Looked briefly into Xin Zhao's notebook to rethink my life choices https://github.com/cps-vip/cps-cosimulation-env/wiki/Xin-Zhao-Notebook#power-system

9/4/25

Found interesting link on AES-GCM-256 encryption https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/SpecialPublications/NIST.SP.800-82r3.pdf https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/Legacy/SP/nistspecialpublication800-38d.pdf

Link on how to convert a DNP3 outstation as a TLS server https://www.overleaf.com/9167837843pcxktnzrqdsg#c007bd

10/2

Ran some tests on my own, having difficulties; will ask later on help.

8/29/24

Fresh start. Currently running Kali instead of Windows for the OS. Hopefully will be better, make reinstalling the packages easier. Currently listening to the overview of the course. Grouped back into the Device Modeling Subteam and now am working on general details for the team.

9/5/24

No new notes, just prepped the presentation

9/12/24

Attempted to prep nix again, using the Kali distro of Linux. Currently facing the issue of: image

Solve is found here

Will ask to add me to the nix-users list.

The HELICS and gridlab-d submodules should be updated and cloned.

Brief Update:

The command for adding yourself to nix should be:

sudo usermod -aG nix-users (your user here)

Issues with nix, another permission error, reinstalled it using the

https://nix.dev/manual/nix/2.18/installation/uninstall

Other issue I faced: I ran make all-install after running nix develop and my laptop effectively exploded. You have to open the Makefile in the repository (I ran nano Makefile), and remove the -js and the following command (the thing that starts with $(...)).

9/19/24

Figured how to actually run the example, will list steps in order:

  1. cd cps-cosimulation-env (Get into the actual repository)
  2. nix develop
  3. make all-develop The next steps are for running the example.
  4. cd simple_gridlab_example
  5. sh run_example.sh (sh is to run the shell script, which is what .sh stands for). https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/run-execute-sh-shell-script/

Going to start reading through the following tutorials:

https://www.csimn.com/CSI_pages/Modbus101.html

https://www.dpstele.com/dnp3/index.php

https://pypower.readthedocs.io/en/latest

I ran the Example and after CTRL Z, it doesn't run anymore?

  1. Check the currently running process statuses (ps -ef | grep python)
  2. Kill the parents that are occupying "Transmission_simulator.py" and "Replay_simulator.py" (kill -9 (insert number here)) image image

Looked through some other people's notebooks and found some helpful links. Will review as best as I can. Modbus Master Slave relation protocol

    Use pip install pymodbus

10/3

Looked through the following PDF on substation components.

https://epe.pnnl.gov/pdfs/Distribution_system_infographic.pdf

10/10

Defined the following components:

  1. Circuit breaker are a device created to protect circuits from overcurrent, overload, or short circuits. Their main job is to monitor the current in the circuit and prevent damages. There is a system in place designed to determine if the current exceeds a threshold which could damage the circuit.
  2. Transformers are devices that transfer power between circuits with electromagnetic induction. They're used to change voltage levels without changing the frequency of the currents.
  3. Capacitors are components that stores and release energy in a circuit, like a battery (or a bank).
  4. Voltage Regulators are devices in a circuit which creates a consistent voltage level regardless of any loads and conditions. There are linear voltage regulators or switching voltage regulators which are used for high-power circuits.

10/17

Not too much was done due to exams.

11/7

Fell into a significant funk, but vaguely out of it now. Looked through these articles for a bit more learning to ease back into it.

DNP3

    Mostly in station industries.

Exams again, sadly

Break

1/28:

Created Notebook

1/31:

Attempted to install nix, was unsuccessful. Tutorials online were not very helpful because I did not know which terminal to use or how to access it, and tutorials at that level presume that you are aware of basic elements such as that.

2/1:

Nix installed with the help of some individuals in class, notably I have to use the WSL app rather than command prompt. In addition, steps 5 and 6 are outdated and are not necessary anymore.

2/8:

Have been struggling to get the nix develop command to run, think I may not have enough space on my laptop. Will clear out 40 GB of RAM to try and run it later with the "make all-install" command.

#2/15: Tried to build today, a lot of stuff got spat at me from the terminal, nix develop is still not working for me

Got Sam to try and help me here is a brief overview of what he tried:

  • tried to make new directory to try and run things
  • apparently one of three submodules was misbehaving:
  • we fixed this by updating the other two submodules (not the one misbehaving), this way when running "make all install", we did not run into the misbehaving submodule.

I am for sure able to access nix, you can tell because (cps-cosim-env) appears to the left of the root command.

Now talked to Will since "make all install" failed, apparently not enough swap space. I have a lot of memory remaining (66 GB), but WSL is not using it. Fix this by creating new file called .wslconfig in my user profile (in File Explorer), then edited with a text editor to say [wsl2] swap=32G
