Week 2 (1/19 - 1/25)

  • Joined the cps-vip Github
  • Attended the in-person class and discovered there were only two members in Device Modeling (me and Nicholas)
  • Decided to stay in the Device Modeling subteam and began browsing the GitHub repository

Week 3 (1/26 - 2/1)

  • Held weekly subteam meeting with Nicholas and decided on possible future meeting times
  • Most of the work this week was dedicated to defining tasks for the Kickoff Presentation
  • Downloaded WSL2and Ubuntu so I can access Linux on my Windows laptop
WSL_install_SS

Week 4 (2/2 - 2/8)

  • Weekly subteam meeting to discuss the procedure for merging the branches in this repo
  • Started working on setting up Nix through Ubuntu by following the README
  • Step 1: run $ sh <(curl -s -L https://nixos.org/nix/install) --daemon in the terminal
Screenshot 2026-02-04 191251
  • Step 2: clone this repo by running git clone https://github.com/cps-vip/cps-cosimulation-env.git
Screenshot 2026-02-04 191923
  • Step 3: Then, run sudo nano /etc/nix/nix.conf' to open Nano editing window and then type experimental-features = nix-command flakes`. Ctrl + O to save and then Ctrl + X to exit.

  • Step 4: Run nix develop in the same folder the README.nd and flake.nix files are in

  • Step 5: Run git submodule update --init --recursive to initialize and update the git submodules gridlab-d and HELICS
  • Step 6: Run nix develop and make all-install

Week 5 (2/9 - 2/15)

Followed Install Docker Engine on Ubuntu and How to Install Docker on Ubuntu Linux to download Docker on my virtual Linux machine (Ubuntu)

  • $ sudo apt update
  • $ sudo apt install ca-certificates curl
  • $ ls -la /etc/apt/keyrings/
  • $ sudo install -m 0755 -d /etc/apt/keyrings
  • $ sudo curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg -o /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc
  • $ sudo chmod a+r /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc
  • $ sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.sources <<EOF
  • Types: deb
  • URIs: https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu
  • Suites: $(. /etc/os-release && echo "${UBUNTU_CODENAME:-$VERSION_CODENAME}")
  • Components: stable
  • Signed-By: /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc
  • EOF
  • $ sudo apt install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin
  • $ sudo docker run hello-world

Week 6 (2/16 - 2/22)

Nick helped me set up Git on Ubuntu and add an SSH key

  • sudo apt update
  • sudo apt install git -y
  • git config --global user.name "username"
  • git config --global user.email "email@email.com"
  • ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "email@email.com"
  • eval "$(ssh-agent -s)"
  • ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_ed25519
  • cat ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub
  • ssh -T git@github.com
  • code .

Furthered my interest in the PCB design process that the ROS-HELICS team was doing so I downloaded KiCad. Found this component (Buck Switching Regulator IC Positive Adjustable 0.6V 1 Output 5A) for power management. image

Week 7 (2/23 - 3/1)

  • Mainly worked on finalizing the midterm presentation this week
  • In order to merge the branches, we first went through the commit history in the "piperr" and "Device_modeling_subteam01" branches and found that they split off after October 31, 2025
Screenshot 2026-02-25 110802 Screenshot 2026-02-25 110828 * Because these two are the most similar and relevant branches, we will focus on merging them first

Week 8 (3/2 - 3/8)

  • We found that the "Networking_team" branch split off after January 30, 2025 so merging this branch with the other two will be more challenging.
Screenshot 2026-02-25 111610
  • In order to merge these branches, I began familiarizing myself with Git Push and Pull commands through this tutorial

Week 9 (3/9 - 3/15)

  • Met with Nick and went through the process of creating the new branch (device_modeling_team)
  • Followed these steps to build the Docker image and run the Docker container
image
  • Running ./setup.sh errored
Screenshot 2026-03-11 222816

Week 10 (3/16 - 3/22)

  • Received the Raspberry Pi this week and attempted to complete the network setup
  • A networking bug was discovered in the original Raspberry Pi image
  • Followed Hayden's instructions to reimage the Raspberry Pi by downloading the new image and unzipping the new image file
  • Inserted the Raspberry Pi's microSD card into my computer
  • Downloaded balenaEtcher to write the new image onto the microSD card
  • Attempted the network setup instructions again and ran into this error
Screenshot 2026-04-01 115543

Week 11 (3/23 - 3/29)

  • Spring Break

Week 12 (3/30 - 4/5)

  • Met with Nick and merged the piperr branch into our new device_modeling_team branch
Screenshot 2026-04-01 121618
  • Troubleshooted the Raspberry Pi network issues in class, but still faced the same issues
image image

Week 13 (4/6 - 4/12)

  • Followed the same steps in Week 9, ./setup.sh reached 48% and then started sending fatal error messages
image
  • Followed instructions in the # helpdesk channel in the discord
  • Run using Admin Powershell on Windows

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="ICMP Allow" protocol=icmpv4:8,any dir=in action=allow

Restart-Service SharedAccess

Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters" -Name "IPEnableRouter" -Value 1

  • The first picture shows running the commands without running as Administrator, but the commands work when running as administrator
Screenshot 2026-04-09 154306 Screenshot 2026-04-09 154759

Week 14 (4/13 - 4/19)

  • Focused on getting the Raspberry Pi Network Setup working
  • Sam worked through it and got it to work using some combination of the commands, disabling sharing, unplugging the pi, plugging pi back in, enabling sharing again
Screenshot 2026-04-09 161713 Screenshot 2026-04-09 161750

Week 15 (4/20 - 4-26)

  • Completed and presented Final Presentation
  • Successfully cloned the cps-cosimulation-env repo in to the Raspberry Pi
Screenshot 2026-04-22 172509

Steps to get Network Setup working for Raspberry Pi (For Windows OS)

  • First, follow the network setup instructions and execute the Powershell commands in Administrator Powershell
  • Then, try testing (which probably won't work), then disable sharing for wifi and follow network setup instructions and execute the Powershell commands again
  • Try testing it (which probably won't work again), then turn on sharing for wifi and follow the network setup instructions and execute Powershell commands
  • Try testing it and hopefully it will work now
