single play.

Create silo VM play

The play runs on local_study_vm (an alias for localhost in lab/local_aliases.yml) and has settings in lab/host_vars/local_study_vm.yml.

Role that is run:

  • cloudcodger.proxmox_client.cloud_init to:
    • Create the study CT. This is the same machine name as the study.yml playbook. Use either one or the other and not both at the same time.

Example commands

Create the CT.

ansible-playbook -i lab study.yml

Create the VM.

ansible-playbook -i lab study_vm.yml

Destroy the CT or VM when no longer needed or to start from scratch.

ansible-playbook -i lab pve_remove_guests.yml -e remove_host_patterns=study
