Craft Chain

Applies to all versions (1.21.1 NeoForge).

When the button appears

Open a crafting table or your inventory and look at a crafting recipe in JEI. The Craft Chain button appears under the recipe's transfer arrow when:

• the recipe is a regular crafting-table recipe (shaped or shapeless; special recipes such as firework or map cloning are not covered);
• your inventory does not already hold every ingredient;
• but the missing ingredients can be crafted, directly or through several levels of sub-recipes, from what is in your inventory;
• the feature is enabled (Configuration).

The resolution looks at crafting-table recipes only (no furnaces, stonecutters or machines) and goes at most maxChainDepth levels deep (16 by default).

What happens when you click it

The server checks everything again against your real inventory and then:

1. Crafts every missing sub-ingredient, deepest ingredients first, taking the materials from your inventory. Container items left by a recipe (for example empty buckets) go back to your inventory.
2. Puts the crafted items in your inventory; anything that does not fit is dropped at your feet.
3. Places the recipe you were looking at into the crafting grid, like clicking it in the recipe book, and closes the JEI screen so you can see it. If the recipe does not fit the grid (a 3×3 recipe in the 2×2 inventory grid), nothing is placed and you can move the items yourself.
4. Shows "All sub-ingredients for … are ready - craft it now!".

The final item itself is never crafted automatically: you take it from the result slot, as with any normal craft.

If the materials are not enough, nothing is crafted and you get "Missing base materials: …" with the exact items and amounts that are short. If your inventory changes between the check and the crafting, the chain stops and you get "An error occurred while crafting the chain".

Notes

• Only the player inventory is used (including the armor and off-hand slots): chests, backpacks and storage networks are not.
• When a recipe slot accepts several items (for example any planks), Chain Crafter prefers the items you already have enough of.
• The button needs the crafting table or inventory screen to be open; requests made from other screens are ignored by the server.
