Death and Storage
Applies to all versions. The legacy NeoForge 26.2 betas have different death rules (see below).
When a player dies, the cosmetic items are dropped on the ground with the rest of the loot, unless any of these is true:
| Condition | Result |
|---|---|
The keepInventory game rule is on |
Cosmetic items stay in their slots. |
CosArmorKeepThroughDeath is true (Configuration) |
Cosmetic items stay in their slots. |
| Corail Tombstone is installed | Cosmetic items stay in their slots (they are not put in the grave, so they cannot be lost or end up equipped as real armor). |
| Another mod cancels the drop through the API | Cosmetic items stay in their slots. |
Your real armor follows the normal Minecraft rules; Armor Cosmetic never moves it.
On the NeoForge 1.21.1 build the Corail Tombstone rule exists since Armor Cosmetic 1.0.1.
On the NeoForge 26.2.0.32, 26.2.0.37 and 26.2.0.45 betas only keepInventory and the API can stop the drop: there is no CosArmorKeepThroughDeath option and no special handling of Corail Tombstone (with Tombstone the cosmetic items end up in the grave like any other drop).
Cosmetic items are stored on the server, one file per player, next to Minecraft's own player data:
| Minecraft | File |
|---|---|
| 1.21.1 | <world>/playerdata/<player uuid>.cosarmor |
| 26.1.2, 26.2, 26.3 | <world>/players/data/<player uuid>.cosarmor |
- The file is an NBT file with the four slots, their skin toggles and the hidden flags of the API.
- It is written when the player logs out, when the game saves the player, and when the server stops.
- Deleting a player's
.cosarmorfile (with the server stopped) removes that player's cosmetic items.
All players' cosmetic slots and skin toggles are sent to every client, so everybody sees the same thing.
