People

Ctrl+3. Your address books down the left, everybody in them in the middle, the person you picked on the right.

Address books are CardDAV or local, and a contact is a vCard. Nothing is invented on top of the format: what you can put on a contact is what a vCard can carry, so what leaves in a .vcf leaves whole.

Views

The Home tab's Current View offers five, and they are five ways of looking at the same people:

People The default: a list with the selected person read beside it.
Business Card A wall of cards, drawn as the reference draws them.
Card Cards with the fields spelled out rather than laid out.
Phone A table built around the numbers.
List Everything as a table, grouped by company.

Down the side of the list is the alphabet index — press a letter and the list jumps to it, with 123 for everybody who does not file under one. It can be switched off in Options › People (Show an additional index).

The five things people look for

Finding somebody. The search box matches name, company, address and phone as you type. For more than that, Advanced Find takes the same fields as separate boxes.

Writing to them. Select a contact and press E-mail, or start a message and type into To — the Auto-Complete List offers people you have written to before, and the ✕ on a suggestion forgets it. Select Names (the To button on a compose window) opens the address books as a picker, with To, Cc and Bcc under it.

Contact groups. A group is a contact whose members are other contacts. Address it like a person and the message goes to everybody in it.

Linking duplicates. Two cards for one person — one from a CardDAV account, one local — can be linked, and the reading pane then shows them as one person with both sources named.

Categories. The same colour categories as every other module. A category put on a contact here shows on their appointments and their flagged mail, because there is one set of them for the whole application.

Activities

A contact's Activities shows what is connected to them: mail from and to them, and appointments they are on. It reads the stores rather than keeping a copy, so it is right without anything being maintained.

Journal entries are not among them yet: nothing joins a journal entry to a contact, so a contact's Activities cannot find its entries. That is a known gap rather than a design.

Where things are

  • Adding an address book: File › Account Settings — the Add Account wizard's second lane sets up a CardDAV account; Address Books lists what you have.
  • How names file: File › Options › People — the Full Name order and the File As order, which decide the list's order as well as its wording. Duplicate checking on save is there too.
  • Importing: File › Open & Export takes .vcf, one contact or a whole book.
