v2.2.0
Animated Diagrams 2.2.0
Mermaid support. Paste a Mermaid diagram and get an animation, or export your diagram back to Mermaid for
GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian or Confluence.
✨ What's new
Import from Mermaid (File → Import from Mermaid…, Ctrl+Shift+I)
- sequenceDiagram → animated scenario: participants become nodes and edges are created between them;
messages become request / response / error / event steps (2xx/4xx/5xxcodes set success or error);
activateshows the "Active" state,Notebecomes a note,parruns steps in parallel;loop,alt,opt,
criticalandbreakbecome chapters;autonumberandtitleare supported. - flowchart / graph → diagram: shapes map to element types (database, queue, decision, document, cloud…),
edges keep labels, arrows, dotted and thick lines;style,classDefandlinkStylecolors are kept;
nodes are laid out the way Mermaid lays them out. - Markdown:
```mermaidblocks in.mdfiles are read. A flowchart gives the layout, a sequenceDiagram
gives the scenario. - Syntax errors show the line and column. The text is prefilled from the clipboard.
.mmd,.mermaidand.mdfiles open via Open, drag and drop or the command line.- Powered by merman, a Rust implementation compatible with mermaid.js;
no browser or Node.js needed.
Export to Mermaid (File → Export → Mermaid)
- Flowchart (.mmd): shapes, labels, arrows, line styles and colors. Exact positions are kept in
%% ad:poscomments for a lossless re-import. - Sequence diagram (.mmd): the scenario as messages, notes,
parblocks, timers (⏱), states (●) and
chapters (⚑). - Markdown (.md): both diagrams, ready for a README.
CLI and MCP
animated-diagrams --export checkout.gif checkout.mmd # sequenceDiagram → animated GIF
animated-diagrams --export docs/flow.md diagram.json # diagram → Markdown with Mermaid
animated-diagrams --export seq.mmd --mermaid sequence diagram.json- New MCP tools:
import_mermaid(text or file) andto_mermaid(returns the text without writing a file).
export_animationacceptsformat: "mermaid"withmermaidKind. - An agent can sketch a flow as a sequenceDiagram, import it and refine it.
Fixes
- MCP: messages added without
edgeIdnow fly along the edge between their nodes, not the first edge of the
document. Changing a message's sender or receiver moves it to the matching edge. - Labels on curved edges are no longer clipped at the edge of exported frames.
- Files passed on the command line open after the main window appears.
Project
- Roadmap: planned releases up to 4.4.
🛠 Building from source
Mermaid import needs Rust 1.95+ (cargo): merman is built from crates.io via Corrosion and linked statically.
Without Rust, configure with -DWITH_MERMAID=OFF; export to Mermaid still works.
⚠️ Known limitations
- Only
flowchart/graphandsequenceDiagramare imported; other Mermaid types (classDiagram, gantt, …) are
skipped with a warning.subgraphframes are not imported (their nodes are). - Mermaid is a static format: timing and effects are simplified on export. Use GIF, video, PowerPoint or the
HTML player for animation. - The Windows installer is not code-signed. SmartScreen may warn: More info → Run anyway.
- The detailed guides in
docs/are in Russian for now.
v2.1.0
Animated Diagrams 2.1.0
The first public release. Draw an architecture diagram, animate how requests flow through it, and show
it anywhere: GIF, video, PowerPoint or an interactive web player.
✨ Highlights
Animate request flows
- Timeline steps: messages along edges (packets, curves, trails), node states (down / active / success),
timers and timeouts, notes, actions, edge animations, key-frame effects. - Templates with roles: retries, timeout + fallback, pub/sub, cache-aside and more.
- Markers split the scenario into chapters; presenter mode (
F5) plays chapter by chapter on click.
Export anywhere
-
GIF (one palette for the whole animation), WebM (VP9 / AV1), MP4 (H.264), PNG frames.
Encoding runs in-process; no externalffmpegis needed. -
PowerPoint (.pptx), four kinds of slides:
- auto-playing video;
- animated GIF (works in Google Slides too);
- editable shapes with native PowerPoint animations;
- key frames with the Morph transition.
One slide per chapter; slides can be added to an existing presentation.
-
Interactive HTML player: one self-contained page (the engine compiled to WebAssembly) for
reveal.js, Slidev, Marp or an<iframe>. -
Exports run in the background while you keep editing.
Make it yours
- Design systems: color tokens, state and message colors, fonts, default styles. One choice restyles
the diagram and the editor's own interface. - A library of element types, effects and animation templates.
- Plugins: JSON packs you can build in the editor. Bundled: Cloud kit, Data platform (PostgreSQL,
ClickHouse, Kafka, CDC) and Security kit (OAuth, JWT, WAF).
AI-ready
- A built-in MCP server (stdio and HTTP) lets an agent build, check and export diagrams. A skill
for agents is included.
Everyday comfort
- Tabs with session restore, dockable panels, palette favorites, undo / redo.
- draw.io import, including compressed and multi-page files.
- English and Russian interface.
- Crash reports with stack traces.
- Future versions install over this one and update it in place: same folder and shortcuts, settings
and user plugins kept. - The wizard is in English or Russian.
- Silent install:
animated-diagrams-2.1.0-win64.exe /VERYSILENT /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES.
⚠️ Known limitations
- The Windows installer is not code-signed. SmartScreen may warn: More info → Run anyway.
- PowerPoint files are checked against the ECMA-376 schemas, python-pptx and LibreOffice. Morph slides
need PowerPoint 2019 / 365; older versions show a fade instead. - The HTML player needs a browser with WebAssembly exceptions (Chrome / Edge 95+, Firefox 100+,
Safari 15.2+). Web fonts are not embedded. - The detailed guides in
docs/are in Russian for now.
